What a sodden afternoon....

Played the Edinburgh Course, on a wet, very wet, afternoon, but this was no damp squib, quite the opposite. I am fortunate to have now played almost half of the Top100 courses in England and this is definitely one of my favourites - a majestic parkland layout, in my view better than "the West" and on the same level as Woburn (Dukes) and Sunningdale (New). All the holes are wonderful - the straight ones are long and challenging (some with ditches), the shorter ones are doglegged both ways (13th is a very tight left), the par 3s are attractive and well guarded. The greens were in great condition and still running fast and true despite a good drenching. An unforgettable experience. Particular thanks to Anna Guss who made the round possible and Andy Attard who was only one mad enough to join me!

Good challenge with great views

My first visit to this Wiltshire downland course, and a successful one at that - I managed to win the 2013 Seniors Open (40 points)! The clubhouse and facilities are modest but the Pro and his shop have a vg reputation. The course itself is quite undulating with a few sloping fairways but some of the views from the elevated holes are spectacular. The par3s are very challenging although luckily for me this is where I made my score. All in good condition. A bit off the beaten track but well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Excellent standard being maintained

See my review from Aug12 for basic details. Returned for the Aug13 Seniors Open and pleased to report that everything remains excellent at TGGC. The course was in first class condition and the food is the best that I have sampled at any golf club - for a £28 entry fee this is well worth an hours journey for those of us who live towards the west of the country.

Good course - better condition

Three years since I last played here, and am pleased to report that the course was in much better condition. Greens are now very good - fairways good - tee boxes ok - bunkers horrendous. This is though a really interesting layout and well worth playing (please see previous reviews) - as it is municipal the green fees are always competitive.

Disappointing

Paid £65 to play in a society event at this prestigious Birmingham club - ended up disappointed. Founded in 1892 and set in 300 acres of beautiful parkland this is undoubtedly a majestic 27 hole complex. The club has hosted various top events and is universally accepted as one of the finest courses in the Midlands. Personally, though, I found it very uninspiring - as one would expect, all in vg condition but featureless and lacking in interest for me. Clubhouse is large but rather ugly from the outside and lacking character inside. The food we received was what I would expect from a cheap pay and play club. Not one for me - will be looking to try out other clubs in/around Birmingham to compare.

The Kendleshire Golf Club

Pleasantly Surprised

Played here in the Seniors Open, great value at £22.50 including a nice lunch. The Kendleshire is on the northern outskirts of Bristol, a 16 year old 27 hole layout. American style with mounding and plenty of water, we played the Hollows/Ruffets combination which was very interesting - undulations, doglegs and a combination of lakes. All facilities in good order with practice/chipping/putting areas aplenty. Well worth playing/returning to.

Interesting Downland Course

I played in the club Seniors Open, great value at £14. Situated between Devizes and Calne in North Wiltshire this is a high quality example of a downland golf course. While it is relatively short by modern standards, every hole poses a different question, a small green, an elevated tee and so on - the sloping fairways and strategically placed bunkers give you plenty to think about. The course is very well presented and some of the views are spectacular. The clubhouse is a little old fashioned but the catering is excellent and the members very friendly. The standard green fee of £36 is decent value - £20 after 4.00 at weekends is a snip.

Historic Downland Course

My first visit under the monthly auspices of the DCGA. The club has a rich history - established in the late 1800s, constructed by Open Champion JH Taylor and reshaped by the renowned HS Colt in 1927, it was also played regularly by Samuel Ryder (founder of the Ryder Cup). The course is high on the downs between Dorchester and Weymouth and is highly rated amongst the Dorset options. In lovely condition, I found the combination of sloping fairways and very quick greens a real, but enjoyable, challenge. Clubhouse is a little dilapidated and the standard green fee at £40 is a bit toppish but twilight at £17 is very good value. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Knowle Golf Club

Lush, lush

Established in 1905, this is one of Bristol's top clubs/courses. It is lush in both terms of the word - old school, "growing luxuriantly" - new skool, "great, brilliant". A nice mix of holes which are tightened by clinging rough (although not quite up to Merion standards!) and tree lined fairways. A couple of steep climbs early on but fairly flat from 7 onwards. Excellently presented with a sociable feel to the clubhouse. Seniors Open was a snip at £12 but normal green fee of £30 (£20 twilight) is still good value. Highly recommended.

Lovely Course - Miserable Weather

Played in late May under the auspices of the Dorset County Golf Association. Unfortunately, a miserable day for any time of the year but in late May most inhospitable/unwelcome. A lovely coastal course with good views over the adjoining bays and Lyme Regis itself. All in good order despite the wet conditions, apart from the bunkers which are a disappointment for a course of this quality. Well worth a visit - it would be glorious on a fine day. Vg value at £40 standard and £20 twilight.

Premier Heathland Course

BGC calls itself "The Premier Heathland Course in the South of England" - very subjective but it is certainly up there with the best. Currently ranked 45 in England's Top100. Founded in 1898, then redesigned in 1914 by the legendary Harry Colt, Broadstone boasts a very challenging layout, the quality of which continues to attract a host of top national amateur events. The terrain is very undulating which affords great views from the elevated tees. The 7th hole, is one of the toughest par4s that I have ever played - the surrounding scenery merely serves as an added distraction! Friendly clubhouse for such a top quality course. Standard green fee of £68 is good value, when compared with other Top100 courses.

Undecided....

