OK....not in a dry spell

Stayed at the Donnington & Co hotel loosely attached to the course, and it was excellent. The course mind you was not the best. Not the courses or green keepers fault, just the weather conditions.
We complain at most courses about the condition of fairways, that is tripled if every fairway slopes as this did. Take a drive with a maximum of a 3 wood and watch the ball land, turn slightly up the sideways slope on the fairway, then abruptly turn the other way and roll for anything up to 60 yards - how do you stop it? Putt off of the tee perhaps, but there was no grass to stop the roll?!? I'll reiterate, it is NOT the courses fault, so if you visit, don't go in a drought.
Overall the course is good value for money - tee boxes are some of the best I've seen in the present conditions, and the greens are lush. Even the bunkers are above the normal 'par' of many courses.
If you were to play in late spring, no doubt the course would be playable - it is not as such now.

The clubhouse is just a bar with bacon/sausage baps that they heat in the microwave. Buy drinks in the shop NOT the clubhouse.

The hotel is excellent, service good, food very good, breakfast buffet - excellent. And a spa if you want it.

Pick the right conditions and I'm sure it would be great.

A 112 year old gem

A 112 year old gem. I've been told about this course and was not sure of what to expect. Well, I was warned it was a little 'up itself' amongst other things - thankfully when I bid on a 4 ball I was not let down.
When booking, after saying it was a voucher, they booked me in no problem. Then today we turned up and we're made welcome by both staff and members.
At £65 for a round, it looked a little overpriced, wrong, worth every penny. The tee boxes are in great condition, fairways are better than you'd expect with the baking weather conditions (according to members they are in poor condition and may reinstate pick and place very shortly...they do not need it!). Bunkers are all raked and have sand in them, not stones, not mud, SAND. All the streams and ditches have red stakes and red lines.

And what have I missed and left til last? The greens. What can I say, even in this drought, they are green and lush. None are flat, all have intricacies where you need to think about your putt. I'd love to go back with a turf cutter, as my garden would look wonderful with that grass.

The bar staff are helpful to the point of explaining which bitter has been used, and you can try the other before you buy if that's ok!

If you want a really enjoyable game of golf with a meal afterwards, try this course, you will not be disappointed..

Oh yes, the course has a stream run through it at the bottom of a small valley, then later you go down to the River Ouse. Views are stunning.

Go play it! If I lived in MK, this could well be my home club that I would join.

The Council concerned has decided to get around the ownership/usage by leasing the area to Wycombe Wanderers as a training cam, and so 9 holes are going from April. As such during this exceptionally wet period, the course is actually unplayable. Fairways are sodden, and if you stand too long on a green, you are liable to sink. Seems a pity the course will disappear in it's present form, but unless it is looked after properly, it will be no loss.

Stockley Park is a stones throw (almost) from the M4 and M40, so totally accessible, but does need work done on it. Unfortunately I had a League match that had to be played in January - yes the wettest we have had for ages - and the ground conditions were bad, but saying that, my course is not faring that much better. The tee boxes were atrocious, partly because of conditions, partly due to the relaying of new grass on the other tees, which look very nice, but are out of action at present. The fairways are in need of our new machine that provides 'shock-wave aeration', I'm sure they would be good to walk on then.
Bunkers were in an OK condition and the greens were quite true and in decent nick considering the present weather conditions.
For the area that it is in, the course offers good prices but I would be happier with my review if the conditions were better. Perhaps if the invite promised comes through for a summer game, I will re-visit these words.

If you look at the reviews below, they sum up virtually everything that I could say. The hotel was excellent, our group of 8 had it's own dining room and the food was superb. Then breakfast - how often today do you get waited service?
Two things from me would be:
1. the 13th par 3 over water, really needs a drop zone, especially when it blows a gale (as it did on my first day)
2. stop taking the mickey with the bar prices - £9 for a Guinness! (I don't but others did!)

Would you return? Too right I will, in fact it will be April '26.

Back again!

Played this course several times over the past few years. Built on the side of a chalk hill, so rarely closes due to weather and after the rain of yesterday will once again be green again (unlike most other courses at present!). It is a pretty fair test of your abilities, including the slightly 'Micky Mouse' 12th, that is only around 90 yards, but almost feels the same up the hill! Just remember, it is on the side of the hill, and though it will not make you want one leg shorter than the other - the ball will roll right/left.
Greens are excellent, bunkers are stone free but firm. Overall quality of the course is very good.
This is a members club, so priority will be given to them. There is a limited availability of buggies trolleys for hire.

Two sides to every story?!

Let's start with the courses:

This does apply to both. Generally the courses are in good, not great condition. The tee boxes have a lot of sand and earth showing through the sparse grass, but are flat and there are 4 on each to test your level of golf. Fairways are all in good nick after the wet weather of the past winter. The bunkers leave a lot to be desired. The sand is the super fine stuff - if they have topped it up - if not topped you are playing out of hard pan. Many bunkers are at present GUR with drainage apparently being put in, bot you'd hope that is not all the work that they do to them. The first cut is as expected from a resort course - not too penal, it makes a change to not have to delve into longer than is necessary to find a ball. Greens are not slow! And they are not flat, don't expect a simple put on most, unless you manage to get on (and stay) the right part of the green.

I'd play the courses again, but would not rush to stay at the hotel. Your group will possibly get a 10% discount on the bar, but if you don't ask for it when you order, don't expect it to be refunded later! The food was tasty, but with a group of 27, it appears they served them all at the same time and left them to go cool. The rooms are standard boxes, but nothing wrong with them - the cups, careful you don't poke your eye out with the handle.

The value for money was marked down purely on the hotel.

I played the Citrus courses with a group of friends 12 times over two weeks, and am certain to re-book us for next year.
The two courses are both parkland of sorts. Plenty of trees to hide your ball, plenty of water for them to swim in, and plenty of places to have a dessert trek (bunkers).
The Oliviers is the easier of the two, the first 9 being the flatter and more forgiving. Go astray and you could well end up on (or close to) another fairway - this is not to say there are balls flying back and forth). There is not a lot of water to worry about on this 18, but there are one or two blind holes, (9th, 4th 11th{green}). Second 9 has much elevation change - up and down hills. The 15th is probably the signature hole with the great views from the top of the hill to the green and much of both courses to view.
All in all the course is a good test, and much recommended.
The second course is La Foret - the forest. Yes many more trees and the course with more water to worry about. Also a lot tighter, hence the high slope index. This is achieved by a few OoB stakes and thicker tree areas that you would not want to go in. A warning is required for the 8th - it's downhill dogleg right, with water on the right all the way to the green and nasty tree areas to the left (wonder why there are always people selling balls there??). The 10th, you may want your crampons for climbing the hill, and of course, what goes up must come down - the blind dogleg right 12th! Finally you come to, first the 17th - a slight dogleg left, downhill and tight, then to cap it all is the 18th with a 190 yard drive to clear the water (or bail out in front of the red tee with a 120 yard flick).

The all in price for 5 DAYS of golf is around 400 Euros, and extra games are 70 Euros. Buggies 29E, trollies 8E.

The Shire London

Revisited - very much improved.

Have played the Shire a few times over the years, and must say it has improved year on year. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but the year on year maturing of the course shows.
First played here in 2006 with the VGS Open and was not impressed at all. But due to the course maturing and my game improving I would have to recommend to one and all - but as with many courses, it is now a little overpriced unless you can 'get a deal'.
6 x par 3's, 6 x par 4's and 6 x par 5's. Plenty of sand to get into, and loads of water to lose them in - the first hole has an annual retrieval rate of in excess of 6000 balls, thankfully none of mine went in (this time!).
Greens were super quick, fairways are lush and bunkers are surprisingly sandy.
If you get the chance, go play - wait for Lee to post a game and get in there!

Living on its previous reputation

Turned up to play on a Sunday afternoon, and the first noticeable thing is that it is no longer part of the Marriott group. That should have told us all something.
The Arden -
Considering the atrocious weather the UK has had this winter (and last autumn), it is not surprising there were no buggies permitted. That said, the courses are not in any condition. We played the 'championship' course on day one. I can state quite categorically, that it is no longer the course that I played around 12 years ago. The whole course is overgrown to some extent. Much of that could be put down to weather conditions, but not all of it. Tee boxes are OK, but fluffy. Fairways were, again fluffy, but at least with pick and place, a chance to practice off the deck with a driver, but they are very wet, what was required were areas marked as GUR. The greens were the best part of the course, but again lack of care leaves them sub par. I will give it 3.5 out of 5.
The Aylesford -
Again no buggies and fairways that actually should have been mostly GUR. This second day had rain, but the only reason the greens started puddling was that they were so waterlogged already. The rough is so poor because of the lack of care (bad weather to a degree) and very tufty, so no fun if you go in it. It was good to see the green keepers out on manoeuvres whilst we were out there, fairways were getting a good cutting - just a pity it was after our group had played them. I can only give this course 2 out of 5.

In summary, Forest of Arden need to up their game, not live on their previous reputation, which is rapidly disappearing. Would I go back? Possibly, but only after a dry spell. This is not a course that handles a lot of rain well.

Busy!!

This course is no longer the three nines it was. They have acquired a little more land and developed into a pair of 18 hole courses.
Olympos is alongside of the sea and canal. It is very new and will need to bed in for a couple more years. BUT, beware, there are hotel guests that like to wander around the pathways, not even dreaming they are in danger from golf balls. And if you are unlucky enough to play a busy day, it can be slow, and due to the up and down layout, YOU will be in the firing line!
Aspendos is the old forest course, much more developed, but as with both, shortish. But it is more enjoyable (with less chance of errant golf balls).

Tree lined - was warned that I should leave the driver at home as it was a tight tree lined course. To be honest was not looking forward to round that much....

....glad I took the driver, and yes, it is a tight(ish) course, and well worth a visit. It's a members club and for the resources they have it's a lovely place to visit. Give it a go if you get the chance.

Two excellent courses - but.....

Two great courses. The Earls is the tougher of them as it is tighter. The Kings is more forgiving, as long as you stay away from the water.

All in all they are in excellent condition and play well, but -

Why oh, why is there such a lack of direction and marking of what the tee is when you get to it. There are some signs that direct you to the next tee, but when you actually get there, there are distance discs in the ground, but no signs stating what the hole number is, without a DMD, you would be forgiven on the odd occasion for perhaps playing the wrong hole!

That's the gripe out of the way - now for the important bit, 'would you play it again' - absolutely, the Kings most definitely (played today in drizzle in a buggy and loved it), and the Earls would be better in a buggy.

Adequate resort course

The course can only be described as adequate. Generally, the course is pretty reasonable, but is tatty. Many areas on fairways are in need of repair, but it seems the quick fix is to throw some sand (not even seeded) down. Bunkers are in an ok state, and unlike many UK ones, raked. Tee boxes are not 'shuffled' enough, as they need to be allowed to recover from the constant use. The greens are in fairly reasonable repair, and do not suffer the other UK embarrassment of unrepaired pitch marks.

All in all, if you could play at the 45 Euro rate we got on our off-plan day, it is a decent price, any higher and I would feel cheated.

