Tricky Course...

Played here yesterday and had a great round. Friendly staff, challenging course... shortish BUT you need to think your way round. Will be back for TSG OPEN in August. Looking forward to playing here again. Full review to follow.

Berkshire Golf Club

Great course...

I had the pleasure of playing at The Berkshire Golf Club back in April 2024 (before my back sidelined me for 5 months). Not only was it a fantastic course, but I also got to try out my new clubs.

A traditional members' club with a superbly manicured heathland course, this club is ranked among the Top 100 golf courses—and for good reason.

Perfect tee boxes, wide undulating fairways, and slick greens make it a golfer's paradise.

However, not only do you need an invitation to play here, but if you get one, it could cost as much as £155 for a round Monday to Friday and £220 on weekends.

Fortunately, I was there by invitation, but if you get the opportunity to play it, jump at the chance!

P.S. The new clubs worked a treat—I split 13 out of 14 fairways, though I haven’t used them since (as of September 2024).

The Pearl of Africa...

The Toro Golf Club in Fort Portal, Western Uganda is an amazing little golf course set in the lush rainforest area of Western Uganda.

Established by the colonials in the early 1920s (when Uganda was a British Protectorate), this course is good exercise, given the course is approx 6,000 ft above sea level.

Having traveled here in support of the Afriyea Golf Academy, it was a pleasure to play here twice with the Amateur Uganda National Women's Champion 2023 and Coach Lillian.

While only a 9-hole course, it feels like a mature and well-designed layout that has more of an 18-hole feel.

I've certainly never teed off surrounded by 20 or more vultures - and what can only be described as characters from The Jungle Book - on the 1st tee, who took off heading for the rainforest on my downswing.

The course is undulating and has a varied selection of holes but the greens struggle (especially in the dry season) to stay completely true.

However, who cares, you're a few minutes away from the jungle and amazing scenery.

What I like most about this club, is that every visitor is given a Caddie, who will carry your bag, give you advice and look for your ball. For only £2! However, I made sure mine was bought drinks after, which not everyone does!

This not only provides employment for the kids, but it gives them valuable opportunities to meet people from all walks of life.

I struggled to score here but I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Toro Golf Club if you are in the area!

Pretty Parkland Course...

Hendon Golf Club in North London is a well-established golf course designed by five-time OPEN Champion J H Taylor and Harry Vardon.

On arrival, the Clubhouse is welcoming and the staff are friendly. In addition, there is a large veranda overlooking the 18th Green on which to enjoy a coffee before you play.

The course itself is fairly flat and has plenty of space to play, meaning the course is forgiving for higher handicappers. However, with greens as quick as anywhere I've played this year, beware!

The course is compact, and therefore easy to walk between holes, and there is a good combination of hole designs to keep you coming back for more. Some of the Par 3's are tricky, with small landing areas, so bring your short game, if you want to score well.

We played on a sunny day in September and you would have no idea you were just a few miles from the centre of London's great metropolis.

Alas, we didn't have time to sample the Clubhouse food but perhaps we'll save this for the next visit.

All in all, a great little course (albeit 6K+ yards off the yellows), well maintained, with superb greens, I will definitely play here again!

Mature and pretty...

West Essex Golf Club is a course I've wanted to play for a long time, and it was well worth the wait!

Tucked away from the madding crowds of northeast London with views overlooking Canary Wharf and the West End of London, this course has it all.

With beautiful fairways, testing Greens, and a varied layout, this course is a must for everyone in the area.

The Clubhouse is modern and light with friendly staff.

In addition, Jamie in the PRO shop couldn't have been more welcoming.

He advised me on the best way to approach the course as someone who had not played it before and told me where not to use the driver!

The course is very well maintained with pretty tee boxes and lush fairways.

However, it's a tale of two halves. The front 9 is tight and requires straight drives. But the back nine opens up, giving a little more forgiveness to the higher handicapper.

Not overly long, the course is very walkable (with some inclines) but watch out for "Cardiac Hill" on the 18th hole!

Primarily a 'Members' Club, I played at Guest rates (£35) which was very reasonable.

Great course but club is stuck in 1920's...

Frinton Golf Club on the Essex east coast has been on my list of golf courses to play since I was a kid. However, back then they would not have entertained a young interloper like me, but 35 years later due to an invitation via a mate's golf society, I stepped onto the first tee of this well-known course with great anticipation.

Now I'll start by saying this is a superbly maintained golf course! Beautiful fairways (albeit a bit bumpy in places - see below), well-manicured greens, and pleasing vistas of the beach huts and expansive skies above. Completely flat, this is an easy course to walk but not so easy to navigate - why do clubs not put up signage for the visiting golfer?

Not a true Links course, the course was built on marshland and despite its flat terrain, driving a buggy is like taking on the mogul fields of Switzerland for the afternoon, as such, I'd have rather walked.

The food in the clubhouse was good, and all the bar staff were pleasant and friendly but I somehow I left thinking, nice day, great course but I won't be rushing back.

Why? Well, I just didn't feel welcome...

The Pro shop was disinterested in my asking about the course, and even more disinterested in knowing about The Social Golfer, which with a good review could encourage more visitors to your club.

In addition, having to hire a buggy (my mate is a disabled golfer, so we have to) I was appalled at the £30 fee. On what planet are these people on? Surely there could be a concession for disability.

However, the most irritating thing is we left a rangefinder in the buggy by mistake. 

When my pal called the club the next day and asked if it could be returned via post (all paid for of course), he was told no, you'll have to drive two hours round trip to come and get it.

Clearly, this club has been spoiled by its local members' loyalty but as we enter a second year of a 'Cost of Living' crisis, this golf club needs to move out of the 1920s and into the 2020s!

Home of Mr Justin Rose....

North Hants Golf Club is a well-known venue, for none other reason than this is apparently where Justin Rose learned to play the game!

A very nicely laid-out golf course, with wide fairways and great greens. Some water scattered around the course too. Actually, it's a pretty forgiving course but watch out for the gorse!

However, I think the Green Fee rack rate is £120, as nice as it was, this golf course is not worth that.

The course is a bit scruffy in places and if you want to hit a higher-end audience, then the course should be pristine. Maybe the price point is there to deter visitors?!

All the staff were very friendly, food was excellent.

Had a great day but won't rush back!

Lovely little course...

Welwyn Garden City Golf Club is just lovely!

Well done the Greenkeepers, they clearly know what they are doing, as this is, without doubt, one of the best-maintained courses I have played on in the last few years.

Short-ish in length most golfers will enjoy playing here but don't wander off the fairways, as you will be playing out of the trees on your next shot.

Up and down in places (so watch the calf muscles) but so well looked after with nicely-cut fairways, tidy tee boxes, and pretty woodland all around.

Apparently, this is the young Sir Nick Faldo learnt his trade...I am already looking forward to going back!

Royal Mid Surrey Golf Club

History, Golf & Great Food...

Royal Mid Surrey is steeped in history, from famous club Captains to WC Grace's original images hanging on the walls of the Clubhouse. Not to mention the Putter of JH Taylor which he used to win his 5th Open championship. The lush fairways are a pleasure to play on and the green are as expected, hard, fast, and true.

Low Laithes Golf Club

Tired, dirty and stuck in the 70's....

I played Low Laithes Golf Club in Yorkshire in Sep 2022 and despite looking forward to it a lot, I couldn't have been more disappointed. Everything about this club suggests the owners (or the Members) don't care! From the Breakfast to the coffee, to the dirty cutlery and the grubby chairs, I would have no interest in returning to the club.

