A game of 2 halves

A very different course in as much as the front 9 was very flat and quite shabby and didn't really enjoy it. Back 9 was very hilly and more interesting, and in much better condition, especially the greens.

Interesting tree lined course

Played the Longcross on a charity day, followed by dinner.
Enjoyed the course, interesting mix of holes, with some quite tight tree lined tee shots to contend with, and two long challenging par threes.
Only negative was that a few of the greens had patchwork turfs making up some areas on them for some reason, making putting a bit of a lottery?
Excellent practice facilities. Food was good. Lovely setting. Would play again, but pricey.

Killer greens

Surbiton GC was one I have wanted to play for a long time, and I wasn't disappointed. It is a very picturesque course, with a nice variety of holes. The really difficult factor we all seemed to find was the greens. There were a lot of subtle borrows you just couldn't see, and a number of times the ball was diving right or left at the last moment, and often running 3-4 feet passed the holes! Needless to say, 3 putts were quite common in our group.
I was speaking to the new general manager in the bar after the round, and it seems the club had recently invested heavily in new drainage, and other course improvements.
I was lucky enough to get a free round, but scored the value for money as a 4, as the price I would have had to pay was £35.00 for a Sunday afternoon. Which was I think reasonable, given the quality of the course and amenities.
It definitely had a well manicured feel about it, and the new drainage work was evident.
Would definitely play here again, and hopefully improve on the putting scores!

Interesting mix of holes

Really enjoyed this course, as it has a good mix of holes, and you had to plot your way around. Decent practice facilities, and a very nice clubhouse and halfway hut.
It was showing signs of recovery after the recent bout of very hot weather. Greens were a bit tricky to get the pace on though, as they lacked consistency. My only negative comment would be that I went in five bunkers (my fault I know), but three of them barely had sand in, so ended up thinning two bunker shots.
It cost us £40.00 for an afternoon deal, which was OK, but I certainly don't think it's worth anything near the usual £85.00 green fee.
I'd definitely play it again if the £40.00 or less deal became available, but wouldn't be prepared to pay more than that.

Really worth a visit.

Loved this course. Best of the 4 in the area we played. New clubhouse under construction, which looks like it will be really good when finished. Will definitely be going back.

Tale of two halves

The front nine was quite open and a bit featureless. Back nine much maturer and a bit more of a challenge. Course had suffered from recent snow and rain, and was very boggy in places. No temporary greens or tees though, and greens were ok given the conditions. Would play again the summer, as enjoyed the back nine.

OK, but won't linger in the memory

Played here on a corporate day. Found it a bit testing, especially as very windy at times, but apart from the opening hole, their signature par 3, there's not much to stick in the memory banks. Some good views over London, as high and hilly, and a lot of ball under/above the feet lies. Greens were recovering from being treated, but reasonable to putt on, though some tricky reads. Some of the bunkers were a bit shabby, room for improvement there. Fairways and tee boxes in good condition. Clubhouse and changing rooms very dated but clean. We had ploughman's lunch, and an evening meal, and both were good.
Whilst I enjoyed the day as a whole, and would play again if chosen for another company event, it would not be a course I would personally be looking rush back to. Having said that, don't avoid it based on this review, as of course this is just my opinion.

Good day out

Played here on a society day, so very good value for money, with breakfast roll, lunchtime buffet, and evening carvery on top of 27 holes, all for £60.00.
It was a very hot day, with little wind, and the ground was fairly firm, so lots of carry on good fairways. Greens were in excellent condition, and most were very quick, so a few three putts unfortunately.
Interesting mix of holes, nice clubhouse, and new showers/toilets made for a very enjoyable day.
Would definitely play again.

Traditional parkland course

Played here with Paul Smith on the basis of potentially joining. First impressions were good, with a nice clubhouse and changing facilities, and a friendly face in the pro shop. The stand out holes are the 471 par 4, and the 234 par 3 off the whites! So as you can guess, this courses defence is it's length. We played it off the yellows, so not quite so intimidating, and I did manage to par the long par 3, though it was only playing a measly 189 yards. It had been very cold overnight, so many of the tee boxes and greens were partially frozen over. However, from what unfrozen sections we could see, both looked very good, and the fairways were also in good condition for the time of year. They have also recently upgraded a lot of the bunkers, and the couple I went in were well maintained. The remaining ones are due to be upgraded this year. As I have been advised the course drains very well, it seemed friendly when I returned for a second look, and it is very close to where I will be moving, I have bitten the bullet and decided to take advantage of a reduced joining fee deal that was running over December. I don't see my handicap plummeting, due to the length of the course, but I think the general condition will make it a pleasure to play on, and despite some road noise on a few holes, when the trees regain their leaves, it will be a nice course to walk around. It also has that old school traditional feel about it that I really like.

