much improved greens

Haven't played here in a few years,,, the fairways and tee boxes still a little below expectations at £25 for the round. But the greens so much improved, for a change you could hold the greens with approach play and ran quite nicely. Didn't use the practice areas at all so cannot comment on these, and didn't use the clubhouse other than paying, but it looks as it did previously which is quite nice with a decent outside seating area.
Fairways very tufty and at times little grass visible, causing a few issues with seconds shots being easier from the first cut of rough than the fairways

won't be rushing back

On arrival first impressions, nice place friendly counter staff
the course however, grass on fairway often long for a fairway, tight course (too tight) as once off of the fairway by a few feet could be a lost ball, as the first cut is just Cabbage 8 inches high. Could be a course worth playing if looked after better and the rough near the fairways shortened dramatically.
Another downer was the information around the course, as it winds both sides of the road. We actually got lost, having to ask others where the next tee would be! Greens varied pace, some v slow others a lot faster causing many putting issues for all
Won't be rushing back any time soon, as we paid a price that would be for a decent course and we got a poor 1

Lovely testing course

I have played here just the once, but I'll certainly go back again. has a variety of holes, some quite short others not! The short holes really are risk and reward status, The greens were in excellent condition and are very fast indeed, so best get your speed right when putting.
Difficult to overpower this course as it's layout is very good and makes you play a variety of shots to get round. seemed a well stocked pro shop, and a beautiful clubhouse.
Definitely a course to go back to again.
p.s. make sure you check the club dress code if wearing shorts,,, must be white socks

Superb, a must play course

If you get the chance PLAY HERE
County card holders £25 each, summer offer £120 for a 4 ball, and it is worth every penny of that
I haven't played the posh places like Woborn etc at the costs of £100 plus, but this is a gem
I was lucky enough to be invited to play here. best greens and well everything about the course I've played.
Even got to see an eagle flying about on the front 9
Braintree is a wonderful course and I'll be back there too for the same reasons, well almost as East herts tops the lot

nice little course, but I think the SSS is flattering

Nice little clubhouse, very welcoming staff from pro shop to the bar staff
used the practice green, and assumed it couldn't be the same as the course, but it was. And that was v slow and still recovering from being worked on. some drive-able par 4's, but some well placed bunkers protecting the fairways off of the tees. Some good elevation changes too, with some decent scenery to enjoy
Second time here, and despite the greens, would always enjoy walking around in good company as I did again on this visit.

Thanks for suffering me out there lady and gents at this very strained time

Under repair but a beautiful course, will be back again

2 holes with temp tees and greens, so obviously, not as enjoyable as it would undoubtedly have been had the work been completed. Re the repairs, the work is being carried out to an excellent level. The course was tranquil on a Monday afternoon, so with good company, it was a pleasant stroll around a seriously well designed course. I played off of the yellow tees, and good shots from the tee and fairway were rewarded, but bad shots will most definitely be punished, so great risk/reward shots available.
I didn't use the practice facilities, or the clubhouse, (as i did not bring the correct attire, my fault of course), but i cannot comment on what i haven't seen. But the staff in the pro shop were extremely pleasant and helpful, and I am sure the clubhouse will be as well designed as the course that it looks over so impressively.
the average marks were purely down to the works being done, so not a true reflection on what is undoubtedly a course you should play. I am definitely going back

good course layout to enjoy, worth playing

This is a lovely course set in very nice surroundings.
got a 1 for clubhouse/hospitality, because there is no clubhouse, but pro shop staff friendly.
got a 3 for quality of course as the recent v dry hot weather has burnt the course and the greens a little too firm.
got a 1 for practice facilities, as there is a v small putting green which is heavily sloped and doesn't help you for your round v much, and the driving range is all down hill and not nice to look at.
Worst moment on the course, was hitting a 280+ yard drive drawing it off of the bunker in the middle of the fairway, only for my playing partner to hit 30 yards passed me less than a minute later, there is nothing fair about golf is there. Great Drive Robin
The course itself is pretty good if you do not mind courses that have much sloping, there are some excellently placed bunkers protecting this short course.
The greens were a tad hard, so some work on the greens to make them a little more ball friendly wouldn't go amiss.