Revisited - very much improved.

Hadn't played here for a while. Now under new management and a large injection of cash, the course is starting to be what the previous owners could have made it!
The whole course is in much better condition than previously was. As soon as the damage caused by the epic rain of the past few months has dried out, you are looking at a great course. Will probably be back soon should a game be posted (and schedule allows!).
The bunkers I visited were not too bad to play out of. There are many that are GUR at present - more of that rain - Fairways are needing a haircut, but again, that rain is holding back some work. And it looks as though the greenkeepers have a great deal of fun looking after the greens and making them very slick.

All in all, they have a great package - plenty of thumbs up.

OK, I've glanced through the comments previously posted to get a flavour of what it SHOULD be. Now let's tell it how it was -

April 2023, neither course should be open. The Old Course was like a swamp, that said, it is an interesting course and is probably as quoted by others worth the play. The Woosnam, just 24 hours later had improved, but was still exceptionally boggy. Buggies were not permitted on the Old, but were on the Woosnam (needed for the longer walk, but could only be used on the paths (when will other clubs learn this and put paths in?)

Due to the conditions, the green staff are not cutting any of the grass as you would hope to expect - if they did, I'm sure there would be a tow truck forever there pulling them out. Some of the greens on the Old were that bad as to 'ripple' when the club head was dropped a few inches on to them. The majority of the bunkers were GUR on both courses, but those that were not had (mostly) grainy sand, which was a pleasure to play out of. Thankfully as a group, we played pick and place everywhere (except hazards) else we would have been hitting true mud balls all weekend. Greens on the Old were akin to playing 'Velcro golf', whereas the Woosnam were most definitely built to a better spec and were more enjoyable to play on.

If you want individual hole critic, read Michael Hanley's review, what I will say, that the courses, though in appalling condition are ones that I would like to play again, but never in the state they are at present.

A word on the hotel - rooms are good, food is good and prices are quite reasonable. What I find astonishing is that due to our first time of 9am on day 2, a couple of us breakfasted, then settled the bill, checked out loaded the buggy and thought we'd go back in for a coffee. The bars are all closed at this time, and the only thing open is the pro shop with the usual cold drinks. So off we go to the restaurant to get a coffee to be greeted by 'well once you leave the restaurant, there is not coming back in' - well, I'm not expecting a sit down second breakfast just a cup of coffee.... the server did in fact get a jug of coffee, but was not happy about it! A little staff training might be helpful here, I think!

Overall, impressions of the two-day break were that if the weather had been good to us over the past couple of weeks, it would have been very good, but because the course should really have been closed, it needs down grading quite a lot. Hope they learn a little from the probable negative reactions.

Resort course

Played this course three times in March and even with the exceptionally heavy rain overnight, the course played well. All areas of the course are in good condition.
Since my last visit, they have taken out a lot of trees and 'thorny' vegetation making it less of a problem if slightly offline.
It is a reasonable resort course, not the best in the area, but much better than many we all play here in the UK. The clubhouse at present is a building site, but is due to re-open sometime this summer, but at present you get directed to the Lagoon restaurant prior to 6pm.

It's well worth a play if you visit Belek.

Superb Links course

What a course - designed by Perry Dye, if you go to Turkiiye, make sure you play it. It will be a 40-minute journey, but it is well worth it.

It is a real Links course, only finding water on the 9th and 10th (need a reservoir somewhere!). The whole course is good, tee through green. They've had their problems in the past but it is good to play there again. Greens are true, fairways are in good nick and the tees (all 5 on each hole) are well maintained.

Take cash for the bar as they probably can't swipe your card, but DO GO!!

Samanah Country Club

Niklaus reigns supreme

This course has evidently hosted the Morrocan Open - and so it should.

It is not classed as the best in Marrakech, but of the 5 we played over the week, it was great to have this one as the final days golf. Jack Niklaus' company have built a stunning track that does not disappoint - but you do need a buggy (standard American course design I suppose). If you go as a mixed group, the first person to complain about the shorter Ladies course, should be made to buy the beers and the second to buy the rest of the beers for the holiday!! Yes, the Ladies get some advantages, but it is not an easy course - slope runs from 134 for the girls to 145 for the 'tips' players. As a group we would have been happy to play this one more than once, and even with the copious amounts of water and waste areas, we'd be up for it. Greens run true, fairways are good, bunkers are good and the whole course is a definite 5*.

Impressive arrival

Rock up to the course and the initial view is very impressive. The staff are helpful and friendly. The course is wide open and should cause no ball losing problems. A buggy is a necessity as, along with the heat it is tough going - lots of walks from green to tee. Very much a desert course as there is virtually no water to worry about. We played in around 4 hours 15 minutes and had an enjoyable drink in the bar - what is it with lack of draught beer?? Good day out at a decent track.

The Royal Marrakech Golf Club

THE course in Marrakech?.....almost!

This parkland course is supposed to be the best in town, it may have been, not now though. It is a very 'British' style course, almost as though the turf has been ripped out of the home counties and transported there. Mature trees surround the fairways, with a little water around and plenty of sand to trap you. The greens need TLC, but do run true.

The clubhouse appears to be the place to wine and dine, unfortunately, we only got to look at it when using the loos - but the food looked fantastic and many were using it (make sure you book!).

Well, millionaires golf has nothing on our experience here.

Turned up for our tee time with 30 minutes to spare, and off we go straight away. Only coffee was a machine in the 'pro shop'. Appears that there has been a lot of scarifying and slitting and seeding going on of late.

The course is 'OK', but does really look as though the place has been rescued from the creditors by a new company - if not, expect it to be closed should you venture there. We saw just two other groups on the course beside our three, three balls. All the of the course is in a playable state, but it has a 'newness', much as seen last at the Culinan in Turkey which was a refurbished course.

Play it if you can, but it's in no way memorable.

Welcome to Marrakech!

Overall, the course is a good welcome to golf in Marrakech. Needs a little more TLC, but all in all a good test of golf. Buggies and pull trolleys available - no electrics. Staff are friendly, but the club house is (at this time) not running at full steam. Another place in Marrakech that doesn't keep the bar stocked for British golfers!

I'd play again if ever in that area.

I played here on a tri-club match (Redbourn, Aldwickbury & Burhill) and there is very little I can add to the comments of the two preceding reviews.

My membership allows a free round every year, so my VFM score is a little out! But it is a stunning course (old) and was in spectacular condition, even if they had been scarifying the fairways that morning.

If you can find a friend who is a member, go play, you will not be disappointed.

An absolute gem.

Well, would you really expect to find a LINKS course in Essex, near Rainham - yes, the Thames is close, but a links?
Yes, a links course most emphatically, and a damned enjoyable one as well. And cannot be that bad as we saw lady members out playing.

OK, it does look a little uninspiring on arrival, but they are still spending money on it, increasing the bricked carparking area, adding a third 9. But the clubhouse is no more than 6 years old and in excellent condition (it is a gym as well).

We arrived and before teeing off (wimping out of the squall that was blowing through) we had tea and coffee in the bar upstairs. Tea, coffee and a bacon roll just £8. Reception is very welcoming and were happy to reset our tee time by 20 minutes. That is the thing with this club, they are a private entity and members are gym and golf members. Just look at booking a round and you will be forgiven for thinking there must be something wrong when you see the number of available tee times.

So, off we trot to the starter, and he was very helpful and chatty. He warned us that you need to stay 'online' or your ball count is liable to rise. That would be because of the rough and gorse that litters the sides of most fairways.

The whole course is being cared for (maybe a small problem with some sprinklers, but that is nit-picking). Neither the tee boxes or fairways were 'fluffy' and the greens run true. One bunker found in our game was a little solid, but that seems to be the problem on most courses at present (am told that there is a shortage of bunker sand!?!?). A few of the greens look uncared for, but they are not, I think it is just the grass patterns. As well as running true, they are quite quick. Also, they are not all flat as billiard tables with plenty of undulations. And the slope you think is there, is probably from the other direction.

There will be no hesitation in returning to this gem of a golf course, and if Ahern Waste Management keep looking after it the way they are, many more people will find this gem.

I can only agree with the good points laid out by others below - quirky, but worthwhile to visit.

I can only add, that this is no longer a 'members club' as they were on the verge of closing - losing money hand over fist. It is now part of the Get Golfing group and they are spending money on it. Try the restaurant out, but not on a Monday!

VFM - I was playing a club match, so prices were not on my list.

Middle of no'Ware', but worth the hunt!

Had not played Whitehill for many years, and it was better than memory served.
The condition of the course is really good, no point picking any part out, but will say the greens are quicker than you may be used to - and the members think they are slow at present!
Played the course 'backwards' and found that the second nine (my first) is a little tougher. My playing partner had a few little problems as being a lefty (yep, one of them ??) had a few shots that didn't come back in bounds after his standard 'banana shot' got sucked into OOB.
If you get the chance, go play it. Be warned, mobiles find it a bit of a dead zone, so download the map to your device beforehand, or hope you find someone to direct you!

Needing some TLC

Played twice in a week and was hoping the greens got a bit quicker, but was wrong - BUT, there is a reason - they are making sure the greens stand up to traffic. It is just a little annoying as most places are now running faster. That said, they are in very good condition generally as they are hard enough to a) let your ball run through if it lands on them and b) are good enough to 'repel' the dreaded craters we call pitch marks! 'Old holes' need repairing with more than sand as it takes too long to heal.
Bunkers are in need of care from the ground staff, members and players as they are not being raked (if there is a rake in it). Fairways are fairly divot free, but tee boxes need tidying up.
Good to see they are ensuring a hard path round the course; I'd assume that this will allow buggies all year (many better clubs could learn this lesson), but can they please fill in all the holes - noticed one and stumbled, then getting back in the buggy stumbled in it again.

But, for the price, the course is good value, and I would think that the course will get the TLC as more income comes in. Hope so, as Crown who were in charge before did their usual sucking of cash from the business then cast it off for someone else to pick up the pieces - hope it works for the folk now running it.

Resort course

A pair of parkland courses, one with a lot more water!

More than a dozen year since my last visit, thankfully this time was warmer than 6 degrees and rain! Both courses are in relatively good condition, considering we have just come out of one of the wettest winters, and the probability that they have reduced the green keeping staff over the past 2 years 'due to covid'. The tee boxes showed that they are quite busy, but generally ok for use. Fairways, well, they are fairways and, in this case, not too full of divot marks, so pretty reasonable. The greens are in quite good condition and are faster that I was used to (until today!) at Redbourn. Bunkers had some of that strange stuff, not always found on a golf course - sand.

All in all, we had a good couple of days in some lovely surroundings - could have done with less wind (but this is the Fens) and a little more warmth (April??). If you are thinking of a UK golf break, you will probably be happy with a couple of days here, then move on to somewhere else.

The attached hotel was a De Vere until they went bust (this hotel was the home of 'The Sunday Driver deal'). Is now part of the Q Hotels group. The staff are very friendly and will do the best they can. We turned up on the Sunday and the bacon rolls in our deal were great. Then onto the evening meal, and there was no complaint (our deal included a half bottle of wine each and I am told it was 'ok'). Breakfast was really good and the after-round ham egg and chips was better than many golf clubs will supply (real gammon steak).