The course itself is OK, and I am sure it has seen better days, but the constant criss-crossing of holes (I actually teed off over two Tee boxes during the round) suggests that you should have insurance before visiting. However, so's not to be seen as running the place down completely, I would highlight a couple of very pretty Par 3 holes but otherwise, it's fairly unmemorable.

Such a shame, as my hosts are members here (albeit as part of a group club membership) but even they were embarrassed by the quality of the greens, and the state of the clubhouse. Come on guys, it's 2022, give the place a proper clean and modernise!

Best course I've played in 2022...

Chesterfield Golf Club in Derbyshire is way out of my normal catchment area but when invited to take part in a Society event with TSG Blogger Kevin Booth, I was keen to check it out.

OMG! This is an excellent course. Beautiful panoramic views, lush fairways (even after a blistering summer of 2022) and so much variety in the holes. Now it always helps if you play well, but in this instance, I felt I had to work really hard for my 32 pts. However, with superb greens, that was a great score.

Let's just say, I watched four under-18 handicappers Putt off the green twice, each from 10 foot!

With undulating fairways, fast greens, great scenery and only 10 mins from the M1, I would love to play this course again. If you get the chance, grab it!

Colne Valley Golf and Country Club

Tight Parkland Course...

Colne Valley Golf and Country Club in Essex is situated just a few miles north of Colchester. It is a traditional parkland layout with tight fairways and plenty of undulations and quirks to keep you on your toes.

On arrival, we were welcomed with a smile and a friendly Pro-shop and all the members we met were helpful and polite, not something afforded in many members' clubs! The clubhouse is clean and airy with a generous patio area overlooking the 9th & 18th Green. Yes, it's a two-pin green.

The course itself has stood up pretty well to the unusual summer heat and the Greenkeepers should be applauded for some very well-kept greens. All were flat and true. Although be aware, there are some tricky borrows to look out for.

Not overly long (5950 off the yellows), you will need to pick your target areas carefully and watch out for some 'hidden' bunkers, which caught out this first-time visitor on many occasions, I think I found 5 in total. However, that will teach me to study the course before playing.

What I enjoyed about this course was SIX Par 3's with the stand-out hole being the pretty197 yards 13th, from a raised tee to a raised Green, don't miss it or you could be looking at a double bogey. And the 17th, 143-yard shot to a bunker-protected green with a 30ft drop tee to Green.

All in all, a great little golf course. One that you will enjoy the more you play it.

Looking forward to going back already!

Beauty & History...

Royal Musselburgh Golf Club is not only one of the most historic golf clubs in the world but it also is a course that you will love, from the first tee to the last.

Established in 1774, Royal Musselburgh Golf Club claims to not only be the 6th oldest golf course on the planet but also home to the OLDEST golf trophy - The Old Club Cup - that is still played every year - and is one of those courses that you will never forget.

On arrival, a beautiful building awaits you, along with a friendly welcome from the Pro Shop and Greenkeepers, and the bar staff. In addition, all the members were smiling and happy to see us.

The course is a Parkland layout and while mostly flat, there are more than enough undulations to keep wondering...just where will my ball end up?

The vista of the old stone clubhouse comes into view numerous times during your round and some of the trees bordering the fairways of the course are more than a few hundred years old too.

My stand-out holes were the 14th Par 3, with a treacherous 25ft drop to a 'bowl' on the left (if you miss it) and the 15th - a Par 4, dog-leg left to a raised and generous green. A good tee shot here, with some run, can still leave you with a 7 iron to the centre but take a moment to look back and enjoy the path you've just followed to appreciate the hole in full.

The Clubhouse still houses the FIRST ever hole-cutting device (an old pipe of 4.25 inches) which went on to set the standard for every golf hole we all now play into.

Lastly, the food was served with a smile, was reasonably priced and included all the traditional Scottish fayre including Haggis and square sausage for brekkie!

In short, if I lived close to the Scottish border, I would happily nip across and play this course over and over again, it was an honour to play at a course so steeped in the history of the game!

Forrester Park Golf Club

Seen better days..

Forrester Park Golf Club had been on the 'radar' for a while, so was delighted when I saw a game posted there. However, despite being described as an 'interesting/quirky' course, this is not a course I would want to return to in a hurry.

On arrival Forrester Park GC was busy and bustling from Saturday am golfers and yet meracioulsily just before we teed off at 2.15 pm, the place emptied and we were pretty much left to ourselves. So on that basis, it's millionaire's golf. However, apart from a couple of pretty holes and testing holes, you're left thinking about what might have been...

My complaints:

1. I don't want to play my tee shots for a dust bowl
2. There is ZERO signage to help the visitors find their way around
3. There are LONG walks between holes
4. Why not cut the daisies on the fairway, this might speed up play, instead of golfers searching for their ball in the middle of the fairways, thus holding up groups behind
5. No 100/150-yard markers, meaning with a GPS, you were constantly guessing distances

On a positive note, the course is entirely flat, and 9/10 green were well maintained, so good for the higher handicapper and I had no complaints about the Ham, Eggs and Chips.

Putting the above comments into perspective, we only paid £20 for the round and the buggy was only £19, which I felt was very reasonable.

Overall, I am glad I have played it but can't think of a concrete reason to return.

Boyce Hill Golf Club

Well maintainded BUT...

Boyce Hill Golf Club is a private members club nestled in south Essex a few miles of the A127 and A13 and not far from Rayleigh and Southend.

On arrival, you'll see what seems like a traditional style clubhouse but on entry, you are met but a very modern interior, with huge glass windows, allowing you to watch those on the 9th green and the putting green. However, walk through the french doors to the patio area and you can watch the golfers finishing their round on a very pretty Par 3 hole.

So things to be aware of:

1. Boyce Hill is exactly what it says...hilly!
2. There are a lot of blind shots, so don't expect to play to your handicap the first time you play
3. The Greens are very well maintained and lighting quick
4. Whilst short-ish at 5,800 yards, you will need to be conservative to score well

Another thing to mention is the food. Not only was the bacon roll on arrival, probably the best bacon roll I have had in years, but the food post-round was excellent too.

So, without describing every hole, all I will say is this is a great course, that I would like to play again and again, as I have no doubt if you are familiar with the course, you would do better than my meagre 22 pts.

However, at £47 a round (midweek), I suspect there are other courses close by that are better value but as a one-off, it's worth the money!

South Essex Golf Club

WOW! What a difference...

So as a local Brentwood resident, I have had the pleasure of playing at South Essex Golf Club a number of times over the years. However, the change to the course (and Clubhouse) since my last visit in mid-2020 is huge!

Not only have the owners spent a great deal of money on restoring the greens and fairways (to an excellent standard) but the hours that must have been spent re-landscaping some of the holes (and bunkers) is truly inspiring. I counted at least six holes that look (and feel) completely different to what was there before.

I have always maintained that Essex needs a good, superbly maintained but affordable golf club to play at...and this could be it. I can't wait to go back and revisit. If you haven't been to South Essex GC in a while, now is the time to visit!

Very average...

Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club is another one that had been on my bucket list for some time but this one turned out to be a disappointment!

I'll start with the good points - there are some nice holes here and it is always nice to play by the sea and there are parts of the course that are very picturesque!

BUT, I just found the course to be a little scruffy in places, the greens were fluffy and the signage around the course is truly dreadful - I never understand why for the cost of a few pennies why courses never focus on the visitor experience.