With money spent on it, I think this could be developed into a wonderful golf course, especially if the owners incorporate the hotel with the course and update/improve the points made above.

play this course when it hasn't been burnt by the summer sunshine, and you will enjoy it very much as it will test you at times despite being a short course. But use a powered trolley it is very hilly

will be back again for sure - lovely course

This course is £35 midweek for a round, but we got on cheaper for £15. This course was in lovely condition, (and I really do mean lovely), lush green receptive greens that were nice n fast but not electric fast. A must play course for sure. The staff were extremely friendly, not only this, but we met many members pre post and during our round, and they were all very accommodating and friendly. Cannot praise them enough, the practice area for putting and chipping,,, superb.

I will be back again, as soon as i can

Very good indeed for £10 on a Saturday

Nice little course this, very tight in places, and lots of trees for the off-straight golfer. Only real criticism of the course was that the greens were often not very receptive, (but we did play after continuous hot days which baked them a bit I guess), but they ran at a good speed and the putts rolled very true on most greens, if not all of them.
Didn't use practice areas but they were there, and the few putts I had on the practice greens showed them to be similar pacced to the course greens which was nice.
Play here and enjoy it, assuming you can find it. USE YOUR SAT NAV and you'll be fine

Definitely worth playing here

Not a massively long golf course, but many trees to find on your way round if you don't keep on the fairways. The staff were nice enough too, I even ordered food on route to have it waiting for me at the bar when we arrived as we were running a bit late.
Didn't see the practice areas as I said we were running late. Greens were nice, they held an approach shot, but ran quite quickly too, and the putts ran true on nice surfaces. The bar area and outside areas after your round are very good indeed. Play this course if you can get a good price as we did, because I wouldn't pay £50 to play there, but we paid about £20 and for that money it was awesome.

Some verynice holes on this course, height changes, dog legs some sweeping fairways, and greens you have to read well, and are a good speed even when wet as our day there.
Friendly staff throughout from pro shop to bar and ground staff. Lack of a short game that works regularly meant on 33 points, but not the courses fault.
I am definitely going back again

A short but very testing little course

This is an interesting course, I just stopped off in Rugby with my clubs on the way to Birmingham, and so glad that I did. I got on for £20 on a Saturday afternoon
Lush green course sweeping sloping fairways, lots of holes with significant elevation changes, and will challenge your club selections. If you hit driver on every par 4, there are enough trees to make you wish you'd taken a lesser club.
Greens were superb and pretty quick too, and most bunkers were well sanded, but a couple need attending
Clubhouse isn't big, but well maintained and very friendly staff. They make a great cup of tea too.
If ever back up there, I am going there again,, no ifs or buts

Lovely golf course will most definitely play here again if I can

High handicappers watch out, if you go round pulling driver at every chance, this course will bite you on the rear quite hard. Medium handicappers, the same applies :)
Lovely course some holes on the flat, some very sloped , and a test of golf. Go round with someone who has played the course a few times, and take their advice.
We paid £20 for the round and well worth the money, the fairways were lovely, the greens are difficult to read, but roll very pure and at a decent pace.
The staff were extremely nice and friendly. And the breakfast even though £7 was well cooked and they even swapped the beans for another sausage :)
Service was excellent before and after the round.
P.S. I'm a mid handicapper, and I didn't listen to most of the advice,,, the course bit me, chewed me up a bit, then spat me out. Next time a little course knowledge from this time, will do wonders for my scoring

V nice course, well worth the trip

I traveled 65 miles to play here and I am pleased to say I am glad I did. Great company and a very nice looking course. It does bite if you are off line, and a few par fours that need a damn good whack off of the tee, followed by another one to even get close in winter. Greens were rather bobbly, but considering the weather lately, they had held a decent pace on them. Friendly staff in the bar and pro shop, and even a very pleasant Starter. but I always moan when I get charged £2 for a cup of tea, it's a tea bag and water!!!
I didn't use any practice facilities, so I gave it a 3.
The course itself is very nice with many good views, I am sure in a few months it will look stunning. Undulating fairways, elevation changes on approach shots, great challenge.
It was £31 guest rate at the weekend, which a bit more than I want to pay for golf, but well worth it. Give it a go