The question that everyone needs to answer at the end of a review is - Would you go back? - Yes, should we (or someone else) have a golf weekend I'd be happy to return.

The Sunday driver deal we had was £140 (included the bacon roll and the after-golf meal and single room occupancy)- advertised price is from £99.

Cracking course

Stocks is tucked away between Ashridge GC and Tring town. Not the easiest place in the world to get to, but it is worth the visit. It has been open since the mid-nineties and with the generosity of the owner, they have a very welcoming club house and a superb golf course.

I will hopefully visit again in the next few months (providing we get drawn against them again) - but would happily return if there was a game posted.

The whole course is well maintained, and thankfully the deep rough has been chopped down ready for the spring growth to cause problems for wayward golfers again. Due to the cut back of the rough, it makes it appear to very open as the trees are still growing and therefore fill less space than a long-established course. Greens are quite fast, but are true - guess the members tend to look after repair of pitch marks unlike too many other courses. Bunkers are well maintained and have real sand in them (makes a change).

If you get the chance, go play. If it was on my doorstep, I'd seriously look at a membership, but 40 minute drive (if you are lucky) is too much. Looking at their web site, it seems visitors are not 'looked for', so need to know someone maybe?

This IS the home of the Turkish Airlines Open, and it deserves to be.

I played whilst most definitely feeling 'under the weather, and had to start from the 10th tee, to make things even more disruptive! Where do I start?

Well, the tee boxes are the same as the rest of the course - in superb condition.

I cannot really complain about any part of the course but will complain about the bunkers, just for something to be negative over - no rakes (yes, I know - COVID). Special mention to the greens - they are true and difficult. Full marks to Tyrell Hatton for being the current champion, he did earn his money and I do not envy his playing off the tips of the black tees!

The question we all have to ask is 'would I play again' - the answer is, 'in a heartbeat', but the proviso would be that it MUST be a good day (no rain at all). I paid 110 Euros for my round - this included breakfast, golf and lunch -including all drinks, so a really good deal (and transfer bus).
Peak rates are in excess of 160 Euros for the same deal (Xmas day is quiet for some reason - headaches?) and I am guessing that the price will probably increase somewhat during the next few months (the exchange rate is rapidly devaluing the Turkish Lira on a daily basis).

I am due back in a few weeks, and if I can get a tee time, will more than likely play it again.

Food is, unlike most hotels (attached to the Maxx Royal), hot and very good, choice is almost standard golf club fare, but is worth the visit.

If you do play, get a buggy - extra 20 euros each person!

Only 4600 yards....ONLY, yeah really!!

The course may be short, but you need to think like a mountain goat. Expect a workout, and don't think it's simple.
This was my second round there with James and I'm sure that I will return.

Greens are pretty quick, fairways are not bad considering the rain of late, as with many courses, the bunkers are not great and the tees are in reasonable condition.

James has said it, I'll back him up - GO PLAY IT!

Very tired

El Rompido was originally one course - the South - and they added the North course 15 years or so ago.
Understandably there has been a lower level of investment over the past 18 months due to Spain being in a near permanent state of Lockdown, but....
There is lower investment and there is no investment, and it would appear that the courses at el Rompido have suffered from the latter, especially the North course.
I'd have to say that there are many of municipal courses around the UK that are in a better state than these two. (23/24 September there was a major thunderstorm - I was there - and it wiped out a course the other side of Huelva and I presume this is the cause of the damage here) The bunkers were wiped out by the storm, but there has been very little work carried out to repair the damage - hopefully the attempt that they are making to put drainage into the bunkers will be completed by next season, but it does appear to be a case on 'tomorrow'.
Tee boxes have, in many instances (especially the ladies), a 'hump' in them so the ball is above or below your feet before you've started a hole. Bunkers on the South ok(ish) the North course see above. Greens are damaged, more so on the North than the South. The greenkeepers have not seemed to work out that you don't put the hole on a slope!
Overall, I must say I was very disappointed with the courses, having been told it was a good course, especially so that SOLO's run their Festival week there annually and Tarleton also use it for Festivals - neither of which will have me joining them.
The Clubhouse is OK, but again very tired - careful walking through the shop as the flooring has 'hills and troughs' in the wooden floor. But the food and drink operation, other than being slow, is pretty reasonable.

The answer to 'Would you go back' is a definite NO - unless there are some really good write-ups in the future.

(It is attached to the Precise Hotel, which again is a little tired and a number of the staff need to learn some customer care...not act like it's a chore to help you)

This is my second visit. Last time it was good, this time it is in almost peak condition - just ready for the Club Championship.

The tees are immaculate. The fairways... I'd like to have a turf making machine as I could do with grass like that at home!(As good as carpet) Bunkers are really well sanded and looked after. The greens were running at 10.5 on the stimp, then it turned a little breezy - wow! Would say that as with most courses, players need to learn what a pitchmark repairer is.

Be good to play this course more regularly, but it's a long way from Luton!

I'd like an invite to next year's Open please!

Mill Green Golf Club

Revisited

Have not played Mill Green for at least 10 years, and it does not disappoint! They have switched the nines around - start on what used to be the 10th. Added a little extra water (stagnant though!) on the 7th. There are a few more and a few less bunkers.

The course is in very good condition - you can see money is being spent on it (gone are the penny pinching days of Crown). There are a few new bunkers around the course and a goodly number that are decommissioned. Nice to see that the bunkers are getting a sub base of crushed foam then overlaid with (very) fine sand.When they have finished the bunker updating, this course will be a cracker.
The greens are running fast and true. Tee boxes are in relatively good condition - a little lacking in water, but that is another job that appears to be in hand. Good to see someone out in a buggy selling cold drinks in the hot weather. And it was good to get an apology that it took us 4hr 15 for a round - because of the members comp off earlier. We played quite comfortably on our round and only got caught on the 18th - even then we were sat getting drinks before those folks walked past.

All in all a good day out at a well run club. Will probably post more games here.

Definitely a better experience than the last visit. Tee through green the course is in good condition. Usual problem with bunkers (covid!).

Clubhouse is warm and friendly, but the staff could do with a kick to get around the customers quicker. Food was excellent (Ham, egg and chips) Corona overpriced at £4.50 per bottle.

All in all worth the (wet) visit!

Overall the course is looking pretty good. Bunkers are suffering from the wind and rain of late - and below the 'sand' is rubberized sheet or artificial turf! Ever seen a ball bounce high from a bunker?

Needs a 'bit'

All in all we had a good day out, but there are a few points that need to be addressed:

Tee boxes are in very poor condition (still got lockdown hairdo's) fairways are also in need of a trim, but that could be the day of the week, greens are fluffy and a couple are like walking on a sponge, and bunkers are in need of TLC - yes I know we have restrictions, but surely a good raking by the green staff is not difficult.

I am sure that when they get over probably having had no staff working over lockdown, the course will improve, but as it stands they definitely are missing out on customer care.

I'm sure I will return, but I am not in a hurry to do so.

Short and tight

Another return to Sunbury. Not the longest course in the world, but you need to be careful to stay in play. As an example - the 6th is SI1, stay away from the left as it's an internal OOB, and stay away from the right as there is a large expanse of water! Watch where you put the ball or else you will find yourself in troubles.
I'd not say I would rush to play the course, but I'd not turn the chance of a game down.
Bacon roll was good, as was the 'frothy' coffee!

Post lockdown, it was okay.

1st of day back out after lockdown, the course was in fair condition. Rough, being quite damp, was making ball hunting tricky. Greens had been hollow tined, so not running quite as true. Overall not too much to complain about, and after 4 weeks of lockdown, I think most of us would play in a poorly ploughed field! Next time there's a game up and I'm free, I'll be happy to play.

Clubhouse was open serving all sorts, and was doing a fair trade.

Not the Lower

Second visit in the past few weeks. Upper course is OK, but the lower course is not as good. 1st tee needs a complete re-turf - you'd think that people have been teeing of with a shovel. 1st green had been cut, but had the cuttings left in lines.

The course is not bad, just needs someone to 'care' for it, because it is being kept in play, but not very well. Obviously the owner is milking the course at present as there is bound to be a drop off in players as we go forward, but I would guess that it may well come back and bite them.

If you want to play it, Lower is a fair test and exceptionally up and down. The Upper is the easier course and not used as much (not on a Monday morning anyway).

Worth the drive

This course is just a short three and a half hour drive from home.....and was well worth the visit.
The views are stunning from the off. Just remember you are sharing the golf course with a lot of sheep, who are probably there for the views to!
Up and down with plenty of gorse and bracken to lose balls in, but as long as you stay on the short stuff your game will be fine (pick and place on fairways even in September - sheep poo!)
What was not to like, other than a quick squall the weather was great, not like the expected Welsh rain(??).
All told with social distancing, the bar was welcoming and the bacon baguette was superb.

If you are in the area and have time to spare, book yourself a game - you'll not be upset!

More than you may expect

This is the first time back for over ten years and it does not disappoint.

As a 9 hole you may think it has little to offer, but you'd be wrong. About half the holes use the same tee boxes twice, but the other half change you perspective of the course. The 1st/10th just need a driver and wedge, but don't overshoot, you'll get tree trouble. 2/11 are par 5's with OOB all up the right and a ditch 120 back from the green. 3/12 - just a mild dog leg to the right with OOB on the right - but you do need to really mishit it that far. The 4th/13th are next to an OOB on your left - don't be tempted to try cutting the corner unless you can get the height - there is also a ditch to worry about. Onto the 5th/14th - it's a simple par 4....except for the pond at 200 yards. Now comes the downhill dog leg right 6th - last time I played here, clearing the trees was quite possible, but now they've grown a bit. And why didn't I do 15 at the same time? Because the tee is somewhat farther back, and other than having to go over the previous green, and there being a narrow gap through the trees, and those other trees that have grown a bit - well it's a simple SI 1 par 4!

Just three holes of both nines left - time for the oxygen tanks! 7/16 are par 3's to different green's almost adjacent to each other that are both nearly at the top of Everest.(Well it feels like climbing Everest!) Of course once up there you now need to play back down (then up) across the OOB field blindly to have a pop at the raised green in regulation - more oxygen! Finally 9/18, which is just a 140 yard par 3, simple, but for the four bunkers!

Overall the quality of the course can't be faulted. Tee boxes are being used properly by continual re positioning the markers, and they have winter tees that accept tees. Fairways were a little fluffy, but are well kept. The greens are in very good condition, true but not overly fast. All bar three of the bunkers were well raked with sand, yes sand, in them (unlike many around the country that sprinkle a little sand once or twice a year) Those three were unraked because of me!!

All the members met on the day were friendly and spoke to us. The steward was helpful, clubhouse is dated but welcoming. Only drawback was no kitchen in action on the visit.

Yes do like this track. If I was a resident on the Island (never again) this is probably the course I'd join.

A gem

In between Hendon, North Finchley and Mill Hill, this is a little gem. Having read Brigitte and Mr Flynn's reviews, there is very little to add (golf wise).