Great views

Really enjoyed playing here, though it was helped by glorious weather, and the fact tees shots were running on well. Greens good, and plenty of sand in bunkers. Only slight negative was the clubhouse was a bit dated and tired, but there was scaffolding around most of it, so maybe it was in the throws of being refurbished? Look forward to playing it again, though some of the blind bends, and narrow lanes to get there are a bit hairy, so beware!

Worth a visit

As other reviews have mentioned, the clubhouse is very nice, and had that oldie worldy members club feel about it. The course was generally in good condition, though a fair amount of GUR around, no doubt following the programme of works being done there. Greens were very good, with quite a few subtle breaks, so not easy. Some of the bunkers could do with a bit more sand, but overall an enjoyable days golf on a decent course. Not too much danger to contend with, but tough playing off the white tees though in fairly windy conditions at times, so only one of our mini society managed to play to their handicap. Definitely play again if the opportunity arises.

Shocking condition

Can't find anything positive to say about the course, the tee boxes were poor, the bunkers either had no sand, or no rakes, or both in most cases, and the greens looks diseased and were a nightmare to put on. The clubhouse is modern, and OK, but not enough to ever entice me back here again.

Better than expected

After reading some other reviews, I was not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. There were a good mix of holes, with a variety of challenges, and the course was holding up very well. Far less muddy than some others played over the past couple of months. Some of the bunkers were a bit stoney, but had enough sand in them. The greens had been recently hollow tined, but were recovering, and in a lot of instances were very quick. A halfway hut, where you could get hot drink and snacks. I would definitely play here again, and useful to have played it once, as a few blind tee shots to catch you out. Friendly pro shop and busy bar, and generally a good day out, apart from some of my golf!

Pros and cons

As a winter course, this really wasn't holding up very well, as it was incredibly muddy and a few of the fairways were waterlogged. Lot of bunkers were GUR, as they should have been, as a lot were being worked on. On a positive note, the greens weren't too bad, and in some cases running quite fast, and I really liked the layout. Would definitely go back in the summer, as a lot of nice holes. The service in the clubhouse was probably the worst I'd experienced though, due mainly to the only guy on the bar being on his first day and totally clueless. Though why that should affect the ridiculously slow kitchen service, doesn't really make sense? Expensive food and drink as well as a Marriot, so be warned! But we only paid £20 for 18 holes, and a very late bacon roll and coffee, so that was a really good deal.

Held up well

Considering the amount of rain we have had of late, this course was holding up well. It rained for about half of our round, but luckily never heavily. The wind blew pretty much throughout though, and is this courses main defence, as was proved by the 200yd par 3, into a 2+ club wind!!!!! Surprisingly enough, none of us made the green. The greens were good for the time of year, and the 2 bunkers I went in had good amounts of sand. Going back for a society game, and glad I played before, as there are a lot of blind shots, as previously mentioned.

Trade off

I can't really score this to improve the rating, as the fairways and tee boxes hadn't really improved since my visit here 4 years previous. But the greens did seem a bit better, and were in most cases quite firm and fast. However, some were still suffering from patches of moss growth.
I think it's really a course in the winter where you would trade off quality, for the chance to get some golf on a course where you'll still get some run, and your ball won't plug on virtually every shot, as has been the case on the last two courses I have played following the recent heavy rains.
No doubt helped by it's higher geographical location, and the chalk base, it was holding up really well, and does have a few really interesting holes, and some great views.
Pity it still hasn't had any investment, and there is only still a portakabin, but the service was friendly, and there was tea/coffee/rolls and a loo available.
We were only charged £20.00, I think I would begrudge paying more, but overall we were able to play a round of golf here, whereas most other local courses were in quite saturated conditions and bordering on being unplayable.
As another of our party has said it will likely be sold off for re-development, I can't see it getting any better, so would probably only go back to take advantage of the drier conditions in similar winter circumstances.

Great if you like hills!

There were some interesting/challengings holes on here, but from a personal point I thought the bunkers were very stoney with minimal sand in, and a lot of the greens quite bobbly. Therefore I think you can get much better value for the £30.00 we paid for an afternoon round. The practice facilities did look good though, but after a nightmare journey on the M25, I never got the chance to use them. I wouldn't avoid it if it comes up on the society I play with again, but not one of my favourites.

Links type feel

The greens here were in very good condition, as was the course in general, with lots of patches of long rough. Though in general, our group found the majority of the balls which didn't find the fairway. Very open to the wind, and had a kind of links feel to it in places. My only negative comment would be, as a four ball who had never played here, the signage to find your next hole was poor or mostly non-existant, to the point we played the wrong hole at one point. Something one of the guys working on the course, told us had frequently happened on that particular hole!

Attractive course

Nice ambience and generally a well tended course with some interesting holes. Only thing that let it down on the day was the greens, especially as there had been competitions in the morning, would have expected better. The putting green was cut short and quite quick, but the actual greens were very wooly and slow, and considering it's a members course, there were a high number of unrepaired pitch marks. Would go back though, in the hope the greens were better next time.