However, despite a very nice atmosphere created by the organiser (Martha Trust Disability Charity), the talk at the dinner table was about how poor the Pro Shop was. They don't return Buggy request calls, in fact, it would seem they don't return anyone's calls. So, although my playing partners had asked for buggy 10 days prior to the event, they were forced to walk on the day - with bad backs and dodgy knees - 18 holes with clubs on their back. Such a shame when the bar staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful and the food more than satisfactory.

Sadly, having driven 1 hr 40 mins, there (and the same back) I will not be returning any time soon, for no other reason than if I am expected to pay a premium price (normally £45 just for golf only midweek), I expect a premium service...and some signage!

High Elms Golf Club

Pretty, Mature and established but...

High Elms Golf Club is a course that I have been meaning to visit for some time, so I was looking forward to the day.

Set in the attractive woodlands of High Elms Country Park, which has historical associations with Charles Darwin, High Elms GC is just 10-minutes from Bromley and Orpington.

The course is tucked away from the main roads but easy to find with the Sat Nav.

We stopped for a coffee in the modern and clean spike bar area, over-looking a somewhat tired-looking Putting Green with buggy tracks across it. Sadly, this proved to be a metaphor for the rest of the course.

This is a mature and well laid out course, but you get the impression it has been a little neglected. Tee boxes were overgrown, fairways scruffy, yet it did not stop me from enjoying the course.

There are some lovely holes on this course and with a little TLC and some enthusiasm, this could be a cracking venue.

The 13th hole was once voted Kent’s toughest par 3. At 224 yards from the white tees, I would agree, this is a seriously testing hole, as despite hitting two of my best 3-woods of 2021, I still couldn't reach the green.

In addition, there is some beautiful Par 4 and 5's on this course.

However,, whilst all the staff were pleasant enough, you did feel like everything was a little casual. When we asked about the membership and the history of the course, we were told to visit the website?!

When we asked if there was anything to know about the course, no advice was given.

However, on visiting said website, we found there was nothing more than a couple of links about pricing and how you can claim a £20 credit off a membership. Nothing referring to the history or the course designers, or in fact the course in any real detail.

What a missed opportunity to educate visitors on the club and its benefits.

Pricing for 18 holes midweek is £30, which in today's climate is about right but I would argue there are better courses in the area which provides better value.

I would happily return, but I am kind of left feeling like the club wouldn't be bothered if I did or not.

West Malling Golf Club

Nice an' easy....

So, having been to West Malling Golf Club numerous times, I was sure I had played both The Hurricane (Marky Mark's Annual Golf Day) and The Spitfire.

But despite playing both courses within a week of each other, I had absolutely no recollection of The Spitfire course (which I am reviewing here).

And how would I forget the behemoth of a golf hole, otherwise known as The Eiger!

Yep, a 332 yards, Par 4, 15th, that drops twenty feet from the tee and rises another sixty feet to the green.

Oh and I should mention, it's a blind second shot!

The rest of the course is parkland in layout and while the course undulates in many places, it's a pretty easy walk.

Whilst most fairways are open, there are a couple of narrow holes and some excellent little Par 3 to navigate, all reachable and fun to play.

In short, I like the course and with most greens true and manicured, it's in great condition. There was a couple of greens that could be better but nothing that would take away from a good days' golfing enjoyment.

Now, I should add there is always a nice relaxed and chilled atmosphere around the Clubhouse but I didn't know they also had a Pro shop the size of a small warehouse. Packed to the rafters of golfing goodies.

Needless to say, I look forward to going back and playing both courses again soon, and on spending more time in the Pro shop!

Beautiful, stunning, sublime BUT...

I had the pleasure of being invited to play Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club recently, and thoroughly enjoyed the true test the course gave me!

Royal Cinque Ports GC is only a few steps from the host to this year's OPEN at Royal st. Georges and both clubs, along with Princes' make up the holy trinity of courses in Sandwich, on the Kent coast.

Now the good news is I did bother to read the club website before attending, so I knew I would have to 'don' knee-length socks if I were to wear shorts on a warm summer's day.

However, despite wearing long socks for the first time since Junior school, I didn't look quite as ridiculous as I thought I would (although others may disagree!)

So to the course...

This is, without doubt, as good a course I have played ANYWHERE!

The greens are immaculate and interesting (one was more akin to a skateboard park than a golf green!), they are hard to read and QUICK!

The tee boxes, fairways, and run-off areas are exceptional and a testament to the Greenkeepers.

Tee to green the front nine might seems bland at times, but this is links golf and if you can avoid the long grass, stay straight, take into account the wind and the borrows, you'll have a brilliant day.

We played the back nine in glorious amber twilight (we started at 5pm), and the back nine displayed their undulating characteristics beautifully.

Holes 14-18 are particularly stunning with fairways at times looking like mogul fields on a ski resort, with long shadows accentuating the terrain even further.

But, if you miss 8 out of 18 fairways (as I did) be prepared for a frustrating day. That said, take my advice, if you lose a ball, DONT look for it, unless you have a VERY good idea where it is. The fescue here is punishing, time spent looking for golf balls will only irritate you more. Just take your medicine and move on.

Now to the price, the standard green fee here is circa £180 per round. This is mainly designed to keep the riff-raff away, and as the US and Japanese tourists are more than happy to pay this figure, why shouldn't the club charge this.

I would happily pay £60-70 to play here if the sunshine was guaranteed, as I consider it a treat to play on this type of links course, but I would feel short-changed if the rain fell and the wind blew.

So, all in all, a behemoth of a golf course, a delighted to play, and one every golfer of circa 18 handicap (or less) would enjoy, but if you're a high handicapper, look elsewhere, this place will eat you up.

If get the chance, just once, play this course!

Pretty mature parkland course...

Playing for the first time at Sedlescombe Golf Club based in the area of Battle and Hastings, there is no need to tell you, this is an area of some historic importance, not to mention great beauty...

Firstly, on arrival, you can see this is a busy golf course. A brand new modern Clubhouse greets you with a large patio area (that wouldn't be out of place in Spain) with table service and friendly staff and a great mixed menu.

Visiting in the middle of the British summer, you can never really predict either the weather or your game but having read only good things about this course, I was excited to see what this club (now under new management from 2019) was going to be like...

Now I'll get my excuses out of the way straight away, Sedlescombe Golf Club played host to the PGA Sussex Championship the week before our visit, so the rough had been grown up and the greens top-dressed, so I wasn't expecting to play to my handicap and I was right.

This is a course that you need to study, learn and think about. If you like to blast a driver down every fairway, forget it, at Sedlescombe you require patience and accuracy.

Having played another local seaside course the day before, what a contrast this would prove to be. This course is a mature, dense, and beautiful parkland course and there is not a sound to be heard except the larks and the cuckoos.

And on speaking with members, some of whom referred to the course as 'Ditch-combe', I would advise buying a course planner if you’re playing here for the first time.

With tight tree-lined fairways, and in places some very small greens, this is a course I could play again, and again, and again. It is my kind of course.

Every hole is different, some elevated tees, some sunken greens, some very reachable Par 4's, and some seriously testing Par 5's. Oh and plenty of water. Yep, this course just about has it all.

The stand-out holes for me were the 337 yard 8th and the 232 yard 10th, but I'll also mention the dog-leg 15th to a tiny hidden green surrounded by tall trees, if you make this in two you are a good golfer.

If I had any criticism (and I am nit-picking now), the rough needs another cut now the PGA's have gone, and I would say the greens could be a little better.

However, judging by the number of works going on around the course, this is something they are already working on. I have no doubt that this will be the leading course in the area within a few years.