So my only complaint is the price of the tea, have a round at this place you'll love it

worth a day out this one

We paid only £20 to play here today, It is a short course but tree lined, so keep it straight or pay the price. Some variations in elevation here, so club selection has to right on some of the par 3's especially. These are the best greens I have played on this winter. despite the heavy frost in Essex that morning, the greens were receptive, and not only that, but they tracked well and played at a decent speed too.
The club house is lovely, the staff inside and out are very pleasant and helpful. Even when passing the starters hut, we were asked if we'd played here before, and as none of us had, we were given good information about the course.
The down side for me, was the price of food and drinks. £390 for an egg in a bap! and £2.30 for a small pot of tea (1 1/2 cups). So don't buy the food, but do enjoy the course.

No practice facilities, limited food n drink.
but saying that, a lovely course, with friendly staff.
the course is very flat, and high handicappers will find there balls off line, unless you find 1 of the well placed bits of water.
Worth playing, as you can score well if you play well. But if you look at my last score there, it bites too
The greens are always in superb condition, and the course is very well maintained by the friendly staff
Enjoy

definitely worth playing

We got a discounted tee time and only paid £22 for golf with ham egg n chips after. Worth every penny obviously, but not sure about the price with normal prices.

Practice facilities looked rather unwelcoming, and the practice green was all on a fair slope, so couldn't get a feel for the weight of putt needed on the flat.

Been much rain in the days before our game, and the course held up very well.No puddles except the ponds.
There are tree lined tee shots, and tee shots with almost hidden ponds to find. A very fair track which bites the really poor shots, forgives some not quite good shots, and rewards for the good shots. Isn't that what golf is meant to be?

All in all, a great day out and only just off of J4 M25, so it is easy to find too.
Play it you'll love it

Good solid course

South Essex Golf Club is 6500+ yards on the main course from the yellow tees, so it's never a gimme 45 Stableford points, scoring above handicap is playing good golf.

I've played the course so many times, I prefer other courses purely on that basis. It is forgiving on some holes, and bites you, chews you up, and spits you out on others.

Very few water hazards on the course, and no ponds in front of greens, but there are a few bits to be wary of.

Enjoy.

worth a game here for sure

Tough course if you stray too far from the fairway, but hit the fairways in summer and you'll find long drives and greens that are watered well, so that they still allow you to hit the greens and hold the greens!
Clubhouse is nice, staff v friendly
The practice putting green is a bit of a farce, as it is quite a steep slope, unlike the course greens
played in a 4 ball in lovely sunshine and not much of a breeze.
give it a go, and you'll probably love it

beautiful course, want to play again already

Yes I want to play this course again, but sadly not until the next winter offers as they want £50 for a round midweek!
It's a lovely course, but not £50 worth. There is very nice scenes almost everywhere you look, and this despite being well inside the M25. The owners/workers responsible deserve a lot of credit. The tee boxes are almost all perfectly flat, and again I say pretty much every tee box it's a lovely view.
There are always buts, and there are 2 that I can think of.
Firstly the majority of holes you are on some kind of slope, making good ball striking more difficult. My concern is that perhaps too many times, which may reduce the enjoyment of the round a little.
Secondly, I do love quick greens, and the downhill putts were almost scary fast. The trouble is, that I was told the greens were running rather slow compared to the summer months. So I would suggest that the greens are ever so slightly too sloped. If the greens were 'slow' the day I played, the only way to stop a downhill putt, will be if you hit the hole. If you miss, as many greens are raised as well as fast, you'll be chipping for your next shot.
I only put down a 3 for practice facilities, purely because I arrived late and haven't looked at them. But reliably informed that they are very good indeed.