HGC founded in 1907, is a traditional members club. The course is situated in tranquil countryside with expansive views of the Chiltern Hills. My first play, in the Seniors Open. The course is very pleasant and well maintained but I am not sure whether I like it or not - sloping fairways, blind shots, raised greens combined with poor play added up to a mixed experience. Hospitality was excellent though and I will happily return next year when hopefully my game will be in better shape to form a more considered opinion of the course.

A New Favourite

Visited Devon for a couple of days to watch Ladies County Finals at EDGC (Budleigh Salterton) and whilst there took the opportunity to play the nearby Teignmouth GC. A real beauty - wonderful views in different directions on the two nines and yet the course itself is relatively flat moorland. Designed and laid my Alister Mackenzie (Augusta National) in 1924 the course is apparently little changed since then. Not as easy as it might appear due to, what I would imagine is, an almost permanent stiff breeze - heather and bunkers await errant shots and the greens are fast carrying subtle borrows. £20 after 3.00 - an absolute steal.

Stiff but Enjoyable Challenge

My second visit - 3 years in between. Seniors Open this time. A very enjoyable course with good variety of holes and excellent views from the numerous elevations. All in excellent condition. Many of the holes are high up which today resulted in a 3club breeze/wind - add in lightning fast greens and a real challenge was presented. The members are a friendly bunch. Well worth a visit if you are in the area - just 5 minutes from M4J15.

Changes Afoot

CGC is easily accessible from M4J17. Recently the club have sold the land at the front of the site for development of a Care Home - this has enabled them to build a new clubhouse and redevelop the course including the sculpting of five new holes. As a result everything is a bit of a mess at the moment but the potential improvements are already evident. The course as it currently stands is pleasant parkland - short at only 5.5 off the yellows the greens however provide protection with subtle borrows. All in good nick. Seniors Open priced at £19 for a round and 2 course buffet - great value. Will return in a couple of years to see how things shape up then.

A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

This is a beautiful course but boy is it tough. Currently ranked 89th in England's Top 100 Courses, but underrated at this level in my opinion. Exclusivity is maintained by a visitor green fee of £90 - I found the members friendly though despite managing to hit one of their buggies with my drive on the 10th!www.top100golfcourses.co.uk/htmlsite/productdetails.asp?id=1292 - the video embedded in the link attached gives a better impression of the course than any of my words could - if only I had found it as easy to play as the presenter did!

One of Wiltshire's best

Founded in 1908, TGGC is one of the best courses in Wiltshire (albeit this is one of the more barren counties for quality layouts). I would describe it as a downland course, with a nice variety of holes. Always in good condition, although the rough is extremely penal at the moment. Played in the Seniors Open with an 80 year old member who scored 25 points on the front9! Excellent value at £25 - friendly clubhouse staff and a super 2 course buffet.

Green Course

Please see my May12 review of FHGC as a whole. Yesterday, amongst downpours and monsoons I was fortunate to play in the Seniors Open (superb value at £45). My first outing on the Green Course, which is now firmly in my Top10 ever played. There are two 9 hole loops, although these are a mix of front/back 9s (confusing I know!). 1-4 and 14-18 are around the clubhouse and similar in appearance to the Blue and Red courses; 5-13 are slightly apart and absolutely beautiful. Everything in pristine condition - greens perfect. WOW!

Very pleasantly surprised

Entered the Seniors Open here with no great expectations. Pleased to report that the course proved to be FAR better than I had imagined. A good mix of par 3/4/5s add up to a balanced card of par72. Spacious, changes of elevation and dog legs make for an interesting layout. Most impressive though was the conditioning of the course which was fabulous, particularly given that this is a pay and play facility - a great effort by the greenstaff. Will definitely be back.

Very enjoyable layout

Despite playing very poorly, I enjoyed my first visit to CGC. I took part in the Seniors Open, which was well organised and good value. The course is relatively short even off the white tees but far from easy. Long par 3s, water features and tight doglegs make it a very interesting challenge. Good course conditioning and a comfortable clubhouse make this well worth a visit at the right price.

A lesser known Surrey/Berks delight

EBGC was founded in 1903 and is amongst the plethora of beautiful courses around the Surrey/Berkshire boundary. You are greeted by a welcoming entrance/clubhouse which leads you onto a fine/friendly course. The yardage (yellows 6000) is shortish but narrow tree lined fairways, plentiful heather and clever bunkering makes for a good test - the par 3 holes are particularly memorable, especially the 5th which is protected by a ditch to the front and left and a hungry bunker to the right. Conditioning was excellent notwithstanding evidence of recent flooding (course closed the previous day). The Seniors Open was excellent value at £34 - standard green fees are more pricey. I will return next year - hopefully it will be a little drier!

American Golf in an English setting

July 2nd - grey, wet, windy, miserable. Not the sort of day that I would usually choose to play but having stumped up £50 in advance to play in the Seniors Open there was a level of commitment that I could not avoid!
TOGC is located on the outskirts of Oxford, close to the M40. The course was designed/built in 1993 by renowned architect Rees Jones and is very much in an American style - large, sweeping fairways; large, sweeping bunkers; and yes you've guessed it, large, sweeping greens. Water comes in to play on some holes, the 8th and 17th being the most memorable. The clubhouse is huge, with excellent locker rooms. Prima facie it is expensive but I sense that they are struggling financially as deals are promoted regularly. £50 for my event (18 holes plus lunch) was excellent value, although the two guys who paid £15.20 for a couple of glasses of wine weren't so sure!

One of Dorset's lesser lights

Heathland course situated on the Poole/Bournemouth border - one of Dorset's lesser known clubs. Many interesting holes, tree lined narrow fairways and excellent greens. The welcome from the clubhouse is always very warm. Weekday green fee is £28 which is great value - this is an excellent alternative to the more prestigious/expensive local clubs (Ferndown/Broadstone/Parkstone).