The club house is now a little run down with 'closed' signs around the entrance side - I'm guessing this is due in part to the bloody virus. But the good news is that you can get a beer or coffee after the round in the bar.

It's definitely worth a visit. (Even with the present situation, this course is in pretty good nick, better than many)

OK, but......

I'd have to agree with what Olly has said about the course EXCEPT the first paragraph.

The young guy taking payments in the morning was really friendly and helpful, but the older fella who was on at the end of our round needs a major lesson in customer care. Only way to get a coffee (we found out) is to stand at the window in the pouring rain whilst he sorts them out for you - that was after as good as being told to get out of the shop, as no one is allowed in there. Covid-19 has effected the way we all have to interact, but that level is ridiculous.

Go for the golf, don't go for the sparkling personalities!!

Big downhill slide

Played a few times over the last three years, yesterday will probably be the last time.
Where to start? Clubhouse - yes it is post Covid-19, but a welcome that says 'please use me' instead of just 'hi, what's your tee time' would be good.
Tee boxes have seen better days - surely it's not difficult to move them daily? Fairways are OK, but a haircut more than once a week might help. Greens lots of half dead/bare areas, and bobbly as hell! Half the holes set up for Covid with a 'disc' the rest missing, and going by the over spill of green into the holes, I'd guess the pin has not been moved for a couple of weeks.
Good point! The bunkers are possibly the best I've seen since coming back to golf, but that doesn't make up for the rest.
Clubhouse closed the bar at 6pm, I assume that was the time the toilets were closed.
Cist to play at 16:20 was £20, yes in post Covid-19 times that is reasonable, but for the quality of this course, it's double what it should be.

If, and that's a big if, this club is still open next year, I may venture back, but probably not.

I feel sorry for the members club that uses this course, at the rate it is going, all they will have is a clubhouse (not the 'clubhouse' you pay at).

Return!

Yes, a return to Cobtree was well worth it! A firmer outing made for a better experience. Good company before, during and after the round definitely is a boon.

All in all the course quality is not bad considering that the pandemic is stopping extra work being carried out and, as an example, bunkers being sub par. Breakfast was good and staff are making the most of what they can do.

'Not The TSG Open' was a good day out, thanks to Mark for organising.

Walking workout!

Have a read through the other reviews and you have all the information you need.

Played on a damp day in July and had a really nice day out. Didn't actually use the clubhouse, but from what I saw it was good. The course was was in good condition, and exceptionally 'green' - something to do with summer being a dampish at present!

You will get a good cardio workout at Pinner due to the use of the Hill it's on, so be prepared for ups'n'downs.... And at the top of the hill take a good look out over London - the Gherkin, the Shard and Canary Wharf are visible amongst others. So even if the golf is a little sub par, you will be in the same class as Mark Twain and have the views to remember!

Still Improving

After the previous owners basically let the courses slide badly, their is light at the end of the tunnel!

Now known as Cainhoe Wood, the courses have been renamed 'Manor' and 'Castle'(which is a mound in on the way to Clophill).

The new owners are spending some cash on the courses. The tee boxes are in better condition, fairways are grassier and the greens are better than before, if fluffy. Obviously they picked the wrong time to takeover, but, they are trying. Only one course is open to all, whilst the Castle course is 'work in progress' and until completed, will allow members only.

18 holes took 3h 35m, which is not bad, but it could have been better but for the prima donna, who had to play with his range finder at every opportunity (and coaching his mate).

Going to give it another go later in the summer, but looking good so far.

(Bar and snacks are open, as a one at a time takeaway)

Unfair to rely on rating the course in present times as all is shut except playing/practice areas. That said, I am sure like most other courses they have worked with reduced green staff during the lockdown, so for that, it's in pretty reasonable condition. The good weather during the period will have helped AND hindered maintenance - it clearly needs a damned good watering. But the greens are reasonable and tee boxes are OK, fairways need a tidy up, but should not complain.

6+ years on

Well 6+ years on, the course is still in the improving category. Fairways are not as sparse, tee boxes are in relatively good nick. Bunkers - someone on the green staff is starting to understand them and is doing away with the low 'putt out lips' and making the members work for a par!
Practice facilities now consist of a small putting green as the old driving range has been mothballed.
The clubhouse has a very active clientele.

Let's just hope that the present management gets an extension to their lease terms in a couple of years.

Playing at what the end of what may be one of the wettest early Autumns in memory, the course is actually better than some.

Tender loving care is not something that any Council run golf course will normally get, but generally this one appears to have had it, but due to weather, maybe the ground staff are not using their equipment very often! The whole course is in need of a 'haircut' but it needs to dry out a little first.

Generally speaking the course is playing quite well. Being that much shorter it is no surprise that high stableford scores are available. And a SSS of 68 is a little out, any pro is going to eat this course alive!

A return trip may well be on the cards, but only after a dry spell.

Well, having looked at the previous reviews, there was some good to look forward to and a lot not to be looking for.

Well, in a nutshell:
The clubhouse is very tired.
The course is poorly looked after.
Bunkers unraked (apparently used as a fox playground in many).
Fairways almost the same length as the semi.
Greens, possibly the best part of the course.
Tees are scruffy.
Staff in the clubhouse are friendly, but NO hot food ALL weekend.

Would I return? No, there are a lot of other courses that have a lot better facilities and don't call it a 'Championship Course'

Good resort course

The courses are attached to the Islantilla Resort which will probably mean that in the next 6 months the prices are going to take an upward hike as it has just been purchased by Hilton and is in for a refurbishment.

But, the golf course... As with many throughout Spain, don't forget that whatever club you need, take an extra one!

There are three nines here, Blue, Yellow and Green. The Green is the tougher 9 (19-27), the Yellow maybe just the easiest. The course is in need of a refurb itself - cart paths are broken and some, you even feel you may fall out of the buggy! There is definitely a need for the sprinklers to get an overhaul as many only point one way and the ensueing 'bog' that you need to play from or drive through is a good pointer as to why we played pick and place all week. The parts of the fairway that were not suffering from overwatering are in very good condition, as are the fairways.

The greens are very furry, but this could be because there was an enormous storm on arrival and overnight before our first game, meaning they were letting them recover..... but I would not put money on it being the case. They did run fairly true and also had a bonus of being very receptive.

Bunkers had something many UK courses don't - sand!

I didn't use the driving range, but all seemed to be happy with it - included a practice bunker and extra putting green to complement the small one by the clubhouse.

The clubhouse is very friendly and welcoming. Booze is plentiful and the food is really good (100% better than the hotel at present).

Is a return trip on the cards? Maybe if the company that I went with gets favourable rates and friends decide to go again next year.

The course in itself is quite an open parkland setting, but does not overly 'ring my bell'. For the price I would have expected more, but understand that this is the going rate for a course of this standard in the area, as unlike Essex you are not able to cross the county by stepping on golf courses!

That being said, the course is in excellent condition, apart from the usual dried out fairways (as is everywhere). The greens are in good nick, some unrepaired pitch marks, but that is down to stay and play guests.

Played on a special price voucher so feel a little mean knocking the prices, but the headline rate is a little to much for the course. Would play again, but only on a deal.

Played on a weekday and it was quite busy. Both members and visitors out.
The course in itself is pretty well maintained, all is looked after well and for a change, it is a course that has the bunkers well raked! Greens were quite fast and after 17 holes I think we'd got there measure ;).

Reading other reviews, I'd have to agree this is a very samey course, nothing really stands out, BUT yes I do remember the beast of a 600yd par 5, and the view of the 'Castle' was impressive. I remember a few of the holes, but not what order they were in.

And yes I think it will deserve a revisit sometime soon.

Fair parkland track

Set right next door to the Northamptonshire GC, you'd be forgiven thinking its the poor relation. Maybe it is, but business seems to be pretty good as there is definitely money being spent there.
Tee boxes through to greens are in pretty good shape. Fairways seem to have a good spring to them, don't expect all you shots to run. Greens are deceptive, what you may think is an uphill is slightly down and vice versa. Bunkers suffer from the perennial lazy golfer who can't be bothered to rake, but is the first to complain that they are unraked. Make sure you have a strike saver or pictures on the phone as there are one or two holes that have hidden problems.

This was my 5th visit over the last couple of years and it will not be the last. Just a pity its so far out of the 'normal' area. But go play if you have the chance. £20 on Monday for 18 and small lunch after 12noon.

Actually, quite a gem!

Make sure your sat-nav is working, else you'll never find it! This course is in deepest Northamptonshire, but beware there are virtually no signs directing you there.

The entrance 'drive' is not the most welcoming, but that's probably down to farm vehicles using it. And as you approach the property you will glimpse the 5th green, at which point you will be forgiven for thinking 'what have I let myself in for', as it appears a touch scabby! The attached hotel appears to have seen better days and (on my visit) there were virtually no players/guests around.

Please don't let the preamble put you off, get on the course and play it - then make your own mind up, because it is a cracking course and we WILL be returning.

The tee boxes could do with a bit of TLC, but are in better condition than many clubs. The fairways are lush and almost have a carpet like feel on them (if you play on them of course). Bunkers have the perennial problem of inconsiderate players not raking them, but do have that elusive ingredient - SAND. And the greens - they run true, but some are quick, some are slow...but another player in your group will tell you the opposite (or is that because its the end of the day and one way is quick the other way is slow?)

You are going to get a real workout on this course - up, down, up, down...And keep to the correct side of the fairway as there are slopes you cannot see - read the stroke saver or, at least, the description on the teem sign.

The three of us that played will return, but never on (so far) the hottest day of the year!

Hilly parkland

Very friendly on arrival, starter was very chatty. The fairways, like many needs another year to recover from last years spectacular summer. Greens are in reasonable condition and the surrounding bunkers have more sand than their sister course in Redbourn.

Having played Twisted Stone recently, I was expecting something similar, but better maintained. Wrong! This course may be in the same vicinity, but as different as chalk and cheese. This course is well maintained, busier and more friendly. It also has a built-in cardiac workout, especially when you get to the 17th.

All in all, I would revisit if in the area (especially with the Burhill discount)

Not a bad course. Better than some, but lagging behind most of the courses in the area.

BUT for the money, this is almost a little gem! Played at noon on a weekday for just a tenner - yes only £10 - and with good company, it's well worth it.

The greens are a little slow in places (but not when the ball is flying onto them!), they are not perfect. The fairways are a little in need of a shave (not overly so) and the tee boxes are in relatively good condition. There may be a need of a few more rakes for the bunkers, and people may need to remember (like most clubs) how to use the rake!

The clubhouse is quite tiny, but there are snacks and drinks available.

Yes, I'm sure that I will visit again - especially if the £10 lunchtime rate is going to be available.

It may be an idea if they get the online booking working properly, as I booked had it shown on my phone but the guy on reception could only find a booking for 'Jim' as a single player....technolgy SHOULD be a wonderful thing!

Good parkland

Played here around 10 years ago and could remember nothing other than the clubhouse. All the tee boxes are in excellent condition as are the fairways and bunkers. Greens are true, if you can work them out! Unlike most courses today the under tree growth has been allowed to grow, but the reason for this is the landing everywhere pretty much all over the course is wide enough that to be in the trees is your hard luck.
Members were pretty friendly and the staff were all helpful.
Would I play again? Yes just bought another Groupon for play later in the summer.