If you get the chance as I did, to play this course for £20 and you don't, you missed out and you should regret it

nice course, will play again

pleasant helpful staff, and a very nice layout of the course.
Unfortunately the green keeper vanished early and didn't cut the greens, so they were a tad woolly making putting rather tricky, and the fairways looked as though they hadn't been cut either. But the course is a good one, some holes are rather generous off of the tee, others not so much.
When I play here again, I will be looking forward to it.

well worth playing this course

not the easiest of courses for me to find, but once there it was worth it.
Nice clubhouse, nice bar overlooking the 18th (which is always a plus to my way of thinking) and food not overly expensive either.
didn't use any practice facilities so it gets a 3.
The course played very well indeed, it's on a chalk base, so despite the amount of waterlogged courses due to recent weather, the course played very well.
The greens were a bit fluffy in places, and most moaned about them on the day, but a good solid golf course, gives you opportunities if you hit good shots, and will bite you for a v poor one. This makes it very enjoyable to play.
Play here and you will not regret the green fee

lovely golf course, some very nice views.
Unfortunately, I played it when very wet, but despite this, it played well, all be it with rather bobbly greens.
Clubhouse is nice, with friendly and helpful staff, food is a bit more expensive than you'd want.
The golf course is lined by cart paths, so they are used all year round, but they stay on the paths, so a few long walks to your golf ball. The golf cart was free with the round of golf, and it was 1 each if you wished. I chose to walk the course and it was an enjoyable walk.

Nice course, friendly staff and good company made for a good day on the course.
Hard to judge the course properly as it went from frozen greens to soft greens and back to frozen on the last 2 holes. I would like to play here again, esp in summer just to see it at it's best.
But it had drained very well considering all the inclement weather we had suffered the previous week.

quite a tough test of your golf, I will be back for more

Very helpful pleasant staff on arrival, but were delayed by having to fill in guest forms and people in front of us and we were 3-4 minutes late for our tee time, which was brought to our attention by the starter who wasn't happy about it.
They are sticklers for dress code, so be advised as the starter will notice!
The course is tight in many places so tee shots need to be in play, green were very receptive but heavy rain the day before so could be harder in summer months, but they had drained well and were cut beautifully and were quite quick and rather tricky, as the breaks sometimes just weren't there
The fairways often had too much grass growth on them.
The 15th and 17th seemed rather unfair to be honest, the 15th only being stroke index 15 when it was rather difficult off the tee to give you a second shot, (which a very tight second and requiring a bit of distance).
The 17th if you go down the right, you are blocked out by a very large tree for your approach. And if you are not long with a draw to get passed a very large tree on the left to approach from the left. The tree on the left blocks the approach from the left hand side. A bit of trimming is required me thinks.

The clubhouse is very nice, and the decked area outside overlooking the lake is just what you need after a round of golf
If you can't keep many of your tee shots straight, this course will bite you big time. ENJOY IT,,, I DID

Assuming they don't double book you as they did with us
Big long driveway, amazing building as you approach, well stocked pro shop, plenty of practice facilities.
The course is a challenge with many different types of holes to contend with. Some large hills hitting up and down them, including par 3's, and some of the short par 5's, on in 2 has some serious risks involved.
So the course will bite you if you get it wrong, but keep it on or near the fairway and you can score well here too. The bar and club house are outstanding

Tough course undergoing redevelopment

Basildon Golf course is a tough little course, but for many many years lacking in money spent on it as a pay n play but someone took it over at the end of last year and they are spending money and making repairs.

Don't get me wrong, there is some way to go still I think, but out on the course today, you could see many workers cutting fairways and fixing the golf course.

The clubhouse and practice facilities are v limited, but they are building and extension at the moment so will be far better when completed. This also affects the practice green at the moment too. So fair play to them, and see what's like next year.

Now to the course itself ....

It's quite a tight course in places, so fairway tee shots are vital if you are going to score well.
There are many undulating and sloped fairways, which you will need some course management, (refusing driver), to stay in with a chance of par. Biggest problem is weekends and school holidays, as kids can and do get onto the course and can be a royal pain.