Not quite what it appears

Silvermere has been on my "to play" list for some time - thanks to an invite from Brigitte the opportunity came today. I agree with much of what has been said by previous reviewers although I do not rate it as highly. There are some lovely holes (6 & 17 in particular) but many are ordinary and there is an "up and back" feel to the stretch (7-16) over the road. I was also disappointed in the conditioning of the course - the bunkers and their surrounds were terrible and in places there was an "overgrown" look to things (although the greens were fine). Having said all of this I still recommend that you go and form your own opinion - the guest rate of £23 is certainly decent value.

A Superb Facility Overall - Blue Course

Frilford Heath, is one of the best golfing facilities in the country. It enjoys 54 holes of "Championship" standard (a distinction shared with only Wentworth and Woburn in England), and whilst it does not have quite the majesty of these two complexes it is still very impressive. I played the Blue Course today in one of the Trilby Tour Pre Championship Qualifier events. Despite being unavoidably wet in places due to heavy rainfall of late the course was beautifully conditioned - lush fairways, great bunkering and amazingly conditioned greens. I have rated the course itself a "4" as I felt that in design/scenic terms it was slightly lacking in a "wow factor" nevertheless I would happily play again and look forward to also trying out the Red and Green courses before too long. Fabulous clubhouse and practice areas. Day tickets at £85 or £55 after 1.00 are excellent value .

Scenic course - but choose a nice day!

Currently ranked 66th in England's Top100. This is one of the most picturesque courses on the South Coast with breathtaking views over Poole Harbour to the "mainland". I have been fortunate to play it on a number of occasions previously, always in calm and bright weather. Today, however, it really showed it's teeth - gale force icy winds and squally showers. For a course of this ranking the condition is relatively poor but this should not deter you from taking the opportunity to play - the 5th hole is one of my "greats", reminiscent of Pebble Beach (which I have only seen on tv). Very nice clubhouse which takes advantage of the views - pleased to say that the showers were excellent, and much needed! Standard summer green fee is good value; twilight (after 3.00 is a snip).

Beautiful course - Challenging walk

Currently ranked 95th in England this is a rural gem. Tranquil and peaceful - I played it in early Spring when the trees were still bare but it must look even better in Summer/Autumn. Some humungous elevation changes, and long distances between tees but in my opinion still better to walk as buggies have to be kept on the tracks. Reminded me of two other SW courses - Dartmouth for the undulations and St Mellion (Nicklaus) for the design and use of water features. A must play if you are in the area - £49 summer green fee is fair, £32 twilight is vg value. Also attached to an excellent hotel - worth keeping an eye open for deals.

Trilby Tour Pre Qualifier

Played here today in the above - £60 as opposed to the standard green fee of £145! Although, I didn't play well I really enjoyed the course and surroundings, which often feature on TV in Charity/Corporate type events. Parkland; very well maintained; good bunkering; excellent water features. The par 3s are outstanding. Many beautiful vistas. I would happily pay £60 to play here again, and would hope to score better next time around. I certainly recommend at the right price.

Historic but divides opinion

Ranked 89th in England in my 2007/8 guide this was a gentle warm down after my previous day at RL&SA. Designed by Vardon and Colt in 1907 the course is a traditional parkland layout regularly being used as an Open Qualifying venue and hosting the annual Peter McEvoy Trophy (which has seen winners such as Justin Rose and Lee Westwood). Whilst it is very pleasant, to my mind it is no more than that - reviewers elsewhere seem to agree with me although there are others who rate it very highly. Currently the fairways are in very poor condition, although an irrigation system is now being installed - greens and bunkers are fine. Winter tees are in operation (the main tees are literally lush!)for which I received a £5 discount down to £40 - £30 would have been fairer. Lovely clubhouse with extensive patio and veranda overlooking 18th green - always a plus for me.

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club

A wonderful experience

I used the "Dormy House" package to play the course ahead of this years Open Championship there. £180 for overnight accom, dinner, breakfast and lunch, and one round, amounted to great value. Everything was of the highest quality and whilst all the staff were very professional they were also most friendly and welcoming, which was contrary to my experience at Royal St Georges last year. The course itself is ranked 6th in my 2007/8 guide and is unusually positioned in a built up area, flanked by a railway line. Relatively flat, it is not too tough off the "general play" tees - most of the bunkers are GUR at the moment, which as they are all deep and riveted, does help scoring considerably! The greens are reasonably straightforward as well although they will probably be twice as fast come July! Highly recommended.

The Lesser of Two Evils!

There are two courses at Donnington, (Newbury outskirts), just off the A34. Donnington Grove is the better known - a monster where a buggy is a prerequisite. Donnington Valley is the near neighbour and is a much gentler test. It is a fairly typical "hotel course", with many mid distance "up and back" par4s. The most interesting holes are towards the end of the round where water and elevation changes come into play. The greens are excellent - hand cut, large and in some cases very undulating (this is where I lost the majority of my shots). I paid £19 - decent value. I would go back but probably just a once a year course for me.

Good facilities but a slightly disappointing course

Effectively a first time play for me. Lovely clubhouse and very good practice facilities but the course itself was disappointing in comparison. Everything was well maintained but the front9 in particular is rather "up and back" - the back9 has more variety and was more enjoyable. The fairways were very lush but already a little soft underfoot - they must get very wet in winter. Paid £18 "twilight" rate which was decent value.