Excellent for a municipal

Has been a few years since my last visit and it has got better. Never was bad before, but there appears to be more care being put in. Tee boxes evidently do put Luton Hoo to shame at twice the price and across the road. Fairways are well maintained, bunkers have real sand in them(!) but have bunnies digging them up. Greens are in fantastic condition and are running very true.

Main drawback with the course will arrive around six weeks time when the schools break up and the little oiks come out to play, but if you get up early enough they should be no problem.

The club house only cooks until 2pm and shut around 7pm.

All in all a nice round at a good price on a well maintained course.

BUT - the course is very much the same/similar to so many others. It has no real features that make it stand out.

Would I play it again? Yes, but would not rush back as there are many more interesting courses out there that I will rush back to.

A hidden diamond

Having just perused Brigitte's review, there is very little to add. Tees - good, fairways- fairly wide and good condition, greens - good condition and true and bikers have an almost perfect amount of sand. The clubhouse is warm (!) and inviting and friendly throughout.

Brigitte left out that the owner is an ex pro, who played a season on tour and had his two mates open the course..... Who, you may ask? Poults and Rosie!

Well worth further visits and am due back in a couple of weeks.

Well worth a visit

Having heard much about this course from several people, it has been on my 'must play' list. And it did not let me down.

Very linksy feel, and with the conditions, the ball does not want to stop.

Condition of the course was what you would expect for the time of year, just short of perfect...captain's day and competitions through the summer will play at the peak this year. Tees and fairways are in good nick, bunkers have sand(!) in them and greens are quick.

All staff are friendly and helpful on and off the course.

Definitely one for a revisit.

A game of three nines

This time played The River and The Mediterranean 9's and they are a lot better than I remember when it was called the Tat Golf Club.

Overall it is a pretty reasonable parkland, 1st 9, and a linksy into parkland 2nd 9.

The course is quite well maintained, but is not quite as good as some of the other local courses, BUT, that is probably because REGNUM who operate the Carya have not had long enough to bring up to standard.

The whole course is in good enough condition to knock out many golf courses in the UK, which means you should not have any real complaints, but next door is so much better and so much dearer.

There are plenty of bunkers, plenty of water and plenty of rough to keep you on your toes.

If you get the chance, go play it.

The course is a Faherty/Jones collaboration and is stunning.
It is a relatively tight layout, so read the course guide and do as you are advised, but make sure you "smash it down the middle" anyway. Loads of water, ample bunkers, pristine tees and really good, if tough, greens. The rough looks like longish astro turf and the fairways are pretty good, even divots are mainly filled in.
This is not for the faint hearted, but is one to put on the list of you go to Belek.

Excellent value

First time of playing this course and was a little dubious as it is the cheapest in the area, and had not heard of anyone else playing it. This is attached to a Robinsons hotel, but not directly accessible.
Tee boxes were in good condition. The fairways were fringed with a slightly punishing area of semi rough with plenty of trees either side to make you take a little extra care. Greens and approaches looked after. And the bunkers had real sand! so made going in ok for those that play well out of them and awful for those that don't.

Only complaint on the day was having to push the buggy (yes buggy) up the 18th. Make sure you check the charge before and halfway through the round - BUT the buggy boys did see us and came out with a replacement to get back to the clubhouse so full marks in the end.

Back to the cost - advertised rate was 55 euro equating to around £48 which in Belek is superb value, and at that price they can teach many clubs I the UK a thing or two about value for money.

Would I play it again - too right I would.

Buggy required

This course is the other side of the road from Quinta do Vale, so suffers from the same problems - green to tee walks and elevation changes.

Of the two courses this is by far the best, but don't upset Manuel the Caddie Master.

It is quite a tight course, but it helps that mostly it is forgiving enough to return your ball to a place that is playable, if not where you'd want it. Greens were the best of the week, most had a bit of character and made you think about the shot.bunkers and water were in plentiful supply, but bail out areas were there to be used.

Plenty of views for you to look at if the golf goes awry and like at do Vale, you can get a glimpse of Spain across the river.

Another course that is worth a visit again in the future.

Good honest courses

Both Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima share all the facilities adjacent to the Robinson Hotel/Complex. Both courses are in pretty good shape.

De Cima seems to like loads of bunkers and a bit of water and da Ria appears to like plenty of water with a good smattering of bunkers.

Tee boxes through to the greens on both courses are in very good condition and (providing the mowers are used) have plenty of run on the fairway.

The two memorable holes are, firstly on de Cima, the 17th 171 yard par 3 straight over a lake. the wind was blowing the day I played and it required a driver for both players. Secondly the 10th par 4 SI1 - more water at 190 yards from the tee with a pair of mature tree just behind. You need to grip it and rip it, what a cracking hole.

This is quite a tough course, both on ball losses and a definite need for a buggy. Thankfully there are people selling balls around the course, but once the decision is made not to take a buggy, you are stuffed.

There are a few of elevation change during the course of the round, and also more than a few long green to tee trips. Be warned, you need a buggy.

The course in itself is not bad, but as with many in the Algarve, plenty of water and plenty of sand. The tees, fairways, bunkers and greens are all in good condition, especially when you realise that the course is in the hands of the banks.

Good course to play but the buggy is a necessity.

Your starter..

First round of the holiday. Good honest easy going course, nothing to strenuous a little water a fair number of bunkers, but not too many. Fairways are wide enough for most of us to hit a few. The tee boxes are in good condition and the greens are pretty true, if unremarkable.

The 11th is a tad strange with a ditch, with a wall directly behind it just in striking range for most of the fellas, thankfully missed it, but you don't know about it until you get there.

All in all it is not a course that is very memorable, but with good company and decent weather it is a nice course to play.

Its the sort of course you would happily play a couple of times on the holiday.

Good track

Having read recent reviews, I was expecting something exactly opposite to what I found.

Greens were excellent and made us all think a little more, Fairways in good condition, tee boxes pretty well cared for and rough was what it is supposed to be, penal. If you smash a long drive and it keeps going in the rough, change your game plan. And the bunkers, which I had expected to be stony and bare - well they were not the best in the world, but by a wide margin not the worst.

Could have done with another body to ensure the bar was served in a timely fashion, but overall the clubhouse was pretty reasonable (if extortionate).

If the TSG Open is there next year, count me in.

(The only defense against poor reviews would be based on my club this year, which a couple of months ago was atrocious, now is excellent)

First visit here and will probably not be the last. It is a municipal and the staff in the clubhouse are extremely welcoming. Went with a Groupon voucher and they were really helpful regarding the 'after round' bacon roll - food stops at 6pm so nice to see flexibility.

The course is in pretty good condition. Greens on the front nine are big enough to build a house on and flat enough as well, but second nine proved somewhat different, with more undulations and less size.

Another course that ticks the box for a pleasant afternoon in the warmth of summer - especially with a voucher for two rounds and bacon butties for just £16!!

Nice easy 445 yard par 5 to start....yeah! This is quite a tough course 6700 yards off the white tees, and on a blisteringly hot Saturday afternoon it's no picnic.

I'd have to agree with all of Paul's review, especially the bit about taking a buggy. The tees, fairways and greens are in terrific condition. But you can tell the head green-keeper is a sadistic so and so as there are some new really testing bunkers, and the first cut (2 inches) runs out around 6-8 feet from the fairway.

If you want to test your game, try here, but go on a cooler day and use a buggy!

Worth the visit

Played this course several times, this is the dampest it has been, but where isn't at present? Costs a little more than the normal some, but it is worth it for Monday morning millionaires golf.

Tee boxes are in reasonable condition, fairways are a bit muddy, but there has been a drop or two of rain lately and the greens though a touch fluffy are pretty true. The bunkers are ok (have sand!), but need the rabbit scrapings filled in, it's not really acceptable to leave them. Alright for us as we all played pick and place everywhere due to ground conditions

New clubhouse is a treat and the latte's are very nice. A visit in warmer (and drier) weather should be on the cards for later in the year.

Played 19/04 after a weekend of awful weather, following a winter of awful weather, and surprisingly played a relatively mud free round. Plenty to point fingers at, but after the last few months, bunkers with little sand - it's rained, fairways with a lot of divots - it's rained and some softer spots on the greens - it's rained...... we could have had a darned sight worse. Actually, after the green staff aerating the second 9 greens, we were very lucky.

Only gripe would be that they made DJ wait for so long for his baguette!

The home of the Turkish Open in a way - its where they played the first 8 ball invitational just 4 or 5 years ago.

There are two courses on the property, The Sultan and The Pasha. Both are Parkland, both have a fair amount of water, both have their fair share of bunkers to negotiate.

The Pasha is the baby brother and other than to say it is not as testing or of quite the same quality as the Sultan, i will not add further comment as it is about 7 years since my last round (but played at 6.30am when no one else is about, is a treat).

The Sultan is possibly my favourite course in Turkey and most definitely deserved the honour of hosting the first Open. The fairways are fairly wide and very inviting, once the ball has landed from your duffed drive they will roll a fair distance. Best to keep out of the well sanded bunkers as you will have on many occasions the chance of a re-run in another one. There is plenty of water to keep you sharp, but using good course management, there should be no reason to go in there ( a driver will probably get you in on the 9th, be warned).

The greens are quite receptive and are somewhat faster that what we would be used to between October and April, but not too penal. And they are quite true, just trust your eye to do the job.

Yes I will be back for another round, and it will not be so long next time!

Two fair tests

There are two 18 hole courses at the Sueno Golf Resort.

The first is the Dunes, that has many Dunes (grass covered) on the fairways and in the light rough, but each hole is distinct from its neighbour due to the trees and bushes to either side.

The second is the Pines, that has many pine trees lining, and in the odd case on the fairways of each hole, plus many ups and downs.

To be fair both could have their names swapped and the description would still stand for that course.

Both courses are a fair test of the amateur game that with a few rounds under your belt, would start to bring in some higher stableford scores.

The whole course is in very good condition, this can be seen by looking out of the bedroom window at 6.30am and seeing the green staff tending the course. The greens are quite fast, especially to us Brits after a winter of wet slow ones. Bunkers have something we rarely see over here - sand. Fairways have repairing divots, nothing like as bad as we would expect to find on most UK courses at anytime of the year. And of course there are the other hazards that we have seen a lot of falling from the sky this year, but all gathered together in the form of lakes - lots of them!

If after your round is finished you sit on the lakeside platform, between eating, drinking and feeding the carp, you can watch play on both 9's and both 18's and get to count the visits to the water.

These courses are attached to the Sueno Golf Hotel and the Sueno Beach hotel is just 5 minutes walk away. Both are all inclusive, and staying at the Golf, you get to eat at the Beach if you want (DO). Golf hotel is OK but samey, Beach hotel is aimed squarely at the Russians, who because Mr Putin says so are not going at present, so go make hay whilst the sun shines.

Countryside brought to town

Rushmere is a pleasant course tucked away in a residential area of Ipswich. The area is in fact common ground with numerous dog walkers, so watch out for 'presents'. I played on a warm day in September and found that the course whilst not hugely so, was a test of my game. The requirement is to keep the ball relatively straight, else you will be in the trees, heather and worst of all, gorse.