But it's a good layout of course and bites you hard at times, but good play can give quite a few birdie opportunities. I'll be back again next spring if not before

Very hilly but decent course

firstly the clubhouse, friendly staff, just don't eat there. Cost me £9.50 for 2 sausage Baguettes, and they were not big. Clubhouse is quite nice, with a ground and high seating area looking over the 18th green.
The course was definitely only walkable if you have some stamina, very hilly with some steep climbs, and going down some of the hills with an electric trolley felt a bit dicey, (wouldn't want to go down them with some ise around). But a fair course, play well you will score, get it wrong and some places will bite you hard. Saying that, there are some very wide fairways too. The greens were rather quick when we started, and got quicker as the sun dried them out some more, it made being near the hole to be rather important from the fairway, they didn't bobble about, but there will be a few 3 putts if not very careful.
A nice course, but as it is ridiculously hilly, I probably won't rush back to play there, but won't complain if there is a good deal going with the Bandits or the SES

Course was quite well laid out, but many v straight holes, so keep it fairly straight, and you can score very well here, if you don't keep it straight, there are quite a few trees that will accommodate your ball.
Greens were ok, not too many bobbles despite the hollotining , slower than many we are playing this summer, but a reasonable speed

Definitely worth playing this course

Very nice clubhouse, friendly staff and a proper tea with top up water was only £1.50. Lots of trees to mess you up if you stray too far off line, and some tee shots are very daunting, (a few would like to see some tees just cut back a little for the tee shots).

We played after rain, but the greens held very well but were around 11 or so on the ol' stimp-meter I reckon, with some very deceptive breaks on them in places, but the ball rolled very true on them.

If you haven't played here before and want to play midweek for £20, test yourself at Muswell Hill. I'm definitely going back to play there again.

£13 what a price for this course

Yes £13 for a very nice course that will bite you if you get it wrong, some very tough holes, but some birdie chances out there too as it isn't a very long course.
Clubhouse is very nice and the course is well worth playing.
Didn't use any practice facilities, so cannot comment on them.
Breakfast was £7 though, and you didn't get tea with that, so eat before you leave. 2 bottles of coke and a kitkat £4.80, so fill your bottles before you leave home guys and girls.

Lovely if short golf course, VERY worth playing

We turned up on a sunny Day in May, after a few days of rain. This meant the course was in as close to perfect condition as possible, the greens were holding very well due to the rain I assume. Most of the greens were in very good condition and played at a decent speed, (some seemed a little slower than others though).
It's a fairly short course, so a lot of approach shots with wedges to 8 iron, but quite a few places that will bite you if you stray off line.
The worst bit about this course is the state of parts of the driveway into the club. The clubhouse and staff were as good as you could ask for, although the food is very expensive, £4.25 for a small sausage baguette and £7.50 for a breakfast. I didn't use any practice facilities, so put a 3 for neutral.
YOU WILL NOT REGRET PLAYING THIS COURSE

recent weather damaged

I didn't see the course anywhere near it's best, the recent bad weather has caused the course to be a bit under par, but some very nice holes and some with rather tight tee shots. Greens let this course down though, covered in moss. V nice clubhouse, and friendly staff. practice putting green wasn't like the course other than the amount of moss. I didnt look for anything else so no idea on other practice areas

we paid £15 and well worth the money

Not a long course but lots of trees and some deep bunkers to contend with.
Didn't go in the club house as the green fee was already paid, practice areas were a tad frozen, so didn't use them either. Nice course to play, nice scenery too. Greens were rather frozen which messed up the putting a bit. So if Ed Mc has a game up to play there for £15 I'd play again, in fact I am next week and looking forward to it

Play it when you can afford it

You cannot argue with the course, the views and the difficulties faced out there. Add a blustery wind and it can be rather difficult off the tees, the up hill putts were quite slow indeed, but it is December and whilst in good condition, very difficult to read for me anyway. Didn't use the practice facilities, but looked very good.
We paid quite a lot compared to other courses, so the visit was only slightly marred by the guy looking after us, when he wanted me to wait if I wanted tea, despite coffee being on the tables, I thought that was a tad petty. It has lots of sand and trees to bite you with, and a lot of those fairway bunkers are severe. I will be back next year as a 1 off, but over 30 quid on a Monday is a bit steep when we can get a good course and better hospitality for less and nearer. BUT YOU JUST HAVE TO PLAY THIS COURSE AT LEAST ONCE