Enjoyable visit

There has been a golf course/club on the Merrow Downs for 125 years, and I certainly enjoyed the historic feel of the place. The course is relatively short off the yellows but very undulating in places making it far from easy - all aspects were in lovely condition and many of the greens have interesting contours. There are a number of excellent holes but particularly worthy of mention are the 17th, a tough sweeping down and up dogleg, and the 18th which affords good views back to the welcoming clubhouse. Well worth a visit - I would look to return.

Played "The Marquess" in the Mens Open. £65 was excellent value for the opportunity to play a super course, whilst also included in the price were refreshments beforehand, lunch after and a course planner. Everything about the Woburn set up is top notch and the new clubhouse is fabulous (altho the old locker rooms are looking a bit tired now). "The Marquess" was in great nick and some of the holes are majestic but I did feel that in places it lacked the class of "The Dukes". It played long off the whites but the tricky greens were my own downfall as 43 putts indicates! Woburn is a great venue and it's pricing (particularly the offers) does make it accessible to the likes of you and me. Looking to play "The Duchess" next....

Lovely course - great value

My first play of this downland course with wonderful views over the Stour and Tarrant Valleys. It is a combination of old 9 holes (115 years - one of the oldest in the country) and new 9 holes (18 years) in a great setting. The course was in fantastic condition, particularly given the exposed and undulating nature of the terrain - the greens were excellent and the fairways were some of the best that I have seen. The clubhouse is modern and well served and the proshop very friendly. I played at the twilight rate of £17.50 -really excellent value.

Mixed Bag

MVGC is part of the Marriott Hotel chain. A 27 hole layout with driving range and other practice facilities. The main ("Meon") course has a good variety of nice holes - fairways were a bit bare and scrappy but greens/fringes were in decent nick. There is no clubhouse as such - and the hotel prices are outrageous.
The course can get very busy with corporates/hotel guests etc so choose your time carefully - with this proviso it is worth a visit (deals available online).

Historic Venue

Continuing in my quest to play the Top 100 courses in England - this is ranked 45 (in the book that I am using) and was the venue for the 1957 Ryder Cup (a little different from the ultra modern Celtic Manor!). Established in 1891 and laid out on common land it has a mixed heathland and moorland feel. In immaculate condition, the turf is lovely, the greens are subtly borrowed, very fast and well protected by bunkers. The two sides of the course are divided by a busy main road which takes away some of the charm of this layout and I found the clubhouse facilities old fashioned and unwelcoming. Nevertheless, I did enjoy my outing (the course was deserted!) but the £60 green fee would dissuade me from returning in a hurry.

COURSE MAINTENANCE NEEDS ATTENTION

This is a nice 18 hole Par 3 course, which I enjoy playing now and again on Summer evenings. Money has been spent recently on setting up a new Pro shop and converting the Clubhouse to an independent restaurant but to my mind the state of the course itself has suffered as a result. The greens (previously of good quality) were particularly disappointing and some of the bunkers were rather bare. Normal weekday green fee is £13 (toppish) but after 6.00 p.m. you can get on for £8 (decent value) - they do need to get the greens back in better ordeR though.

Not in the Premiership....

Currently ranked 57 in England's Top 100 courses. Opened in 2005 I have wanted to play it for some time but you cannot "pay & play" - eventually found a "Charity Day" for £75 which fitted the bill. My feelings about the course/club are mixed and best summarised by pros and cons.
Pros: High quality greens; some great/beautiful holes; very well maintained/manicured.
Cons: Modest clubhouse/locker rooms; stony paths; scrappy areas quite an eyesore; poor/absent signage; a tricksy 18th.
In my opinion this club is trying to be something than it is not with it's exclusivity (£5k to join and £2.5k annual membership) and very restricted ability to play. It IS a very good course but there are plenty of others that I would choose to play again ahead of this one.

Currently ranked 2nd best course in England and the venue for this years Open Championship. I travelled to Kent to take advantage of the £90 Winter rate. For my own part, give me Sunningdale, Woodhall Spa, Walton Heath and others above RSG but this won't stop me seeking out the likes of Birkdale, L&SA, Liverpool etc for more links experiences.

"WINTER" IS HERE

This is my home club. We have enjoyed good conditions throughout the summer with the course generally being better maintained than many of its more prestigious and expensive counterparts. We are now on winter tees (some mats, some secondary grass tees), and today we played on "frost greens" (pins always at the front), however, the fairways and greens remain in great nick which is a real testament to the greenkeeping team as the course is "pay and play". For those of you who don't know the set up here, it is a flat parkland course, with a fairly open front 9 but a much tighter back. There is a good quality driving range and overall it is a good value venue. I am happy to "host" anyone who would like to try it out (no I am not on commission!).

The good news - I secured a round here for £10 via teetimes.co.uk; the not so good news - I was joined by a 7 handicap member who proposed that we played off the whites! Nevertheless, a very enjoyable round on a beautiful late autumn day. The front 9 is straightforward but longish - the back is shorter but more interesting. Most of the holes are tree lined - in autumn, attractive from afar but not so appealing if you are amongst them! The course condition was slightly below my expectations but it is well worth playing and an absolute steal at £10.

The Rose Bowl Golf Course

Pleasantly surprised

This is a 9 hole loop that you play twice off different tees. It is part of the Hampshire CC Rose Bowl complex. It is currently being developed into an 18 hole course (along with resort hotel etc, etc) and there is a fair amount of disruption from passing lorries at present. However, the course itself is in great nick - lush manicured fairways and great undulating putting surfaces - good bunkers as well. It is relatively short but far from easy (my first visit). The 4/13th is one of the most scenic holes in the area - a sweeping uphill par4 where anything short of the green runs right back down the fairway almost to your feet! I enjoyed the course much more than I expected and would recommend it to others although please don't expect too much of the the "clubhouse" and practice facilities until the upgrade is complete (another 4 years away apparently!).