The greens are pretty good, most people repairing their pitch-marks, some not - much the same as everywhere really. Bunkers were well raked with a few doggy prints, with not so fine sand, but that means the sand will remain in the wind. Fairways are not perfect, but it is common land so to be expected. Tee boxes are pretty reasonable.

There is a range to take your own balls on and also a putting/pitching green, none of which were used by me.

Bar staff were friendly and the cost of a bottle was reasonable. Unfortunately this shuts at 5pm, so couldn't try anything else after the game.

If you are up Ipswich way, for £15 on a Monday afternoon, you cannot go wrong.

It's fault? South of London!

I may be biased because of my win, but this is one cracking course! I would be happy to play it on a regular basis, but unfortunately it is the wrong side of London - which was proved by the crawl back home.

The whole course has an air of being well maintained and not just a company cash cow. Tees are good, fairways are good, bunkers (two I went in) were good and greens were true and superbly maintained.

This course holds it's own against many much longer established courses, and other corporate groups should come and look at where they are going wrong.

The practice facilities, driving range and chipping/bunker area are excellent. The putting green is somewhat quirky with some real slopes to contend with - makes you worry about the greens on course, which are nothing like as bad - thankfully!

If there are any negatives it would only be in the costs at the bar - I think they are a little higher than they should be - a bottle of Peroni for £3.60 - what??

All In all, if you asked me to play again, as long as it was a weekend I'd say yes (weekdays, only if the M25 was for me alone).

OK but...

It's seven years since I last played here and in some ways it is an improvement, but not a lot.

The tees and fairways are reasonable, the greens are relatively true, but do appear to be along the lines of 'lets chuck a flattish patch there'. The headline 11th green is in dire need of repair as it appears the mower cannot deal with the tier changes.

On my last visit they had been talking of refurbishment of the clubhouse, well seven years on, no change,

On the whole, I had a better front nine, but enjoyed the back nine more.

All in all the round was no worse than many clubs, but did not live up to it's visitor rate - I would say they are at least £7 over the correct figure for a course of this standard.

And the big test is would you return? Maybe, but only as a twilight player.

Stunning views

Brocket Hall has a pair of excellent courses. I played the Palmerston this time and it is a course well worth the visit, but NOT at the headline price of £150 just for 18 on a weekday. Thankfully I was fortunate to play with a corporate membership.

The tee-boxes - super, the fairways just starting to show signs of wanting a little water, the greens - can i have 90sq m for my garden? You get to visit the 'halfway house' 3 times and if open I am told they do a good bacon or sausage butty.

The views are stunning - and only a little noise from the A1 on a couple of holes. It's close to civilization, but far enough away to be in a different world.

If given the chance of a return match at the same deal, or even twilight guest rates, I would be happy to return, but it is not worth the headline rate.

If you get the chance of playing as a guest go there, as there are problems with finance of the business, so like many courses, may not be there for ever.

Parkland course

Of the four courses played on this holiday, my first impression was that the course was dull and uninteresting, but on reflection I am glad I paid a second visit.

There are only a couple of outstanding holes, but all have their quirks. Most have a raised green, and all of the greens are in quite good condition. Doglegs are not all one way so all players are equally catered for. There are 5 par 3's and 5 par 5's. The last par 3 looks relatively easy - until you actually get to the green and the 16th - a 5 - is called Gigantica OB to the left, pond to the right and just 570 METRES! Good luck.

This is another course in the Pestana group - of the three played, it would be my number 2.

Having read Ian's review of this course there is very little to add. once this may have been a jewel of a course, but unfortunately the owners have let it go - yes we know there is a lack of money in the country, but that is not an excuse for a company that is obviously turning a shilling or two to let their business fall to disrepair. Will not return to this course when next in the area.

A long walk with really good golf

This is a hard course to walk as you start at the top of the hill and wind around it to start with, walking a long way from green to tee. Then once you are at the bottom, its a climb back to wards the top and then down to the links part, then to really rub it in you have to climb back up the hill for the 18th, then climb again to the club house. I now know what a goat has to contend with every day on the hills.

Walking aside, this is an excellent course hence 5/5. The course is very well maintained, there is no complaint with tee, fairway, bunker or green anywhere.

There are three nines here and I played the (hilly) Lagos and the (links) Praia. The wanders from the clubhouse down to the railway, then over the other side are the rest of the links holes coming up to an area that would in the UK be classed an area of conservation, then back under the tracks to another couple of links holes, then two more to take you back home.

An enjoyable course that warrants a future visit.

Hard work - but worth it

Played this course twice - first time I pulled a trolley - big mistake, an electric trolley is ok a buggy is much better. Lots of hills to climb, a fair distance between green and tee.

The course itself is the dearest to play on the Pestana hotels fee sheet and I can see why. Of the three Pestana courses I played it is the outstanding one. Tee boxes are good, fairways are in good repair - divots 'fixed' greens are cared for and run very true, bunkers have good sand layer.

The course is fairly forgiving and as long as you stay away from the hazards you'll enjoy, there is water on the 4th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 17th BUT even I missed it. Greens are tricky in places, and you may find your ball wants to have another chip!

4th is a par 3 over the pond, and looks more daunting than it actually is. The 5th is a blind par 4 up and around the top of a hill - watch the breeze from the left. 8th is a short par 4 that is driveable - if you aren't afraid of the trees on the mound. On the 13th you can cut the corner, but then you may have a chip over the trees. The 14th and on have twin greens - check the sign before you enter the area, but get to 16 and it is in fact a horseshoe green. the 18th is a lovely par 5 uphill to the clubhouse, complete with the captain's bunker in the front - the club house staff have no idea where the charity 'jar' is though.

Will happily play this course again in the future.

This is at present one of only two floodlit courses in the world. Forget night golf here at home with a few glow sticks and a glowing ball, this is another level.

Lets start at the beginning - the course is a relatively undemanding course. There are no major problems other than a few ponds. It is tree lined - all great pines that have been de-branched to at least twenty feet above the ground (looks like broccoli under the lamps) and the ground below them is covered with pine needles. The only other vegetation to worry about is heather, but that is protected and you get a free drop. The course is in fair condition - they are at present hollow tining and spot fixing the greens (it is after the season).

Fairways are quite lush, greens are pretty true and run quite well, but not overly fast, bunkers are well sanded and not the silly shallow things.

Like most places in Turkey, the green staff are friendly, the clubhouse staff helpful, but cannot say anything about the bar as we did not use it.

If you go to Turkey play this course, and start around two hours before sunset so you get the best of both experiences. Just wish we had the climate here for year round floodlit golf, unfortunately the way business seems to work in the UK, they would want to charge a small fortune and it would fail.

Faldo is an evil......

Played the three variations of this course, and all in my group had very unprintable words to say about Nick Faldo for the way he has designed the course, but what can you expect from a perfectionist.

There are three loops of 9 and these go to make up the Prince, Queen and King courses. Take your pick of the tees from championship to ladies - none are easy. All the fairways trickle off to the sides and dump you in the pine needles or dirt. The bunkers are well sanded and mainly deep - none of that shallow stuff that lets you see your ball all the way to missing the hole, you need to get out to see it run away! The greens are quick when you don't expect it, the half an hour later, they will slow down - but they are true.

These may be championship loops, but in reality it is just a resort golf course. You will take 5 hours to play 18, if you are playing more than a couple of rounds, make sure you buggy some of the time.

There is a food wagon that pops round a couple of times during your round, all the staff out on the course are friendly, but the staff in the bar are more interested in their mobiles, and cannot really be bothered to serve you. That said, you would probably play whilst staying at one of the parent hotels, so go back on the shuttle and drink on your 'all-in' package.

The question of course is would you play again - if my next trip to Turkey allows an extra round, this one would be on the cards, but it would have to be after the Sultan.

Played this course last around 6 or 7 years ago and there is a definite improvement. What I would say is that making a group of 23 people stand around for half an hour, when no members were going out, then two groups deciding to play at our tee time, is poor management by the Pro. And knowing that there was that 30 min gap in front, cannot work out why it took us 4 hours 40 minutes in the last group to complete a round.

The course is OK, but that is all, it's OK. The first nine are fairly interesting, but the second nine start to become 'samey'. Considering I only paid £29 for a two ball, I had expected post a better review, as it seemed a lot better course the last time I played there around 7 years ago.

Course itself was in reasonable condition, greens better that when Ian played, but it's biggest problem is that as a 'resort' course, there is little in the way of 'love and care' lavished on it.

Pro shop was helpful, but after playing the round, got back to the clubhouse and could only get and (extremely overpriced) bottle of beer as they were cleaning the pipes - at 6.50 in the evening?

If it's on a Groupon deal for the same money again, I may consider it, but for the full price, they will not see me again.

Where are the trees?

Have played this course over the last six years around 4/5 times a year. It is reasonable test of your fitness on the first six as you climb to the top of the hill, come down, then go back up before descending to the 7th. From the 7th it is pretty much flat, but that does not mean boring. There is a fair test of your game with ditches to avoid, a river that meanders through three holes and is the boundary on one hole.

As a cheap and cheerful course, you would be hard pressed to find many in the area that can beat it. We will return again this summer, despite the niggle detailed below. For anyone wanting to try this course, I think you'd be daft to miss it.

Until last year there was a spine of poplars dividing the course, but sadly the mad woodchopper has visited and taken away a huge chunk of character - it has removed the depth on a couple of holes and left a void in the centre of the twelve lower holes.

Good, but courses Excellent

There are three 9's here, all different, all really worth playing.

The Blue they say is the 'introduction course' - probably because it is dry, with no major problems, but it still has bushes around to lose a ball in and MANY bunkers to practice in.

The Yellow has very little water but a couple of OB's and some tighter fairways will keep you on the straight and narrow.

The Red is their 'crowning glory' or your watery grave, as there is water on 6 of the 9 holes. It's not all bad though, because if you don't 'go for it' you should stay dry.

All three of the loops are in excellent condition and I would dearly have liked to bring 90sqm home to replace the lawn, but.... The fairways are extremely well tended, the bunkers are sandy and fair (both the deeper and shallow ones) the greens are, unlike Spanish ones, not sandy based but grown from a good earthy base, and are true and in places tricky.

I suppose the test of a good course is would I come back? Absolutely, it's just that bit too far to get the Epping Bandits to play a Saturday or Monday, AND be home for tea.

NO disappointments here

Outside of the walled club area you would be forgiven for thinking 'what am I doing here'. Then the coach takes you through the gated entrance and all is slowly revealed.

There are two loops of 9 (The Championship) and an 18 (Tikida). The Championship is a touch Floridian, and as with the Tikida, is maintained to a high standard. Unlike the term that is used in most Spanish courses this is not an overpowering long course. It has good bunkers, some you will be lucky to putt out of, but all with sand in and none so penal as to want to give up. There is a fair share of water to negotiate, but again nothing too overpowering. The greens are good, well maintained and true.