what a great day for 20 quid

where does one start, the club house is very nice indeed, the staff were very friendly and accommodating, and on the course some absolutely stunning views to be seen. Despite the weather, the course was in pretty good shape, (I think I gave it 4 because of the weather), It gives you a few chances to score here, and by gum you best take them because it will bite you at some point, and that is before you get to the greens!
The greens were superb for the time of year, after playing other courses in the weeks before with slow greens, what a shock to the system to play on greens that would have been considered pretty fast on any course. You need to learn the Fred Couples one inch putt technique on some of the down hill putts, ( 15 feet down hill is too close for a 3 inch putt), and chipping downhill is just frightening how soft you have to land the ball. I kid you not, 4-40 feet down hill putt could be 3 putt territory, you have been warned, approach below the hole!
We paid £20 and we got a golf course like that, (and the course was more than worth £20, we also got a full English breakfast and ham egg and chips lunch. All of this was waitress served, and with breakfast, no queueing to a machine for water or metal tea pots, no scrimping, pots of tea and coffee on the table a plenty
Any society that doesn't use this course in the winter with this deal is bonkers.
Lastly, and i know I have written a lot here, I marked the practice facilities as a 3, this is purely because I didn't use any of it and didn't look for it. I would be surprised as everything else was of a high standard, if it wasn't a 4 or a 5. I put down a 5 ball rating for value for money, but I think it was a 6 today.
If you think I have said too much or exaggerating, go and play the course on a sunny winters morning. You will agree with everything I have said

wet but a lovely course

I haven't marked the course as well as I could have, but this was a member of staff was quite stroppy with us re the teas etc, and I didn't go anywhere near any of the practice areas so I cannot comment on them. Despite being very wet, and parts of the fairways roped off to stop trolleys, I thought the course played rather well. Scenery was good, and I thought quite a well laid out course. After the previous 3 weeks playing on v slow greens, playing on good greens with a reasonable pace caused some putting problems. Hit the ball straight and you can score well here, but go off line and it will chew you up and spit you out

Tough course this one - more so in the cold and rain

I have given the club a low rating, but mainly because of when we played.
It was wet cold and a bit breezy, and the leaves were dropping heavily, balls were lost because they were under a leaf and no one knew which one. There was one temporary green, which I think they should have mentioned before we paid to play.
Having said all of that, it was easy to see how good the course would look and play in the spring/summer months.
There are some holes where your only option is to be very long off of the tee on a dogleg par 4 needed approx 240 yards off the tee to have a view of the green for your second. South Essex may be longer on the score card, but this course keeps you hitting long and straight or else.
The weather kept changing the speed of the greens which caused a few longer second putts than we'd have liked.
we paid £25 with a full English breakfast and it was lovely with toast jam and tea/coffee thrown in, well cooked and very welcoming pleasant staff. Clubhouse was a nice place to site and eat.
Summary is that without all the wet leaves on the ground, and a bit better weather over the previous week or so. it would have been great value. Do not expect to improve your handicap on this course

hainault lower course

Club house is a decent 19th hole, and I always find the bar area staff very pleasant.
The lower course has a few holes that will bite you, 1 hole is claimed to be 10th best hole is essex!, not in my book, but we all have our preferences.
It's a decent course I guess, but the bunkers are absolutely awful, you don't need to rake them, they need a Rotavator through them first they are so compacted, making a mockery of trying to play out of them. Turning some interesting holes into a bit of a joke when you hit the protection for a green.

so so for £27 I guess

Course most definitely has some challenges on it, but we played with many temp tees which some were awful, but I thought the course was quite well sculptured, and some tricky placements needed on some of the tees. The practice green was slower than the course which is never good, didn't have time to check out if they had a range or not. You need to get inside that 10 foot circle on most greens to have a chance of birdie, as the greens have much to read and a good contest to the putter. Clubhouse was ok, if you didn't mind the floor bowing up in places, but after the round, I found the bar lady wasn't very interested in serving us the way you'd expect. We have played better for less on a saturday, but probably played worse for the same cost or more. If weekday is a good price, it is well worth playing.