IMPROVING COURSE

A 36 hole venue which has recently seen some dramatic changes to the Greenwood course (the more challenging of the two). Ten new holes have been created from scratch and the remaining eight existing holes have been redesigned in a sympathetic manner so that the whole blends together. I was pleasantly surprised at the good condition of all aspects (fairways, greens, tees, bunkers) given that the new design was only opened in April - when the young trees start to mature it will be a really good test. Great views over the surrounding countryside feature although there are regular climbs required to enjoy these! A range to practice beforehand and excellent hospitality afterwards add to the overall package here.

DORSET LINKS

This club, founded in 1897, is situated on the Dorset coastal cliff between Christchurch and Lymington. The current 27 holes are a combination of the original Harry Colt design from 1932 and newer holes which were completed in 1992. There are 3 9hole loops each of which start and finish close to the clubhouse. Many forms of golfing challenge await the player from the shot over the water to the island green on Needles 9, to links style bump and run shots to the greens close to the coastline. Sea breezes and great views also add to an enjoyable test of golf.

The clubhouse is lovely, commanding superb views across the Solent to the Needles on the Isle of Wight, and along to Old Harry Rocks at Swanage. It is also situated overlooking the island green referred to above which can prove to be very entertaining!

Standard green fee for the day is £44 (good value for 27 holes) but the twilight rate of £24 is a bargain. Open events are also available - well run and sociable.

A TOP HAMPSHIRE COURSE

This course was originally laid out by renowned golf architect Harry Colt, some 95 years ago. It is currently ranked 78th best in England and is certainly in the top handful in Hampshire.

The course consists of two loops of nine holes created from heathland, with fairways surrounded by heather, pine, birch and oak trees. There are 5 par3s (4 of them uphill) but only 2 par5s making the layout on the short side, however, many of the par4s are doglegs which adds to the challenge.

Blackmoor is home to a number of amateur and professional competitions, including the Selborne Salver which attracts many top amateurs and has been won by the likes of Justin Rose in the past.

The green fee of £45 reflects the quality of the course but the twilight rate of £30 is decent value.

A LITTLE GEM

This course stands on high ground above Monmouth with superb views of the Welsh Hills, Forest of Dean & Wye Valley. It is sharply undulating with a buggy recommended for the athleticly challenged! Despite having to contend with steady rain for the early part of the round I really enjoyed holes 1-12 particularly number 6 which is one of the loveliest par 3s that I have come across. 13-18 are not as good but overall the course is a real treat which was a pleasant surprise as a couple of "locals" had warned me against it! Everything in good condition for their Open Competition which I expect to enter again this time next year. Recommended.

TOUGH TEST

Although only opened in 1993, this course has matured quickly and the quality of both fairways and greens is very high. The greens were all constructed to the USGA specifications and are very true and FAST! SUPER MUNICIPAL

This course has always been regarded as one of the best municipals in the country. I started playing here some 20 years ago and the return today, in perfect conditions, brought back fond memories - it also reminded me how much I have improved in that time despite the regular frustrations that we all suffer! Most holes are tree lined and straight but there are regular elevation changes to add variety. I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent condition throughout (tees, fairways, greens, bunkers) which was much better than many more expensive courses that I have played this year. £17 green fee is super value even though the Clubhouse/changing rooms are basic to say the least. Recommended.

SAUSAGE SANDWICH WITH SALAD!

Played here for the first time in their Open Competition. First impressions were very favourable - lovely looking course with clubhouse/patio set above a couple of the tees. It is a true parkland setting, much lusher than any other course that I have played through this dry summer. In my opinion, holes 1-10 are better than the remainder with great views from some - number 7 is a lovely downhill par3 with stream and pond awaiting any mishit shot whilst number 10 is a short dogleg with the drive up a very steep "cardiac hill". Greens were in good condition but relatively slow - bunkers very good with lovely quality sand - fairways mixed, some great some not. The course is very conveniently located just 5 minutes from the M5 motorway (J 17). My Sausage Sandwich was served with a dressed salad - now there's a sign of quality for you. Great value at £15 - the Comp, not the Sausage Sandwich!

LOVELY CLUB

RCGC is north of Portsmouth/Havant and just 5 minutes off J2 of the A3. I have played the course a number of times on Society days but this visit was to play in one of their Open Comps which always span 3 days in August. A traditional parkland course which is reasonably straightforward but played tough (for me) off the "tips". Everything was in "apple pie" order - first class organisation, spotters out on the course (a first for me) and very friendly staff/members. I paid £18 to enter (excellent value) and will be returning same time next year - highly recommended if you can make it as well.

This is the tougher of the two Portsmouth Municipal courses. It is set high on the cliffs above the city affording great views. The front 9 is very undulating and challenging; the back 9 is flatter and more straightforward. I played during their "Open Weekend" and would have expected the course to be in better nick - dry fairways are the norm in the South at present but scrappy tees, no bunker rakes and woolly greens were a disappointment. Will go back next year though because the course has got plenty of interest.

PLEASANTLY SURPRISED

Sutton Green GC is situated between Guildford and Woking, with the classic courses of West Hill, Woking and Worplesdon not far away. It is a new club, established in 1994, but the maturity of some of the holes belies this. The course is very well maintained, the fairway sprinkler system really earning its keep this summer. Our 4ball averaged 35 points so it is not a difficult scoring course but there is a challenge of some sort on most of the holes. A most enjoyable visit, which I hope to repeat sooner rather than later. Clubhouse looked nice although didn't have chance to use it.