Membership is very reasonably priced too at only £900 pa, very affordable when you compared with some of the more established clubs in the region.

There is a Hotel on site too, so you have the option of completely immersing yourself in golf for a few days without leaving the venue.

Lastly, the club also offers a great driving range on-site for those wanting to practice before their round, and in the clubhouse, the changing rooms are modern, clean with all the amenities you would expect including good disabled facilities.

In summary, I REALLY liked this course.

It's clear the new owners (who have also had to battle with COVID) have the ambition to make this one of the best golf facilities on the south coast, providing a relaxed 'inclusive' atmosphere and I am already looking forward to returning soon!

Good BUT could be better...

This was my first visit to The Darenth Golf Club (just of M25, Jct 3 in Kent) and on arrival, you first notice a very modern clubhouse, clean and new paths and welcoming staff...

However, whilst it's always nice to play a course you've never played before it's also interesting to see how much time and effort has been put into the overall golf experience for the visitor by the club.

So with the friendly face in the Pro shop, I was expecting good things from the course...

The Par 72 design is both a good test and well laid out. There are some very pretty Par 3's and some long Par 4 but more than enough to enjoy for all, in this parkland setting.

But, given the club has had nobody playing on it for three months (this was the first week in April 2020 after lockdown) thus giving the club plenty of opportunities to regenerate the course, I was somewhat disappointed to find patchy greens, no yellow tees at all and in places, unkept tee boxes.

I would also comment that many of the greens had little bumps and tweaks that made the greens hard to predict.

Don't get me wrong, this course is very pleasant, with some expansive fairways, tight greens, and nice vistas of the valley the course runs through, but why spend all that money on a lovely clubhouse and not have your greenkeepers work the course?

In addition, as is often the way with a 'members club', there was little signage to help the visitor and at times we had no idea where we were going next?!

All of this should not take anything away from the course as a whole, but I think this could be a great little course with not much more needing doing to it, therefore making it a 'great' venue.

That said, I will gladly return in the summer months to try the course again, as I have no doubt some warm spring weather will help the course no end.

I have had Mannings Heath Golf Club on my radar for many years and when invited to play with a TSGer and Mannings Heath Golf Club member (Tony Moss), I jumped at the chance...

The Clubhouse is very impressive and has a relaxed and sumptuous oldie/worldy atmosphere, but the patio area is what makes this place stand out!

you can sit here after your round and enjoy the surroundings, on lovely garden furniture and with waitress service.

Now to the Manning Heath Golf Course - The Waterfall

On first sight, the tee view on the first hole gives you a good indication of what is to come. A Par 4, downhill, then uphill, to a flat protected green (which were all excellent).

The course is full of undulations but even though I had walked nearly 10k by the end of my round, it didn't feel like it was hilly whilst we were playing. Although I felt it the next day... I guess this is because all the holes vary so differently.

A Parkland course, this track favours the lower handicapper, I think you will struggle if you're more than 20.0.

There are some superb holes though and beautifully maintained, including two of only three VERY pretty par 3's.

All the tee boxes and bunkers were in excellent condition and raked every morning, despite COVID.

Would I return, definitely!

BUT... whilst the Guest fee at £30 is very reasonable, I don't believe the Visitor fee of £65 is fair. Maybe £45 at a push but no more.

However, this is very much a members' course, so I suspect they aren't targeting the 'nomadic' golfer, and that price, is maybe to deter some.

Great little course...

Played here with John Barber in May 2020 and had a great day!

Parkland course, with easy layout and wide fairways. We played on a windy day but didn't spoil our fun.

As a council course, it's never going to be Wentworth and yes the greens were fluffy, BUT I just really enjoyed the walk.

Lots of twists and turns, beautiful mature trees and some superb Par 3's

Will definitely go back here!

Great layout....

Played here on a cool summers' day and thoroughly enjoyed the course!

Nestled in Surrey Downs in South London, the clubhouse is traditional (if not a little scruffy in places), however, all the staff were friendly and welcoming.

The course is parkland in terrain and the layout is a mixture of sloping Par 4's and tight Par 3's.

It had been suggested that Addington Court was a little tired but on the contrary, I think this course is a great challenge and whilst not overly long, you can be caught out be well-positioned bunkers and sloping greens.

It could be argued that the fairways need some TLC but considering this was August, I would expect some browning of the short stuff.

In short, I really enjoyed the course and I think the venue will make for a great TSG Matchplay final, as the course can be played either sensibly or aggressively.

The choice is yours...

I will definitely be playing the course again!

Great little course...

Don't know why I hadn't heard of this course before being invited to play by a fellow TSGer.

The Clubhouse is big and airey and has a nice patio area to enjoy food and drinks.

The course is very flat so makes for a pleasant easy round. However, it's a bit quirky too. The layout starts with the 1st hole outside the clubhouse but then you cross the main road to reach holes 2-17. You then cross again to play the 18th hole.

Holes 2-17 are all different and very pretty and praised should go to the Greenkeepers for how well the course is presented.

Is the course difficult? No Will it test you? Yes.

Greens are undulating but true and well maintained.

Staff were friendly and made us welcome. Would have no hesitation in returning here again soon.

Finally played here on a warm spring day. Nice location close to M25 and pleasant and airy clubhouse.

However, the biggest accolade has to go to the man behind the counter, what a wonderfully warm welcome and big smile - its goes a long way for the visitor!

Otherwise, nice course, fairly benign but I am sure it will bite if the wind blows. Well looked after fairways and greens.

Not to hilly, although can leave you puffing if your not golf fit - which I wasn't.

Parkland in layout and style, I will definitely be returning!

You will be tested...

Played here in Grip Par Open in aid of British Inclusive Golf charity... superb course, great food and rooms in the hotel and beautiful views across Ribble Valley...but if you like playing off flat lies, this is NOT the course for you!

However, if you like a challenge, beautiful scenery (that I will remember for a long time) and manicured fairways you'll love it. Alas, I didn't break 100 on either day here but I can't blame the course... leave your Driver in the car and play conservatively. The only negative here is the Greens, can't really dress it up any other way...but they need some love and water.

That said, they are suffering drought-like conditions at the moment so I am sure they are doing the best they can, in difficult circumstances... would definitely go back!

Mature course....

Set not far from the M25, and close to Westerham (Jct 5), this course intrigued me....

Firstly, there is real provence to this course as it dates back to the late 1890's and there is a real sense of history to the Clubhouse. Traditional, cosy but clean and fresh.

Only a nine-hole course (you play from different tees on the back nine!) but it is very tight (no need for a Driver here!) and you will need to plot your way around. Some of the holes will intimidate you due to the narrow tree-lined fairway - in parts, it reminded me of Wentworth - seriously!

All the green were in good condition, the fairways are excellent too. My only complaint is that £4.50 for bacon sandwich is silly money.

That said, I will return and as a TSG Club Partner, the rates are very reasonable! Give it a try!

Great little course...

Played here as a guest and very impressed with this course. Yes, its only 9 holes but the centre also boasts a superb, modern and airy Clubhouse and 22 bay driving range. Good food and good service...and there is strict 'zero' dress code! The course itself is a good combination of good Par 4's and tricky Par 3's and the greens are as good as any other in the area. There are also plans to improve the facilities further with an adventure golf centre being added shortly.

If you're looking for a short course, that's a good test and fun - give it a try!

Loved it...

Played here ahead of TSG OPEN in July and fell in love with the course - despite not scoring at all well.....