best greens of 2013

we spoke to a groundsman half way round and he explained some new equipment they'd bought for the greens, ad I have to say it has done what they asked for, The best greens we have see all 2013, quite quick must have been around 10 or so on the ol stimp, with no noticeable change of pace on any green, ad a well hit approach shot got bite ad held the green despite all the dry weather. The only thing letting down the course was the bunkers, which varied quite a bit (and I hit a few !). The club house is quite nice, but a little cramped, especially outside, but a v nice friendly place to go and play golf. Practice facilities not great, and can be a little difficult to find the club if you take a wrong turn, (and yes I know all about making a wrong turn getting there). I definitely recommend this as a venue despite being 50 miles to get there

a very nice, if sometimes v tough course

I only scored 31 points on my first visit, but this was down to my mistakes.
The course had been burnt by the heatwave, and then rained on heavily the day before we played, the course had drained very well indeed, far better than expected, just some of the burnt areas and gone a little mushy, but not overly so. I will not criticize the greens for being a little slow, as they had been working on them a few days before we played.
I will not lie, there are some rather tough holes on this course, and if you don't take care this course will not only chew you up and spit you out, it will stamp on you afterwards, with a few rather tough tee shots... High handicappers, I tell you now, on some tees accept your handicap and play safe or ELSE.
Now for the important bits, it is a really nice walk this course, with some nice scenery, and the course is cut through trees and more trees. The greens, (ignoring the works being carried out), have some tricky breaks and slopes on them, so accept the odd 3 putt from a misread line. practice facilities are ok, and even nice views from the practice areas.
I havent looked what the regular prices are, but we paid £20 and I assure you it is a course that was well worth the money. I would most definately play this course again, despite the drive of over 40 miles. I gave it only 4/5 for value, but only due to the weather damage. This is a good ol tough course that you need to play well and hit long off of the tee where possible to score well. I nearly forgot, I reached the 600 yard par 5 in 3 blows of the golf sticks YESSSS, driver, 3 wood 21 degree rescue to a yard onto the front yehaw!

Shendish,, watchout for them there greens !

pleasant little course, if you start well, you need to score early as the course gets harder.
Then grees! ,, if you get the wrong side of the hole on may greens, (and this means as close as directly below the hole), the unseen breaks will make you look daft, by feet not iches

cheap as chips

costs 12.50 to play Dunton Hills without any discounts which is definitely a cheap round of golf.
The greens are a bit woolly at times, so not sure if the ball will stop on the green or bounce off and variable paced, quite a hilly course, but you do get a few nice views at the tops of some of them. Staff have always appeared very friendly and polite to me and my son. It is just a shame that the course isn't cared for a little better, but it is about 2 miles from S Essex who charge twice the price, and not anywhere near as busy.
The course has a many bay range, putting green etc
It isn't a course I would want to play every week, but if you fancy a round and want it cheap, Dunto will allow this, and has a lovely outside and inside area for the 19th hole

epping !

People who know me, know that I don't like this course and play it because the society does.
Having said that, the course played quite well, (I still don't like quite a few holes), but the greens were receptive, and played at a decent speed, so cannot fault this.
The staff are friendly and helpful, esp when you have an autistic son with you, but they were fine. There is a bit of a field to hit balls into etc, and if you don't hit the ball far, a pleasant walk and whacking of golf balls. I doubt I will ever like the course, but others do so maybe it is just me. But it has held up well this summer

nice course played on a nice day

had a lovely day out on this course, scored 32 points, should have been better but we all say that. still a little woolly after the long winter but in the sunshine was a pleasure to play.
That said if I am being picky, I'd say that there are at least 2 holes where water was only in play for the average golfer, where the better golfer and by that longer hitting, the hazards would not feature in shot selection. I was told after the game, that some bunkers were rather lacking in sand, (didn't hit one all day so I don't know how true that is.
We got on the course as a society for a much reduced green fee of about £25. not sure I'd want to pay the full midweek price for this course however, but a solid course none the less. Some tight tee shots and some very open ones. If you play well you can definitely score on this course, and by comparison if you play army golf here, it will chew you up and spit you out.
Enjoy