NOT AS EASY AS IT MIGHT APPEAR

Burley Golf Club was established in 1905. The course was set out on Forestry land and is a typical heathland course that remains largely unspoiled today. Although there are only 9 greens, the tees are different for the front and back 9s adding some variety. The greens are renowned for their quality and certainly lived up to their reputation - remarkable given that the ponies have a free rein! Overall, nowhere near as easy as it might appear from the card and with a challenging walk thrown in, Burley is well worth a visit to sample New Forest golf in the raw. Also the first time that I have come across an "honesty box" to pay your green fee!

PLEASANT SURPRISE

I have played at Wellow quite a bit over the years but this is the best that I have seen it. Ok, it is former farm land but everything is in good nick, particularly the greens which are more interesting than you usually find on this type of course. It is pretty flat but the rough is like hay during summer, and there are a few ditches to be negotiated, so you need to keep on the straight and narrow. The clubhouse always has a welcoming atmosphere and the catering is good. There are 3 loops of 9, so a good value day out can be enjoyed here.

This course is currently ranked 119th best in England and I took the opportunity to play in their Open Comp today. Easy to find, the club is just off the M50. A parkland course with tight tree lined fairways, regular changes in elevation and many devilish greens. We played off "the tips", so at 6451+ yards it was not short either! Everything was in lovely condition. Holes 8 & 16 share a spectacular elevated tee. With normal visitor green fees at £40 and less for the Comps or twilight this is a great value venue.

Played the Roman Road course for the second time yesterday. For a modern track it is very challenging as one might expect from a course that has hosted PGA Tour events. Most of the holes have some interest, whether it be change in elevation, change in direction, plentiful bunkering, undulating green, or a combination of these features. It is quite a tough walk uphill and downdale and there are some long distances from green to next tee. Fairways and greens were in excellent condition but the tees were surprisingly bare and scrappy. We paid £17.50 on a 241 deal which was excellent value.

NICE ENOUGH

West Hill is the youngest of the trinity of "Ws" (Woking & Worplesdon being the others) located in this area of Surrey. The course is on undulating sandy ground and the fairways are tight, being lined with pine, birch and heather. The greens were in beautiful condition when I played. Reasonably gentle off the "yellows" and an enjoyable walk. Nice clubhouse and pro shop. Currently ranked as 29th best course in England, I would not place it this high but well worth a visit nevertheless. Twilight rate is £40 after 3.00.

Liphook GC was founded in 1922. The course is classic heathland spanning the Hampshire/West Sussex county boundaries. BRAMSHAW (FOREST COURSE)

This is one of my favourite courses. It was built privately on New Forest heathland in about 1865 and is the oldest course in Hampshire. The ever-changing scenery of humps, hollows and meandering streams test old fashioned golfing skills in an idyllic setting.
The roaming ponies and deer only add to the charm.

It can get rather wet (as we found following heavy overnight rain), and you certainly need to be prepared to "take the rough with the smooth" but overall a MUST PLAY.

Only 2 minutes from M27J1, Bramshaw also has an excellent parkland course (The Manor) so it is a great venue for a day out. Good value winter deals are usually available as well. Excellent clubhouse/staff.

A great Winter course

This is my home course and whilst far from my favourite "track" it really comes into its own this time of year. It is based on chalk so drains very well and has the advantage of being quite high - as a result it is remarkably dry given the amount of recent rainfall. There are hardly ever temporary greens in play (only when hard frost I think) and grass tees remain in use on all but the four Par3 holes where the mats are decent. For those of you struggling to play on "quagmires" at present SW is definitely worth a try.

A Crown course and in my opinion one of the better ones. Well maintained with good variety in hole lengths and types - lovely views over the marina and harbour. "Signature" holes are 4&5, both over lakes - 4 is a long par 3 and 5 is a sharp dogleg par 4. 15&16 are a couple of very nice par 5s. Worth a trip South for those of you based in Surrey & Berkshire (much better than Wickham, it's Crown neighbour).

A Pleasant Surprise

Worldham exceeded my fairly low expectations. Whilst relatively short at 6257 yards off the whites and 5887 yards off the yellows, the narrow fairways and undulating greens mean that scoring is far from easy.
The par of the course is 72, which is made up of two halves of 36, there are three par three’s and three par fives. The first eight holes provide the stiffest test as these are VERY tight but if you can negotiate these holes with your score still intact then you will have a great chance to go on and return a good score. Course in good nick. Excellent full breakfast. Driving range on site. Deals available to play for £10 wich is vg value.

This is a "farmer's field" but a a pretty decent one at that. A good range of holes with four 5s and four 3s. Quite wide open generally but trouble does lurk in the form of fairway/greenside bunkers and small copses if you stray. Fairways a bit dry due to recent shortage of rain but greens played well. Pleasant clubhouse. Driving range. We paid £15 - this is about right for this course. Easy access from A303.

A New Forest gem.

Played here today as part of the club's annual "Open Day" - received a very friendly welcome. This course, designed by Harry Colt, is recognised as one of the best in the beautiful New Forest area. Not long but "shaping" required on some holes and ditches to be avoided on others - a good challenge for all levels with interest being maintained throughout. Four good par 3s. Very enjoyable, particularly with the autumn colours starting to show on the tree lined surrounds. Standard fees are high - look out for deals like todays!