This course is tucked away in the Surrey Hills near Woldingham and is just 7-8 mins from the M25 (jct 6). The Clubhouse is traditional but has a very 'homely' feel and all the staff couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome. Good breakfast and drinks over-looking the 18th green were very pleasant.

The course is parkland and is adorned with matured trees and some very pretty fauna and it was a delight to see so many greenkeepers out on the course (I counted at least four during our round!) Many of the fairways a sloping one way or the other so while fairly short in length, don't be fooled, you will face a real test.

Signature hole has to be the Par 3 ninth and I clearly played it all wrong but my playing partnered got the Par. It is 160 yards and drops to a sloping green among the trees - a superb hole! However, no one hole is the same and if this course was closer to me, I would be playing it every month.

The green had just been 'graded' but I suspect they will be VERY quick in the summer. They are a few hills to climb, so some may need a buggy but I don't think the 'fit & agile' among you will struggle at all. This will be a great venue for the 2018 TSG OPEN 2018!

They also have some superb midweek deals including Monday Golf for less around £15 and I would happily pay double that!!

I like the course but overpriced...

This course is quirky and a little rough round the edges but I really enjoyed the layout of the course and the terrain - heathland-ish.

One thing to note, is I've never stood on the tyee to find three horses blocking my path to the fairway but luckily no animals were hurt during my round.

The course is flat and plays longer than you think. In fact, if it were not for the bunkers having very little sand in them, I would have given a much better score.

However, whilst I know we are spoilt for great green fee deals in Essex, £30 for this course on a Bank Holiday Monday mid morning is too much - £25 would be a fair price.

That said, the staff were all fun and friendly, so would play again if there was a deal on!

Pretty Course but...

Can't find much fault in this course! It's pretty, well-maintained course and an easy walk (unless its 30C!). Parkland in layout there is some interesting holes but also some fairly benign holes. The Clubhouse bar is large and airy and the food was good.

However... I do have two comments:

1 - If you are going to welcome visitors to your club, don't tell them off for not following clubs rules as soon as they walk through the door. Maybe say 'hello' first (e.g. collars in clubhouse etc)

2. If you are going to have a bar where you want golfers to be able to relax after a round (and spend money!) and there is no golf shoes allowed rule, perhaps have a spike carpet a meter wide, so at least we can get from the balcony to the bar!

If I hadn't been staying overnight - I would have gone elsewhere.

Overall an OK experience, would I return, probably not as its a long way from home!

Played here in the Limbcare Charity Golf day and really enjoyed the course...

Based close to the famous Horse Racing venue, the club is well established and welcoming.

Excellent tee boxes, lush fairways, flat greens....whats not to like.

Parkland in design and layout, if I lived closer I would be happy to play here again and again.

Cheap & Cheerful....

Played here a few years back and decided it was time to revisit....

Just a few miles north of the A12 (Witham) and about 30 mins fromm M25, this little parkland course has a welcoming clubhouse. Barn like in design, the clubhouse also offers a roomy outside decking area, overlooking the 18th green, should you wish to enjoy a drink in the sunshine after your round.

The course begins with a dog-leg Par 5 and the hole sets the tone for the rest of your round. Undulating fairways (that need cutting), some very playable Par 3s and some testing shorter Par 4s, overall I liked this course.

The Greens are small and in places very poor (but I understand the owners are seeking advice on how this can be improved) but alas too many crow holes for my liking.

As Speedy suggests, this course is never going to win any awards for its Tee boxes and Greens, However, if you are looking for a cheap round of golf (£12 on a Sat am), this is the place for you.

Despite my previous visit, I could not remember any of the course, so for me, it was like paying it again for the first time.

The front nine is a bit scruffy in places but the course improves in layout and quality as you go round. Actually, I think this course could be very good, it just needs some TLC.

All the staff are friendly and the bacon sandwich was excellent but at £4 I would expect it to be!

There is also a Pitch & Putt 9 hole course, where they also play footgolf.

As such, this is a club that is designed to serve the local community, more than visitors but if you want an affordable round of golf and don't mind if the course is a little worn in places, give it a go.

I would certainly return but would like to see some improvements made first.

Cracking little links course...

So after many failed attempts to visit this course, I finally committed to a date in order that Mr.Duffy (TSG member) could show me the delights of his local golf club.

Littlehampton is set on the West Sussex Coast and it a real test.

Of course, I was expecting some tough conditions but nothing to what we to face on the day. 30+ mph winds, drizzle, rain, cold and more wind. Its no surprise that it was a 5 hour round but I did feel a sense of achievement having not let the elements beat us.

Despite this, I loved the course! Very flat, not overly long but greens were good, fairways were well kept and the course is a pleasure to play but don't forget the weather.

There are some great Par 3's and 4's on the course, some hard to reach and many surrounded by bunkers and gorse, so pick your spots. However, on a calm day, you could really attack the greens.

The Clubhouse has a typical seaside feel and the sound of the masts clanking from the neighbouring marina reminds you that you on the coast.

Traditional in look and feel, we could not order food as it was past 5pm when we finished and our cars were the only ones left in the car park but I will put this down to the weather and anyone remotely sane would be tucked up at home with a hot toddy.

Great Putting and practice areas and a nice friendly Pro shop were enough for me to want to return.... and I have no doubt Mr.Duffy will welcome any of us at his club - just check the forecast before leaving home!

Great little golf course BUT.....

Played here recently with member Roger Hurcombe and found the course to be a really good test with no two holes the same...

The course is set in mature parkland and is fairly short but there are a few ditches and trees to make you think about your ball placement. The greens aren't the best you will play on and there are signs of wear and tear on them but this course could be a great course if only there was a little TLC given.

There are plans for an improved range but this is under construction, hence the low score I have given to the practice facilities.

However, when it comes to service, like many golf clubs, they have not only let their visitors down but also their members with silly things...

The Clubhouse is modern and clean, although there were few people around (on sat pm) to know how busy the club was.However, the bar staff were at best welcoming and polite but at worst incompetent. The food took over 30 mins to arrive and even then they had forgotten the complete order and I had to take the food that was ready, with me on the course.

The Pro-shop staff were short and abrupt (remember I was with a member!). No smile, no offer to show you where things were, in fact, even asking for a scorecard felt like I had committed a cardinal sin. Alas, there was no commitment to service at all.

However, when all said and done I did enjoy the course and the day and Mr.Hurcombe was a great host!

Ballards Gore Golf & Country Club

Pleasant but....

Another one of the Essex courses ticked off my list and whilst I enjoyed my round here, would I rush back? Hmmm...

The course is Parkland and reasonably maintained. However, I don't think it would be unfair to say that the course is a little scruffy in places. Tee boxes vary from very good to poor.

The course is VERY flat and plays quite long but the greens are fair but perhaps a bit fluffy, adequate but perhaps a little slow.

There are some nice holes on the course plus the odd dog-leg and water to navigate. Overall, there is nothing to dislike about this course and there is some lovely mature trees and water to enjoy. However, the problem with this course is that it's not easy to reach...

It's way off the beaten track (35m+ from M25) and whilst the staff were all friendly, welcoming, the food very reasonably priced (Only £2.25 for an egg and sausage bagette!) I don't think there is enough here to get me coming back time after time.

Worth a visit if you are in the area but not sure I would make a special journey to visit course again.

The Cambridgeshire Golf Club

A hidden treasure...

Played here on a last minute 7am tee time in the height of the UK Summer heatwave (30c+) and was very impressed.....

Two minutes from the M11 this course is both accessible and affordable and is well worth the visit if you aren't local.