The second 18, the Tikida, is more of a parkland course in the American style, yes that means no thick rough and bare beneath the trees. Again, the overall maintenance is good, bunkers are a fair test of your ability, but there are a few, and there is water for you to make your donations to the lake balls charity. And yes the greens are true and looked after.

You have the choice of trolley, buggy or caddie - the caddie is included in your ticket price, but a tip of between 100-150 dirhams is mandatory, and they will help/hinder as much as you allow them - but believe them on the greens!.

2nd time around and..

Second time of playing here, and will happily return again. Played in January and swore not to come back as it seemed that (in my tiny mind!) it was not very good, but obviously it was all in my mind and had a relatively OK round. It is a fair test, it is not the most demanding and the greens are not overly interesting. BUT play with a group out to enjoy themselves and the course is worth a visit.

Yes should the opportunity arise, I will return for another blast - hopefully the Atlantic will have receded back to where it is supposed to be and this course, like most others will be even more playable.

November - 23 degrees!!!!

The course is in Turkish northern Cyprus, so is not the quickest to travel to - 4.5 hours on a plane then 1.5 hours in a bus, not the best.

But when you actually get to see the course in the cold(very warm) light of day, then it becomes worth it. Looking out of the hotel windows onto the course, the backdrop is the view of the Troodos Mountains, which for most of the stay were shrouded in clouds, but it's a beautiful view all the same.

The course is much as you would expect all around the Mediterranean - fluffy Bermuda, sandy soil, bunkers with real sand, plenty of trees, some water and scrub areas around the edges.

The course is not simple to play, but it is not unplayable for a higher handicapper. There is a lot of variation, dead straight shortish par 4's - but that does not mean easy, short par 3's, but then factor an elevation change and relatively short par 5's which should be easy, but won't be.

A course to use your brain when playing, which is why I only had one decent round (brain left in UK)!!

As soon as the Turks and Greeks dismantle the border, and we are allowed to fly directly to the north of the island, it will be a pleasure to return. And that is the only thing that would make me think before rushing back.

Nicely hidden

From our first booking we expected it to be as snobby as Ian had found it, but there may have been a little change. Perhaps they, like most other courses are starting to feel the pinch and would like a little external cash to keep membership fees down.

We were booked to play and have a two course meal. Course was in excellent condition - club championship was due two days after playing - the greens had been 'ironed' (flattened with a weird piece of kit!) and was a pleasure to play - but must take exception to the par 3 17th, I'll just say that if you play TRUST THE BLUE pole!

After finishing the game we asked to sit outside and eat, instead of faffing around changing. No problem was the answer, but as it's getting chilly, come inside if you want - considering that we were told jacket and tie (after 7), this was a bonus.

All in all a friendly club who may (hopefully) have climbed into the 21st Century - will see if I get another invite.

(Society was charged £45 for bacon butty, coffee and two course meal with coffee)

Carpets!

The fairways are like carpets and the greens are somewhat faster carpets. The recommendations for this course were fully justified. next time there is a game I'll do my utmost to be there. A club built up by the membership, for the membership, and all credit they have done a superb job.

It's an Open Qualifier course, and after playing the first nine you wonder - why? Well the reason you think that way is, first that you are playing off the yellows/reds and, second you have yet to play the second nine.

For a change, the putting green is just like the greens on the course. It is also good to see that the green staff are actually filling the divots with seed, sand and earth instead of leaving them. The tee boxes ALL have 'hole fillers' available, and ALL have bins and ball cleaners.

It is also in a stunning area that has but one blot on it - the M25, but ignore that and it is a wonderful place to play. I have every intention of returning whenever there is a game that I can fit in with. It would have had 5*'s but the chipping area was a bit of a walk!!

Tight but interesting

Welcome to Coventry! This is a cracking course, IF played at the correct times. Don't go on a weekend as there are a few weekend warriors who probably haven't played since last year. That said, the course is short (less than 5k yards) but is no pushover. There is a lot of OB and enough water to drown more than 1 ball, both in ponds and numerous ditches. It seems very odd to start with three par 3's, but they are no pushover as the slopes WILL get you.

In theory, at least 3 driveable par 4's, but theory is not necessarily correct, as there are the ditches, the trees and the dog's hind leg to stop it happening.

I would visit this course again, but would guess the best time would probably be a weekday, and probably early afternoon

After the previous management gave up, the new management team are really trying. They have taken a ten year lease and actually started paying the ground staff, so there is starting to be some improvement to the course.

It is clear that the reason this club has not been as busy as it should was due to previous ways, ie, the price was too high, the Pro was definitely not 'up to par' and the ground staff were badly treated. These same ground staff are now working hard on bringing the course back to life. Instead of the brown fairways of last year, the area is mostly green.

Greens are pretty true, but might not be as fast as you think....or are they! Fairways are in good condition. Unfortunately the bunkers are poor - complete lack of sand, but the plus side of this, is that you can putt out of nearly all greenside ones.

Try not to venture off the fairways where there is scrub to the sides as your ball may either be lost or 20 foot below you. There are a couple of blind shots, but a staight drive should not cause a problem, What may cause an added problem is the ice plant that is beginning to establish itself. There are a couple of OB areas that you would not really expect to be there as they are part of the property, but, hey that's life!

There is plenty of water to avoid, but again should cause no problem with staight drives. The thirteenth is a very simple par 3, tee off (from a hill top) over some scrub to the (another hill top) green.

Did I mention that straight drives would cause no problem? Sorry forgot the prevailing wind... comes up the valley from the Med, and gets to it's worst around 5 to 7 each evening - better keep those drives arrow like!

A delight

Played the Old course three times and the New course twice. Would recommend both courses, but the easiest is the New course. From the time you arrive the staff are there to help. The level of customer care makes the UK care almost non existent. After checking in for your tee-time, there is a large shop, a wee bit pricey, but it is on a course and is a holiday destination. There is an excellent bar and even better patio area surrounded on three sides by a very 'fishy' pond. Food is good and reasonably priced, beer is good and cool and again the staff are most helpful. There is no pressure on the courses once you are underway, but as it is a resort course you should really expect 4.5 to 5 hours for a round. We were lucky in just under the 4.5 for all 5 rounds (and the Old course is a 'looonnng' walk).

The practice areas are, exceptional. Chipping (large) area in front of the clubhouse, putting green to the side. Two level driving range. Three more chipping greens on the way to the Old course and another putting green.

Other comments (Trip Advisor) have said the greens are woeful and the rounds are slow - I think this may depend on when you go, as to whether it is peak time or not. I must say that in early March, it is a delight to go there and play - Hotel recommendation would be the Gloria Verde, but go all-inclusive.

Yet another course in Epping Forest - how do they fit trees in as well? That said it is a relatively short but quite tight course. Unfortunately this year, being the almost total washout that we have endured, has not helped the course at all. There are a lot of boggy areas, but there is a lot that is just quite damp. With 4 par 3's and just the one par 5, there is nothing that really stands out, BUT, that does not mean it is a boring course. There are plenty of ditches, trees and bunkers to beware of. Long hitters will probably not need a driver more than once, but us lesser mortals are able to use it often. As with most courses at this time of the year, the trees shedding their leaves can cause a little frustration, but keep away from the leaves (and trees) and your game will be enjoyable. If you go around now, the 15th is not badly sanded, it's just covered in fine needles. I'd have to say it is a typical members club, so leave your mobile phone off in the clubhouse, and be aware the membership 'own' the course! Look forward to playing here when the never ending 'drought of 2012' finishes...

It will not happen overnight, but a good start has been made. If they keep spending on the Baron course, it will be excellent VFM. They have made the bunkers sandy instead of muddy, the fairways are in pretty good nick, and the greens are a vast improvement on what used to be - now having grass ALL over and are being looked after (and true). The final push is to tidy up some rather tatty tee boxes. The question is, would you go back? Yes, next year I think I will. No idea about the Baroness course, perhaps that will get played another day.

Very well maintained - very friendly

Tucked away in the countryside of the heart of Hertfordshire, this course was a joy to play. At £40 for a weekday round it may seem steep, but winter rates are about to kick in at £25 for a DAY (1/11 on). The course has been there since 1892 and its best known 'old boy' was the late Terry Wogan and I can see why he enjoyed playing it.

At 5805yds it's not the longest, so you will not need the driver all the time, just keep it straight, out of the rough - which is wispy at present - and out of the trees. Neither are that penal, but don't all the same.

The tees are well cared for - all the divots sanded, and there is a sand box on most tees. The fairways are much the same, and the grass is short and 'bouncy' - make what you will of that! Run your hand over the green and you would be forgiven for thinking they are long, but do not be fooled, as they are fairly quick and true.

Either a stroke saver or (if you know one) a member on your round would help as most holes are not what they appear and getting to the green you will find that you will think that a bigger club would have done 'if only you knew what was round that tree/bend'.

just watch your back on the 7th, as the practice area is adjacent, and they don't always think of shouting......

All in all a good course that I would hope to play again in the near future.

Hidden gem

Drive towards Stratford-upon-Avon and you would be forgiven missing this course and finding it's neighbour the Welcombe. But you really should not miss it. This is a parkland course that will certainly exercise you on the trips up and down hill.


A course planner (or GPS) would be handy as there are several blind tee shots due to dog-legs and elevation changes. The greens are in quite good condition and a couple appear as an optical illusion, as you will find the ball goes the opposite way.... Bunkers are quite deep closer to the greens, but the fairway bunkers will let you use woods to escape.


The 6th is a 200yd plus par 3 downhill, choose wisely but take in the view first, then on to the almost drivable 7th. The 13th is a par three of a mere 150yds, but you may need oxygen by the time you get to the green. Make sure you take an extra club (or 2 or 3...) as the wind may funnel straight into your face. 14th, a par 5, is back down the hill giving you a chance of a welcomed birdie.


When you get to the 18th, don't go in any bunkers ALL will cost you 50p to the Captain's charity.


All in all a lovely course. This is the second time my group have stayed there, and is now on our list of 4 return venues. And yes the price is reasonable for an overnight, two rounds excellent dinner and breakfast.


One criticism is that there was no food on a Bank holiday afternoon as the chef was off 'til 6.30. Other than that I'd suggest you put it on your list.

Interesting, but...

The clubhouse is pretty modern, and there are reasonable changing rooms. There is no spike bar as such just the end of the bar where they take the green fees - no pro shop. The staff were pleasant, which is not something that could be said for one member who would not allow anyone else to use the chipping green until he had finished! Once we teed off we found that you either need a course planner or someone who has played there before to be with you. A GPS was helpful, but not overly so as greens were often not visible from the tee. The greens are not in tip top condition, but are pretty firm except for the odd patch from the rains - they are in dire need of a trim as most are slow. Bunkers are for the most part shallow - cut outs in the grass - with a thin layer of sand. Fairways are well delineated and in good nick (but for the rain), but again it's those bunkers! The course runs right up to the M4, so some holes there is a lot of noise. As we have had a lot of rain over the past weeks, some latitude must be given for the state of the course, but not as much as it needs. There has obviously been some flooding, which in time will completely clear, but at present the stagnant water stinks. This could be a really cracking course if the drainage was sorted out and the bunkers were made into real hazards. I'd say for the £15 deal we played on today, it is VFM, and as it's only £20 normally, the locals are probably reasonably happy, but I'd not go out of my way for a game there - that does not mean I'd not play it again.