CONUNDRUM!

A bit of a conundrum this one. A really nice layout with some very attractive holes. Greens and aprons in excellent condition. Fairways and green surrounds very poor - bare in some places, patchy grass in others - plenty of dodgy lies to be found. As a Crown member I would definitely return but it is a shame that the course is not being shown off to its best. Good clubhouse and practice facilities.

Pleasantly Surprised

This is a Golf Resort to the east of Dorset (approx 1 hour from M3J12). There are 3 loops of 9 - Lakeland, Parkland & Woodland. We played the first two, which included many holes of great variety - the bunkering throughout is spectacular added to which there are ditches and lakes to negotiate. Undulating and well shaped greens in vg condition. 241 vouchers are accepted making this good value at £20. It is popular with societies so advisable to book a tee time around these. Excellent snacks in the friendly clubhouse.

This is a monster!

This is a tough track for a mid handicapper. 6576 yards off the yellows and 7108 off the whites! Nicely contoured fairways, strategically placed bunkers and well maintained greens makes for a pleasant challenge. The distances between some greens and tees are massive though and a buggie is a prerequisite for all but the very fittest. This is my second visit and I have still to decide whether the pros outweigh the cons.

Pleasantly Surprised!

A Crown club. Enjoyed my first visit here. The course is relatively short but the regular changes in elevation make it an interesting challenge. The fairways were rather dry and patchy but the greens were EXCELLENT. Clubhouse and locker room very basic - very good coffee.

NEVER AGAIN!

This is the 125th course that I have played in my 20 years golfing and is unquestionably the worst - it is TERRIBLE. My playing partner summarised it as "tight and tatty" but I could not find anything as complimentary as that! The front 9 comprises a shade over 2000 yards and is so cramped that there are balls flying in all directions - hard hats should be issued. The course is poorly maintained although surprisingly the greens are ok. The one plus point - it only takes 2.5 hours to get round - please don't risk it though.

Golf in the Raw!

This is golf at its most natural. Perched on the top of Cleeve Hill (the highest point of the Cotswolds) the course makes its way across the escarpment amongst sheep, gorse, walkers, runners, etc providing many spectacular views. It is very TOUGH though - sharp climbs, blind shots, strong winds and miniscule greens all adding to the challenge. I only managed 10 holes before dusk set in but was heading for a maximum of 30 stableford points. Not for the faint hearted but those who enjoy their golf "au naturel" will love it.

First time here. 241 at £10 each is the current deal but there are usually deals of some sort to be had here. A straightfwd layout typical of a hotel course. Greens in vg condition. Beware the "hotel 4ball" - we were stuck behind one for the back 9! Lovely changing rooms and fabulous showers. Good value for £10.

Great Fun!

First time here - £24 online. Mainly parkland with a handful of downland holes thrown in for good measure. After a straightforward start, holes 2-4 are steeply uphill with good views over the Chiltern Hills. Then follows a long sequence of flattish ground before the 17th (a great hole) brings you back to "sea level" with the 18th inviting a good drive back to the clubhouse. All in super condition. Friendly locals. Nice lounge area. Halfway hut (available twice!). A real good fun challenge. Please leave good time to find it though....!

The clubhouse and first hole give a real WOW factor. After that things settle down and you are left with a pleasant course encompassing a variety of challenges - plentiful bunkering and a variety of water hazards in particular. I enjoyed my first round here although I was a little disappointed in the presentation/maintenance of the course given its location. VG value at £20 though - online deal.

Played here for the first time today - £12 on a special deal. The course is very well manicured with lush fairways, sensible grading of rough and excellent greens - well done to the greenkeeping team. Reasonably straightforward but at 6200 pretty long off the yellows. Unfortunately a handful of the holes have a landfill tip as a backdrop which is quite unsightly. I prefer Dummer and Sandford Springs in the locality.

I was fortunate to play "The Longcross" for free today. A course in the Surrey tradition, with rolling fairways set amongst avenues of trees. Plenty of changes in elevation and sharp doglegs to be overcome before reaching large greens with subtle breaks - and it is TIGHT! Playable off the yellows as long as you keep it straight. Very enjoyable and I look fwd to playing "The Bernard Hunt" soon. Excellent clubhouse facilities. Well worth watching out for deals to discount the standard premium green fees.

This is fast becoming one of my favourite courses in the Hants/Surrey area. It is like a mini Sunnungdale/Woburn with rolling fairways set amongst avenues of trees/pines. Relatively short but tight and interesting with changes of elevation and doglegs aplenty. Small greens in excellent condition. We played a Saturday 4ball for £60 after 3.00 p.m. - great value.

Ogbourne Downs claims to be the best downland course in Wilts and as it is the only one that I have played who am I to argue! Very natural - great views - good condition. My only criticism is an absence of signposting in places, when the next tee is not readily apparent. VG value at £20. Plenty of practice facilities altho I did not use. Friendly welcome from Pro Shop. Only 5 minutes from M4J15.

Played as part of a "Taster Week" - £12.50 each. There are plenty of interesting holes, with a variety of undulations and dog legs. 9-13 are weaker though - open and featureless. Greens were good and rarely flat so very challenging. Plenty of bunkers which whilst in good condition I struggled to get out of! Excellent prectice facilities and a good welcome from the pro shop. Well worth a visit if a discounted green fee can be found.

A very good gourse and a well run provate members club. I was fortunate enough to play here most recently for free as part of a "new membership promotion". The course is quite undulating with a mix of straightforward and challenging holes. It drains well and the greens are usually in excellent condition. Well worth a try if you haven't played here before - not sure what deals can be obtained though. Very impressive clubhouse and practice facilities have recently been uograded.