The course has a great layout with plenty to keep you tested and set in a great parkland area of what is a traditionally flat area. The first few holes are flat but with well-placed bunkers to make you place your shots.

Then the course starts to twist and turn....

A mixture of some nice Par 3's and 4's, the pin positions were testing but the most impressive part of this course was the quality of the greens

They are ALL in superb condition (I am told they were ironed the week before for the Club Championship - lucky us!) and all the tee boxes and in good condition too.

Friendly Pro-shop, and although as this is part of a hotel, a word of advice, don't drink in the hotel bar (£4 for a pint of diet coke!) drink in the Golf Club Bar - apparently, it's cheaper!!

I liked this course - A lot!

Can't wait to go back....

A wonderful memory of the great man....

So the first thing you notice on the card as you make your way to the first tee is that this is like no other course you’ve been too. Yes, it was Seve’s insistence that there should be an even mix of par threes, fours and fives, and that no two consecutive holes should play to the same par... and it works!

The first hole starts with a pretty Par 3 to ease you into your round but note, you are playing across water. Just the first of 14th holes on the course that include water in their layout. You’ve been warned. The holes then rotate with a Par 4, Par 5 returning to a Par 3 again, and so on. Surprisingly, this doesn’t break your flow, but actually, compliments your play.

Of course, the tee boxes are perfect. Of course, the greens are as good as you play anywhere in the area.

And yes, the rough is long, forcing you to play the kind of shot Seve would want you to.

The standout holes:

Hole 3 – A pretty 140 yards Par 3 (across water) a big flat green to give you a chance

Hole 7 – Another inspiring 118 yard Par 3 that finishes on an island green (across water – again!)

Hole 9 – An uphill 400+ yard Par 4 flanked by mature trees and a well-protected green

Hole 11 – A 500+ yard straight Par 5, but leave enough room to clear the centred oak in the approach to the green

Hole 13 – A short tee shot to the turn and long 3 wood, gives you a birdie chance but go long off the tee and you’ll be in trouble.

Hole 15 – An ascending fairway with a right dog-leg that invites you to hit an expansive flat green. Another birdie opportunity.

Hole 18 – A good drive on this 365 yard Par 4 will tempt you to go for the green….but beware of the ‘S’ shaped water feature, as you’ll need to be pinpoint accurate if you want to avoid a bogey.

This hole provides a superb vista for those watching you finish in the clubhouse.

Seve clearly enjoyed designing golf course after his retirement from the game and although I am sure he would have preferred to have continued playing, this course allows his name to live on for generations.

We are very lucky to have this memory of him!

Loved it!!

Just when you think you've played every kind of golf course, along comes one that surprises you....this course is like no other I've played!

If you like to smack a driver 300+ yards when you play or if you have a power fade, this is not the course for you but if you like 'thinking' your way round, have a good short game - you'll love it.

Nestled on the edge of the famous Epping Forest, this course winds its way through parkland with narrow fairways and small greens but note, 70% off the holes favour the 'draw'. Alas, something I don't possess.

At only just over 5000 yards, leave the driver at home and enjoy laying up and flying in the flop shots.

Otherwise, friendly staff, a big veranda that overlooks the 18th and a small but well-stocked Pro shop makes for a good golfing experience.

I'll definitely be back....but without the Driver!

Nice course but a little pricey.....

Had the pleasure of playing a number of courses in this area and none disappoint! The selling point at Seaford (not to be confused with Seaford Head GC) is the greens - they were stunning and true. The course is inland but with lovely sea views, so watch out for a good stiff breeze as you play your way round....

The front nine is the tighter of the two nines with most holes flanked by yellow heather(it was May) and bluebells in abundance. However, the back nine opens out more but you are still required to stay straight as a missed fairways could cost you heavily.

The Clubhouse was bright and cheerful but nothing special (has that seaside feel to it) and breakfast was adequate but the staff more than friendly.

Not sure I would rush back as I would choose Seaford Head and East Brighton over this club, mainly on price rather than quality. £35 on a Saturday at noon - a little rich for my liking!

Nice little course....

Had the pleasure of playing here on one of Mark Crane's golf day and had a great time!

To be fair, I wasn't expecting much as it was described as a 'council' course and yet on arrival, I was pleasantly surprised....

What I liked about the course was that nearly every hole is different. Some nice Par 3's and some testing Par 4's.

The fairways undulate but you're never out of breath and the greens are true and all tee boxes were well maintained.

The only downside is there are places on the course that are quite close to the M20 motorway but this doesn't spoil the fun.

A smallish clubhouse with friendly staff and good food.

Would be happy to recommend to anyone looking for a pretty and testing course.

All together - very average...

Radlett GC (formerly Elstree) is a reasonably pleasant course with a couple of good holes but overall I was left a little underwhelmed...

OK, so I played here in December on a cold damp day but saw enough to know there's not a great deal to shout about here. A bit 'Up and Down' in places, there nothing to really to complain about but equally nothing to rave about either. The greens were OK, the fairways adequate and the tee boxes average.

Couldn't comment on Pro shop as it was closed by 2pm(!) Clubhouse and Bar is modern and no doubts has good views of the 18th, 11th and 1st but this too was closed at 2pm(!).

We made do, by finding a local pub for a post-round drink but would have preferred to spend my money at the club.

A little pricey at £25 (Sunday at 12noon in Dec!!) so can't say I'll be rushing back!

Lives up to its name...

I've been keen to play Redlibbets for some time and whilst the Autumn is not always the best time to a review a course..... in this case, it was the perfect time!

Tucked away in the Kent countryside, the approach to the clubhouse meanders through the course to the spacious car park. Still relatively new (Est. in 90's) the clubhouse is big and airy and gives you superb views of the course.

The first hole is a relatively short Par 4 but as a blind shot it is still a test. The course then snakes through rich and varied woodland with no two holes the same. The course is a combination of some testing Par 3's and well designed Par 4's. The course loops back to the clubhouse before heading out again in the opposite direction, meaning no two views of the course are ever the same.

And despite the damp conditions all the greens were lightening quick. In fact, many of the greens are small and require some accuracy to score well, so practice your chipping before starting

However, the real delight of this course its is panoramic views around the valley and the brilliant red and oranges trees that flank each and every fairway. At this team of year, they are a truly spectacular sight, that (at times) will suggest you could be in Canada or the Rocky mountains.

Coupled with the warm and generous welcome at the bar (a smile goes a long way!), and with the members (and Mens' Captain) keen to chat and welcome us, many clubs could learn from this approach.

The Pro-shop was equally welcoming and well stocked and with some great offers to match any online store, this is a club I will certainly be returning to.

The only negative to the day was the onslaught of some heavy rain that meant we missed the last three holes but having walked them to reach the clubhouse, I have no doubt they would only add to your enjoyment.

Give this club a try, you won't be disappointed!

Great course...

We saved this course for the final day giving us plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the clubhouse, situated in the main Inter-continental Hotel building. The staff were all very friendly and the service excellent.

After meeting with Chris Ahern (Commercial Director), he quickly gave us a tour of the facilities and gave us some pointers on how to enjoy the course.

The atmosphere here is very different to the other course and it has much more of a ’local club’ feel about it.

The first tee situated less than a few yards from the clubhouse and offers you a simple Par 4 start but note the fairway doesn’t start for 150 yards, but don’t worry, the sandy fairway is plenty good enough to play from.

The course then meanders around three or four loops, each returning to the main Clubhouse.