Ok I'll start by saying I haven't made 36 points round here before so it does challenge you. due to the weather some of the tee positions are a bit off, but despite the weather the course was in decent condition. Greens a bit 2 or 3 paced, but again blame the weather

certainly worth the price of admission

especially when it comes with a free fry up for £16, it has been very wet lately as we all know so the greens were a bit ropey, (and i'm sticking to that one with the way I chipped and putted on them ! ), On a nice sunny day there is much to enjoy at Top Meadow for the price. I have always found the staff very friendly and accommodating, esp with regard to my son who has severe autism. So come and enjoy

satisfactory course

Once you accept that just a few miles down the road the day before flooded my garden and was still flooded the morning of the game, I reckon the course held up very well indeed. Yes the greens were dreadfully slow for the front nine, but no temp greens and not much standing water on the course. Rest assured my low Stableford points was not due to the course, it was due to some poor golf on my part.
I didn't have time to see if there were any practice facilities

In the clubhouse the woman who served my was nice and the food was not expensive. I would definitely go back again. Beats some other clubs we have been to on the tsg that's for sure.

Hartswood is a good test

Lets start with the down side to hartswood, the bunkers need sand in them, and there isn't much in thw way of practice facilities, (if wrong I apologise to the course management, but I didn't see it). For my taste the greens were a little slow, but that's my problem not the courses
On the course is was very pleasant, you could be in the middle of the countryside, tree lined course with some tough tee shots.
Seriously people, I know the company on the course always makes a difference to how you enjoy the golf, (and I had good company in Jack and Ian), and as Ian Mullins proved, play well and you can score well. And of course if you played a number of poor shots, the course will bite you. I would most definately play here again, just avoid the bunkers, there is no sand.

1st time at Blakes

we had to pay £12 to play this course, and well worth the money in my opnion. I play off of 11.5 and on this course that is an advantage of the 18 handicap player on this course, lots of slopey fairways. The greens are very fast indeed, they were at their worst today, full of holes and sandy as most courses are doing about the same sort of time. that being said, in my 3 ball not one of complained of a bad roll in that condition for the entired round, they run very true, and did I mention VERY fast. but it is almost impossible to hold a ball on the green, the ball just wont bite on the surface, the sand maybe? no idea but they bounded on.
The fairways the grass is uneven, and a couple more blind tee shots than I would prefer, (buy the course book is a good tip I didn't and it cost me a couple). The shape and layout I think is good and is a challenge with some opportunities to birdie out there too. but it does need more work on the fairways and cleaning up the surrunding off fairway bits, but a good challenging course. I bet it's a real git when the wind gets up though :o) but for 12 quid, worth a bash indeed. Did I mention how FAST the greens are?

Addington,, I'd play there again

Played addington today, If you putt well and can read the breaks on these greens, you will score low in my opinion. It's not a long course by any means, but the greens are a decent speed but flat they are not. They roll very nicely indeed. If the greens at Stapleford Abbotts played this well at the moment, I would be a very happy man indeed. Staff were very friendly and I had good company on the course. One word of warning sort of, If you tire pulling a trolley up a hill, make sure you bring a battery assisted trolley, trust me! I forgot to charge the battery to my cost on one hole especially. The course is tree lined alot, but the areas are reasonably wide, cut a few corners and get it wrong, and the course will bite you. A 7 on the par 4 stroke index 1 proved that to me. I doubt I would want to join the club and play it all the time, but i will definately be back again.

Played it once, loved it

Seriously guys, If you want to get challenged off of yellow tees, this course will do it. There is one green being played with a temporary green, but the other greens are as good as you'll find. And man are they nice and quick. keep it straight and you can score ok, dont hit near the fairways and it'll bite ya where you dont want it to. Clubhouse was nice, good service and food was adequate. I reckon I'll be playing there again next month. Lok on my friends list for Stephen slater if you want to join his little society playing there. we get a good rate too with Stephen. Enjoy

The Priors course at Stapleford Abbotts

Its a nice short ish course, no long par 5's and just a couple of longish par 4's. A fair amount of water hazzards. If you play poorly, the course will bite a bit, but if you stay anywhere near the fairways, you will still have a second shot to the green.