NEW FOREST GC

This is one of my favourite courses. It is right in the heart of the New Forest on protected land and shared with many of the NF ponies. As a result it has it's own local rules with preferred lies in play at all times and relief available from animal damage/droppings! It has seven Par 3s and a few short Par 4s but remains a decent challenge. Unfortunately the greens are poor at present due (I believe) to a greenkeeping aberration early in the season - a great shame. All staff are extremely friendly and the Trifle is first class!

The fairways were incredibly dry and as a result were running very fast - many shots just slightly off line ran off into the bushes/trees, although fortunately not mine! The greens were in good condition and very true. This remains the best Crown course (apart from St Mellion - Nicklaus) that I have played.

A high quality course, with changes in elevation, shaping of holes, water features and very fast greens to challenge players of all levels - the yellows are manageable for mid handicappers. A lot of building work going on at present to upgrade hotel, clubhouse, pro shop etc - when it is finished I would expect the green fees to go up but for the time being there are some good deals to be had online. Just a couple of minutes off the A3. Recommended.

A fairly straightforward "hotel" course, with water increasing the interest on a few hotels. Greens in good condition and fairways holding up against a prolonged dry spell. Green fee is £35 which is toppish but on a 2for1 £17.50 is reasonable. Bar prices extortionate. As a 2ball we got around in 3 hours which was a big plus.

This is the "flagship" venue of the Crown empire. There are 2 courses - Kernow (the hotel course) and Nicklaus (the championship course where the pro's are due to return in 2011). Great value at £0 for us Crown members!
The Nicklaus is fabulous but a brute - narrow undulating fairways, thick rough on steep surrounds, plentiful water hazards and tricky greens.
The Kernow is currently being redeveloped so suffering from a preponderance of par 3s and some temporary tees/greens - it should be finished by next summer.

A municipal course in the centre of Bournemouth - I played in one of the "Bournemouth Open" events today. Par 69 with 5x3 and only 2x5 but I found it really tough (off the whites). Most holes are tree lined and very narrow, and with the Par 3s averaging 200 yards+, there is very little margin for error. The fairways were a little scrappy in places but the greens were in great condition and VERY fast - 40 putts for me. There is an additional attraction of "local talent" parading around the facilities as there is a gym attached!

Found a good deal to play here via Direct Tee Times - £20. A longish, flattish, rather featureless course which is underpinned by the quality of its greens - enormous, very undulating and in excellent condition. Fairways played well. Well bunkered - a few could have been better raked by the early morning green staff. We played at 10.00 and found the course very quiet. Whilst I did not use the clubhouse, prima facie the facilities looked excellent.

One of the most attractive P&P courses in Hampshire, it was in great shape on May 1st with the gorse in its full glory. A good mix of short and long holes, the greens played true and the bunkers were well maintained. A good welcome from the clubhouse steward and an excellent Ploughmans Lunch. Highly recommended. An attractive and interesting parkland course. We played off the White Tees which makes it more of a challenge from the relatively short Yellows. Plenty of water in play. Opened in 1993, the course has been cleverly designed with two distinct and contrasting nine holes; an outward nine, set in parkland with lakes, water hazards and dog-legs and a stunning 'links style' inward nine with sand banks, broom and a host of challenges.
The back nine is really special, with high rivetted bunkers and hazards lurking on every hole offering a good test of golf; "Deception", the 15th with a ravine across the fairway, really does live up to its name!

Excellent clubhouse facilities lead to good value at £19 using 241 voucher.

SANDFORD SPRINGS GC

Three 9 hole courses provide a mix of play and the names adequately describe their characteristics, The Park, The Woods, and The Lakes. The Park Course is probably the least demanding of the three loops, with the signature 9th hole, being a short, down hill par 4 requiring an accurate long iron off the tee followed by a solid pitch to a green protected by two lakes. The Woods Course is set amongst mature trees creating a natural challenge. The signature hole is a testing downhill dogleg. Your tee shot falls into a chasm in front of you, with the second shot requiring an accurate pitch over water. The Lakes Course has water as the key feature. Five of the nine holes bring the wet stuff into play. The 21st is a long par 3 requiring particular attention and skill. The hole requires an accurate long club to reach a well guarded green surrounded by water. All in all a challenging mix of courses with very fast greens when I played in Spring09. Good clubhouse facilities.

Ham Manor Golf Club

HAM MANOR GC

The course dates back to 1936. Although the setting and the entire nature of the course is parkland, there is something of a links quality about the turf - good fairway lies and true, even paced greens.

The front nine wends it way through the Ham Manor Estate and is bordered by some lovely properties.
The back nine is completely rural with pleasant and tranquil views over the surrounding farmland and downs. The par of 70 is not easy to beat for although there are only two par fives they are both over 500 yards long and the short holes range from 143 to more than 200 yards. In addition there are several par fours in excess of 400 yards.

I didn't spend much time in the clubhouse so can't really comment upon that. A great website though.

On first play I found the course fairly straightfwd. There are some some good holes but a few weak ones, particularly with the yellow tees in advanced positions on occasions. In decent condition for early March although the greens were grooved in places (a form of tining). The 18th is a good finishing hole. I look forward to returning and playing in Summer conditions.

A Crown course. 1-9 and 14-18 are reasonably straightforward if a little tight at times; 10-13 are very tricky, up and down a steep incline with narrow fairways and raised/sunken greens. In pretty good condition for Feb end, although some signs that it could get very wet in places.