The course is flat and has a layout that nicely rotates between Par 3’, 4’s and 5’s. This means you could play it again and again without getting bored.

Upon reaching the back nine, water comes into play with holes 11, 12 and 13 circling a very pleasant reed lined lake. Tricky if you tend to fade the ball as all holes are left to right but equally challenging to those that draw the ball, as each hole is also flanked by apartments.

Having navigated these holes, you then return to a parkland style finish with the 18th positioning you back at the main clubhouse.

The only negative we could aim at this course is that it looks a little tired in places but that comes from the fact that is the most played course in the group. However, this course is much shorter than the others and suits all levels of player.

The food in the clubhouse is very good and the club-sandwich is to die for!

All in all, we liked this course and we would happily return.

Overpriced but a true test...

This course is seen as the ‘jewel in the crown’ within the group. It is situated an hours’ drive from Mar Menor but is easy to find, thanks to the great directions given to us by the Pro-shop.

At first you are slightly disorientated on arrival as the course is within the walls of the residential area, however once this hurdle was navigated, you then arrive at an unassuming car park that’s leads to The Clubhouse.

Wow! You know you are a course that has not only been designed by Mr. Nicklaus but that it has been sculptured beautifully into the landscape. I can only imagine how many hours the green keepers spend attending to all the tee boxes alone.

The course is long (6500+ meters) but don’t be put off, most of the fairways are wide and forgiving but watch out for the wind. The course is built in a valley are when it blows, it really blows.

The Clubhouse is modern but small and doesn’t match the surrounding but I believe this is a temporary structure and will be replaced by one much grander in style, like the rest in the group. There is a fantastic open air range to hone your game before heading out.

The first three or four holes are a delight, undulating fairways, bunker ridden par 3’s but once you get to past these, the course starts to stretch out (don’t think I hit a short iron into a green until the back nine!).

Whilst the fairways are brown and barren (it is Spain), there is a good combination of left and right aligned holes. These contrast the greens are rich dark green and firm (i.e. very difficult to land your ball on).

Most of greens have plenty of breaks and borrows, so don’t expect to leave without at least some 3-Putts on your card.

Realistically this course is built for low handicappers (10 and below), so don’t be disappointed if you struggle to score well. Just enjoy the course, and the views and enjoy it in the manner in which ‘Jack’ would want you to.

Before leaving our base, we had been told only good things about this course. This can sometimes lead to disappointment but in this case, no chance – we loved this course.

On arrival, you are greeted by a very modern and spacious clubhouse with a large patio-ed area to enjoy a pre (or post)round drink. This overlooks the 18th green and is high enough to enjoy a welcome light breeze. There is an open air practice area and balls are only a few Euros for a basket of balls.

As you walk to the first, you immediately know you will enjoy the day. The vast wide fairway (with strategically placed bunkers) is beautiful with a mountainous backdrop that wouldn’t look out of place in the Arizona desert. The tee boxes again were very good and well tended to and cleared marked for all levels of golfer.

As we made our way around we commented on how well the course was designed and that every hole provides you with a different challenge. Ranging from short-ish Par 4 to tempt you to expansive 450 m+ Par 5’s, this course has something for everyone.

The course twists and turns with slight inclines and drops that won’t leave you out of breathe. However, there are plenty of bunkers for you to find (on one hole we counted 10) so you will need to think your way around here.

So to the signature hole: It does take a little effort to walk to the elevated 11th tee, that gives you a panoramic view for miles around. However, once you’ve taken in the view, you’re then faced with teeing off over rocks and on to the fairway 50ft below, where bunker will catch a wayward shot – brilliant!

The greens here were very good. Not too firm that you can’t land on them but quick enough to get you thinking. All were true. Whilst water is not the main feature here, the back nine does require plotting your way around some pretty and challenging water but this all adds to the variety of holes.

Finishing the day back on the patio area, we enjoyed some great service, good food and a refreshing drink, whilst we discussed the ups (there were no downs) of both the course and its layout. We will definitely be returning to this course again.

Cottesmore Golf Club

Underwhelming...

Had been really looking forward to playing here but overall was left a little underwhelmed...

At first glance the course looks very pretty with wide fairways and rolling countryside. The first tee boxes were tidy but sadly these got progressively scruffier as we made our way round.

The course itself feels very disorientating (with some long walks between tees) and I never felt like I really knew were I was on the course at any one time (Perhaps its one of those courses that you have to play a few times!).

That said, its fairly typical that a club never looks at itself in the way visitors do. I felt the signage in and around the course to be poor too and despite the boards on each tee showing you the hole layout - on one occasion, it felt like it completely contradicted the 'actual' hole lay out.

Now to the greens... I believe there was a lot of rain the day before but this should not make for heavily sodden greens and tee boxes if they drain properly. In some cases the greens was also in poor condition, bare and uneven. However, the ones that were good - we're very good.

All the above aside, there are some VERY good holes on this course, notably the Par 5 10th hole/green and the Par 3 17th hole.

Food was good and service adequate but not sure I'll be rushing back here, which is a shame as I think this course could be REALLY good!

Played here on the Kirstie Wilson Memorial Golf Day and thoroughly enjoyed the event....

Much credit goes to Gary who put on a fantastic day with a friendly bunch of golfers (and TSGers).

The course is open to the elements and subject to the strong winds blowing off the Thames Estuary but don't be put off, this course is great fun to play.

There's plenty to enjoy for the high and medium handicappers and whilst it's not Wentworth, it's well worth the trip.

All the staff were friendly and food tasty.

And of course, all in a very good cause - I would encourage ALL TSGers to support this day in the future!

Friendly Club but overpriced....

Took a last minute opportunity to play this course on a Tuesday pm... and fell in love with it.

Lovely parkland course, with sweeping fairways, great expansive greens, good tee boxes and a good variance of holes. Actually no, it has a GREAT variance of holes.

The club boasts it is the 'friendliest golf club in Surrey' and apart from the PRO(!), they are right. All the Bar staff were very welcoming and good fun.

It's a little dated in the clubhouse and the food was OK (-ish), check out the website(!).... but it's the course that will keep you coming back.

My only gripe was that I feel Once again a £40 fee (mid-week pm!!) is over-priced but then I guess this is reflected in the fact the course was empty.

Will return once I find a discount code!

Loved this course....

Another one on the bucket list ticked off.... I had visited Pine Ridge without playing a few times, so was looking forward to playing here and I wasn't disappointed!

Without doubt a superb layout through pine trees and top notch fairways, I would rate it as highly as the lesser Wentworth courses (Edinburgh & The East!), yes it's that pretty!

All the tee boxes and presented well and although the greens were fluffy in places on the day we played, I am sure they could be deadly on medal days.

However, I one negative, £38 here on a Sunday pm is a bit heavy. However, luckily this is a TSG Preferred course, so only £32 for TSGers.

Will definitely be back soon!

Some lovely holes....

The course is considered the lesser of the Pestana Group courses in The Algarve and sadly the truth is.... it probably is!

Don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic holes on this course, but the overall impression is that it is a little tired and unkept.

The course is fine and fun to play and there is plenty here for the average handicapper to enjoy, including raised tees, pretty lakes, tricky borrows, fun Par 3's, but compared to the other courses in the area, it's just not up there and didn't do it for me.

The greens are good and the tee boxes well maintained and the reception staff were friendly. However, The Clubhouse is small and 'smelly', as such we chose not to eat here, instead heading back to the more salubrious surroundings at Gramacho.

Nice to add another course to the list but won't be rushing back!

The Home of The Ryder Cup.......