Tight, but fair

This course has a relatively tight layout, no criss crosses, but slotted together well. Not the longest at 5864 off the yellows, but don't think a driver will enable you to muscle your way round the course. The greens are not that big, but they are true and quite quick. Like most courses at present (07/12) it has suffered from the rain, but not badly, probably worst hit are the bunkers as the sand is now more mud.

The clubhouse has a minuscule spike bar, but change your shoes and there is acres of lounge area. The meal on our society day was roast lamb and then crumble - if the rest of the food served is of that quality, it's worth a return for on it's own.

Practice areas - there is a driving range - take your own balls, a pitching area - not large and you are in fear of getting a flyer and hitting someone, and a putting green - and yes the greens ARE that quick!

Our society have decided it is worth a revisit, all in all an honest course that makes you welcome.

Whittlebury is within 'driver' distance of Silverstone circuit and you can hear the cars going around the track. The courses - three 9's are varied, yellow the easiest, red a little more complex and the blue I am told even more so. We played on the Monday Madness deal, which was £15 for the Yellow/Red. considering the deluge we have had recently, the course was pretty good with just a few larger damp patches. The Greens are true, but appear a little slower in places, probably due to the rain again. there is an automated bay driving range, a putting green (closed 25/06) and something that is akin to crazy golf on a smaller scale. The bar area is large with a choice of lush settee's and tables and chairs. I would assume there was food available, but no one ate whilst we were there. Good choice of beers and snacks. We will definitely be back during the summer months with a deal like that.

Home of the Ryder Cup

As the home of the Ryder Cup, it is a little more pretentious than it should be, but for all that a good test of your abilities. The course is in pretty good condition, probably a few more divots than you would hope for, but that is down to the wet weather. Greens were pretty quick today, thankfully it rained overnight, otherwise they would have been a nightmare. Bunkers were in good nick with ample sand, the rough was ball and a bit height, but absolutely penal if you went beyond. 4th time of playing and it is improving, I suppose they have had over a hundred years to get it right, but they are still learning! All in all not bad at all.

Good MEMBERS course

There it is, the word in capitals, MEMBERS. This is a really nice course, the tee boxes are looked after, fairways are in pretty good condition, there IS sand in the bunkers and the greens are quite quick. This course doesn't have your normal expectation of fairly flat greens (why do they do that?), plenty of undulations and tiers to look out for. The practice facilities consist of a field to practice your driving - take plenty of balls and collecting tube. There are a couple of nets and a realistic putting green. There is an area for chipping - by the putting green, and it is only six feet wide. The clubhouse and members are quite friendly, food is excellent and bar prices very fair. What's the but, I hear you ask? Simple, the price - with a member Monday to Friday it is £27, as a pay and play visitor, it's a whopping £44. Good course, never worth that much, even at the weekend.

Course in itself is not too bad, except the corrugated fairways. Drive it down the middle and be prepared to have a down hill lie on one shot and an uphill lie on the next. Flatten the undulations out and improve the course by a huge percentage. Practice area I saw was a net, but the have an indoor area, with sign at entrance saying indoor golf. The putting green was shut. Having played this course several years ago, I was expecting better. The clubhouse is not bad, but overall the visit was marred by those undulations. I would play again, but will not be rushing back.

I have now played both the Rothschild and Rosebery courses and of the two I pick the first. They are just fairly normal parkland courses that attract an over the top fee for playing. I was lucky enough to play both times on a Groupon voucher and both friends I played with were happy to play at the reduced rate, but neither would value a (weekday) round at worth more than £25 - headline price £50. The course yesterday (01/05) was still open even though it was near flooded at the start of the round and unplayable by half way round due to the torrential thunderstorm that came in. No shutting of the course because they would have had to give another round at a later date.

The clubhouse is very friendly with a good variety of booze and food. There is also Spa at the clubhouse, which appears very well attended. There are many people that rate this course highly, but the three of us over two days, forgetting the foul weather, do not think it is that good.

Two courses are next door to each other, and this is not the best. The greens are 'fluffy' so do not run true, fairways, unlike next door, does not have bermuda grass, but more the sort you see at home, and as at home it is somewhat patchy - different seeds!! It is slightly dearer that next door, but this is probably a reflection of the 5* hotel on site, as it is not the course quality that sets it. Would I play again - yes - it is head and shoulders above many courses in the UK, just not as good as you would hope for on your holidays. Yes, back there in 8 months!

Best of the two

Almost within walking distance of the hotel area, but for the wire fences! Quality of this course is the better of the two in the area, and also the cheaper. The greens run true and are reasonably well looked after. Fairways are pretty good, but be warned STAY OFF THE BLACK STUFF! The black stuff is NOT GUR, but should be played off of, and will make you wish you had a tatty set of clubs with you. There is quite a bit of this stuff on the course, but it's your own fault for going on it as the course is generously wide. As Fuertaventura is the windy isle, pray for a good one at 11, Buenaventura, and GO for it.

Would I go back - too right, in fact in 8 months.

OK, but....

As a municipal, it's not bad, thankfully no ne'er do wells today, but add on that it is part of the Burhill group, it needs a little improvement. It would appear the focus is on the 'Pirate Crazy Golf' that has opened recently. Twilight charge of £9.99 was good, but £3.95 for a trolley with hedgehogs is a rip off, especially when Redbourn wich is the same group charge 3 quid! The state of some of the greens and some of the fairways would belie the fiction of a drought being on the cards.

Overall the course is not that bad, I am probably being a little picky, but as a customer, I can be.. ;-)

The course was a little waterlogged, more than I would expect from the weather. Pro shop shut and the little that there was is displayed in the bar. This is a resort and a half!

The golf course is a pretty good, relatively new parkland and after 11 years is still bedding in. There are no real obstacles other than the water hazards. On your drive to the Hotel, you pretty much see what to expect with the forests of power generating windmills - yes there is wind but it's not a show stopper. A further 18 hole course is scheduled and a proper club house.

The hotel is absolutely magic! All in is the only way. The food in the three themed restaurants is excellent, that does not include the 'snack bar' by the pool - have your lunch by the pool and they cook steaks, kebabs, fresh fish - basically whatever you want.

If you want luxury go to the Fairplay Hotel and Benalup golf course. Providing the tour operator does it again, I am most definitely booked. Hotel is rated a 5* - I'd give it a 6* - and it has a Spa, so take the other half and leave them to it!!!

Not bad. For the price worth a visit. We put up with the spiked greens so should you go soon they will be ok. Fairways and tees on the whole pretty good and the bunkers had more sand in than some I've played. The clubhouse is not bad, and reasonably priced (unless you want a diet Coke - £1.90 for a little bottle) a panini with salad and chips for less than a fiver is a good, tasty, deal. Oh, and don't worry, when you drive through a 'trailer park' - it's ok when you get to the golf course!!

Played in a HDID comp so played as a guest - that was £19 which is not bad for a Saturday afternoon. The course is narrow, but not as much as I was told. As it's been there for 75 years now, it is a very mature course. As with many 'members clubs' there is an ongoing project to improve and rebuild greens, tees and the like. The greens are true, and ALL have divot repair bins on them - pity not all clubs can boast the same - probably cost too much! If you read the web pages, you could be put off as it appears 'stuffy' - wrong - very friendly. Would happily play again.

A gem

In the middle of nowhere it may be, but it is a gem of a parkland course. There is no reason to go in the rough as it is an open course, but if you do - TUFF!! Greens could be a little better, but on the whole the course is pretty honest. It's my 8th time and am booked to go back next year. If you fancy a golf week they have a bungalo at the 15th and do an 'all you can play deal'. If I had any mates(!) I'd go myself!!

Top Golf!!

Attached to the 5* Marriot, this is an excellent golf course. Conditions are very good, fairways excellent, greens you can usually only wish for, bunkers with REAL sand in all. The rough is as it should be - penal, but you need to be off line some way to be in it.

There is a halfway house, but didn't use it.

Only drawbacks - 1. It's reportedly £50 per round weekdays - IF you can get on as a visitor. You really need to be a member or guest at the hotel. 2. 5 hour round - but you have to expect that at a 'resort hotel'.

Yes I would play again if the conditions were right.

Not the greatest course in the world, but nowhere near a poor one.

Played here several times with little complaint.

Beware cardiac hill - either leave the trolley and take the clubs you need, take a buggy (best bet) or use an electric trolley.

Can be exceptionally slippery after a lot of poor weather.

Having paid more money elsewhere for inferior facilities, I would say I'll be back many more times in the future.

I played with a society. We got a decent deal and each paid for a bacon roll and coffee, a round of golf and a two course meal afterwards.
The actual charge for golf is advertised as £36, but is probably only worth £25 on a weekday. I would play again, but only by booking cheap online.
As to the course - it is quite long at 6500 yds off the yellows. Some rough is ok, but whatch ou the rest is penal. The greens are pretty reasonable, in fact the whole course is quite good.
Time will tell if the course gets the chance to 'grow up' but will depend on the way it is used - hopefully it will not become a 'resort' course.

My advice - give it a go, but book online.

No major surprises await you. I would have to say that it is not a tough course, but on the other hand does give you a challenge.

Practice facilities let this one down. The course is tight, especially in the wind. Plenty of water to lose balls in. Bunkers need a little more sand. The greens run true and really show up the effect of the grain. The hotel is only three star, but do not be fooled - it's on our groups repeat visit list.

This course is not in the bay, but up on the cliff tops. There is a road between it and the drop, so no problems there.

It is a very 'linksy' course - the ball does run on away. Some may say it is not well tended, but you must remember it is National Trust land so is used by all and sundry - watch out for the walkers.

Greens are true and not 'gimmes' plenty of undulations on most. As you are on the cliff top, the wind does effect, and I am sure that it is not a place to play mid-winter, but when the weather is good it's not to be missed.

Not the cheapest in the world, but as the Island has a captive audience, you pay what is asked.

I'm back in the summer and will probably play it again.

Slightly more than a Par 3

This is a course in progress. The present 9 hole Par + is due over the next two years to grow into an 18 hole course.

The standard of the present part is OK - greens are true fairways, quite well tended, tee boxes better than a lot.

It's not a tough course - just the gorse that gets in the way. This is slightly above a beginners course and can get a little tougher when the breeze gets up.

If you go to the Isle of Wight, take half a dozen clubs and have a round.

Greens are nothing to write home about. There are no rakes in the bunkers, very few rubbish bins and no ball cleaners. But that's probably because they'd get nicked by the yobo's that are bound to live locally!

Still, for £15 including a bacon buttie on a Saturday morning it's not too bad.

Bit of a gem

Slap bang in the centre of the Isle of Wight. Just 9 holes, but 18 different tees on the majority of the holes. Watch out for the westerly winds as this has a tendancy to direct your balls to out of bounds and other hazards.

Water on 3 (6) holes.

Will be back to it's best when 2010's winter/spring have dried out.

Don't expect Wentworth, but do expect a tight course and stunning views.