Disappointed

I seem to recall this being a much nicer course when I played it c3 years ago. Due to the amount of water on it, it requires you to be on your game and accurate, so from a challenge point of view it is good, but considering the cost, it was in poor condition. The fairways were too long in lot's of places, reducing run on a good shot, a number of key bunkers were ground under repair and looked terrible, and the greens were wooly. On a positive note, the clubhouse is nice, and the practice facilities are reasonable. Won't be rushing back anytime soon.

Good course, would go back

I thought the front 9 was more challenging than the back 9, and having never played there before a number of doglegs and blind bunkers could easily catch you out. The greens were not in good condition, as they had been recently hollow tined and were a bit sandy in places, there were also a few that had quite unexpected breaks. But luckily enough it was one of those days the the putting gods were one my side and I seemed to hole everything. Would like to play it again when the greens have recovered.

Not for me

Strange layout, with far too many holes where you were crossing roads, cars crossing in front of you, crossing other fairways or people wandering across yours. Also a few potentially dangerous tee boxes very close to greens. Just felt like they had tried to cram a golf course in too little space with 3 par 3 in a row on the back nine. Nice clubhouse with a terrace for drinks, but I won't be going back.

A course I have been wanting to play for a while, but a little pricey for my usual weekend game. Managed to get the chance via company day out and glad I went, despite the erratic weather! Picturesque

A very pretty course primarily well maintained and a good vatiety of interesting holes. The greens were some of the best I have played on, quite fast and true. My only critisicm would be that a nuber of the bunkers have very little sand in them and were therefore quite hard. Definitley be going back though, but need to be driving well here, as a good nuber of hazards to catch out a poor drive.

What can I say, it's Wentworth!

Played the East course on what, unfortunately, was a rather wet and blustery day. Not the best conditions to enjoy such a gem of a course with many elevated tees with great views and some long testing par threes. A few shorter par fours to give you good chances for par and possibly birdie. Greens were true and still quite pacey considering all the rain. Would love to go back and play again in better weather, as really could not appreciate the course to the full through rain speckled glasses. Ambience and history of the clubhouse speaks for itself. Thanks again to Anna Guss for the opportunity to play a premier course for a fraction of the normal green fee.

One to go back to

Paid £25.00 with 241s. Well maintained course with first 5 holes testing your stamina as lot of up's and down's including heart attack hill! Course flattens out then until towards the end. Good test with a mix of holes. My only criticism would be the par 4s are either a bit short, or way too long unless you are a big hitter. So you really have to use your additional shots, which I guess is the whole point of the handicap system. Will be going back again. p.s. only wear white socks if you wear shorts as one of my playing partners had to buy some. Rules are rules I suppose.

Tight parkland course

Played an off peak weekday round for £25.00 after 14:00. Lot of quite tight tree lined holes, though ball was relatively findable if you strayed into them. Not a course to belt the driver on a lot of holes, though for accurate big hitters a few blind driveable greens off the yellow tees. Worth a visit.

Interesting course, though a lot better in the Summer

Having played here in the Summer some years ago I was keen to go back. Lot of new buildings sprung up since I last went, but course is still interesting. Though a lot of the fairways were quite boggy in places, hence it was playing long and there were no high scores in our group of eight. Also majority of the tee boxes were not marked, so slightly confusing as to whether playing the right hole sometimes? However, overall an enjoyable day and for what we paid it was good value and some very nice holes. Well worth a visit if you can get a deal.

Would not rush back

On the positive side the greens were excellent but fast and testing. Putting green was equally good, though did not use the range. Some very challenging holes, especially to start. On the negative, apart from the greens the course was quite shabby, long wooly approaches to lot of greens penalising a good shot, lot of very tatty bunkers, broken/poor directional signage and a couple of quite odd par fives. Played a number of better courses for the same money we paid, so would not rush back.

In need of a lot more investment

Positive points, good mix of holes, some quite challenging, bunkers had good amount of sand in them. Potential to be quite good. Negative points, no club house, no practice facilities. Over priced for the shabby state of the tee boxes, fairways and wooley greens, considering the choice of other local courses for the same or one or two pounds more. Would not go back unless hear on the grapevine it has greatly improved with additional investment.

Good value deal

Could not complain at the deal we got, the roast pork lunch was very good, pity the same could not be said about the course though. Greens were very patchy and a lot were very soft and spongey from retaining the recent rain. Very worn out tee boxes and off some mats. On the plus side the bunkers looked like they had decent sand (only went in one) and fairways were OK. Short course better suited to beginners.

Some of the greens had been scarified and nobody told us. The first was in a shocking state. The course was very waterlogged on a lot of holes, despite there not having been much rain? Had heard they had made some drainage improvements here, but no evidence of that, yet they had increased the price. Won't be going back, which is a shame, as there are some interesting holes on here, especially like the par fives and strategically placed water on a number of holes makes for a good challenge.

Mostly straightforward and lot of side to side fairways, so not very punishing if your wide. 10th is only real one that stands out.