I stumbled across this course recently and was so inspired by the history, I thought I should play it before the winter sets in....

The first thing to note is how friendly everyone is at the club. On entrance to the Clubhouse, I was immediately greeted by friendly staff, who were quick to tell me where everything was - many other clubs could learn from this approach.

The Clubhouse is steeped in history and the reference to the once great 'Samuel Ryder' is everywhere. This was his home course and the agreement between himself, James Braid, Henry Taylor and Harry Vardon is displayed on the wall, setting out the rules of The Ryder Cup, along with the an 'almost' replica of the great trophy - The Samuel Ryder Cup - played by the members each year.

The course is beautifully presented and from standing on the first tee, you know the ground staff clearly care about the course:

The first few holes break you in gently and allowing you to get you warmed up with shortish but protected greens - which is when you know its going to be a good course. All the greens are in great condition and flat and true.

The rest of the course meanders through pretty woodland but surprising there is enough room on each fairway that good shots are rewarded. On the whole, the course is fairly flat but equally you will find yourself breaking into a sweat on the odd incline/decline from time to time.

My only complaint would be that there are only three Par 3's (rather than the normal four) and as such you don't get to test your short game (from the tee) that often.

I mustn't forget to mention some of the great views (not promoted well enough on their website) including the superb 11th Par 5, which displays 'The Abbey' in all its glory. Ps. Verulam is the roman name for the city of St.Albans.

Finally, it's worth noting that we played at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon and we had the course to ourselves. We finished at 4.30pm (Yes, 3 1/2 hours!!) and that was with a four-ball ahead of our two-ball, who we never caught!

All in all, a great clubhouse, a great course and great history - I can see this being a regular on the TSG rota. Looking forward to going back already!

Great location for Londoners....

Not sure I can add much to what Alan and Brigitte have already said....

A very tight and compact course meaning you can get around pretty quickly. The greens are fast and true and the fairways in places are as good as I've played on anywhere.

The clubhouse is steeped in tradition and history and there is no stuffiness to be heard. The staff were all friendly and accommodating.

A little pricey for some TSGers at £80/90 around but I am told it is empty at weekend afternoons, which would suggest they could lower this fee for visitors.

However, it's a very well maintained course and one I look forward to playing again!

Top Notch!

So, when there's a course on your bucket list and you arrange to play there, there is often a worry that you will be disappointed, not here, this course is superb! The layout meanders through rich, dense woodland and is a real test of golf for anyone.The first hole is a good indicator for the rest of the course, with a tight fairways and a quick green and it had been raining hard for few days.

Once past the second hole and over the first ridge, you are met with a beautiful and expanse of fairways, whereby you could easily be forgiven for thinking you are in Switzerland (seriously!). The next 'vista' is one I will remember for the rest of my golfing life.... we climbed to the white tees to see the view, not only of the fairway 100ft below but right across Hampshire and the New Forest. A view only matched in the UK by the 18th at Seaford Head. My oh my, I will be talking about that view for months, if not years! The rest of the course would not be out of place at either The Grove, Foxhills, Wentworth or Brocket Hall. it is excellent.

Designed by Peter Alliss and managed by his son Henry, you can a lot of love has been put into the course. However, the complex is as much a Hotel/Wedding venue as a golf venue, so don't expect to see thousands of excited golfers walking around (a la The Belfry) but you will be mingling with the odd 'outsider' but not enough to spoil your fun.

The Hotel itself is more than adequate but seems to suffer from an identity crisis, it's not sure whether it's a wedding venue/spa/nightclub or a golfers home from home.... I suspect the latter makes more money. However, for a four star hotel, I would expect some air conditioning in the rooms or the restaurant - I was sweating while eating my breakfast and not from too much alcohol the night before(?!). That said, none of the above should detract from what is a fantastic place to play golf and I look forward to playing there again sometime soon!

Deangate Ridge Golf Club

Nice course, let down by the greens...

First things first, I played here as part of Mark Crane's Celebrity Golf Day and as posted in the forum, this is a great day out and all down to Mark and his superb organisational skills.

However, that said, what about the course....

I liked it. The course meanders through parkland terrain with some hills to negotiate but nothing that will leave you that out of breath. The greens are flat and true BUT there are some nasty cracks and poor quality grass on some.

The Par 3's are a good challenge and there is plenty of good holes to keep you occupied and some I really liked.

The clubhouse staff were all very friendly and the food and drinks at the bar were very reasonable priced. The food itself was very good!

Would I rush back? No. There are too many other courses, still to visit. Would I play there again? Certainly and look forward to joining Mark and his crew there again next year!

Well, Well, well, after all these years of hearing everyone talk about Seaford Head, I finally get to play it... and it was worth the wait!

What a great course. OK it's short but it's a real test of golf.

Spectacular views, the white cliffs, quick greens, pleasant and friendly staff, a brand new modern clubhouse serving good food and the sun shone too.

Many courses get talked up and you can be left disappointed (depending on how you play) but this course really benefits the straight player and there are plenty of opportunities to get your ball up and down. However, make a bad shot and you can be left wondering why you got out of bed....

I imagine it would be a different course in the wind and rain but I for one, will definitely be going back soon!

The 'Tour' took in three locations including La Finca itself, Las Ramblas and Villamartin...

Played here at VillaMarketin on day two and was disappointed. The Course is set in the middle of the town which is a little 70's looking (think ex-pat Spain) but despite its heritage, its all a little tired.

That said, its not all bad. The course is a little English looking places but there are some very good holes that will provide a great challenge for most.

The course starts with a few up and down holes but doesn't really stand out until you pass holes 6 and 7. There a few nice Par 3's along the way and some testing greens but otherwise its a bit bland.

The back nine gets a little more pretty with Villa lined fairways but overall it wouldn't be a stand out course I'd rush back to.

Staff were friendly enough and the upstairs bar area is pleasant but overall an average course in an average town - Get me back to La Finca!

Sooooo, difficult....

The 'Tour' took in three locations including La Finca itself, Las Ramblas and Villamartin...

Las Ramblas is a course I knew nothing about before arriving but wow, what a course, a course like nothing I have ever played before....

Set in dusty and rock lined countryside, this place should be renamed Las Ravines....never have seen so many in one place and so tightly bunched together. Neither have I played quite so many blind shots, dog-legs or played across so many ravines....this course is definitely the 'hardest' course I have played. Unsurprisingly, with no previous experience of the course, I didn't score well.

However, I will say this, its probably one of those courses, that the more you play it, the more you understand it and the more you want to beat it.

The greens were lightening quick (10+ on the stimp meter), perfectly manicured, with very few pitch marks, so someone is taking care of it well.

Everywhere you look there are densely wooded palm and 'olive' trees, making it for a pleasant walk but I do have a criticism.... if I am playing on a course of this quality, I do not expect to be playing out of bunkers with sand so hard, with a coarse texture, whereby I am frightened my clubs are going to be damaged but this seems to be the case on all courses in the area.

Finally, stop to have a drink in the clubhouse, its clean, airy with great views of the circular lake the numerous holes work around. The staff are friendly and good humoured and the food was good too.

Will not rush back, but only because my game is not of good enough standard to warrant the return ( would suit 10 handicaps and below better) but I would recommend you visit at least once, if not just to say you've got the T- Shirt!

La Finca Golf Resort was a well chosen choice for my first proper golf trip to Spain. The 'Tour' took in three locations including La Finca itself, Las Ramblas and Villamartin...

La Finca was promised as one of the best courses in the area and they were right. The course is set in a wide valley and from up on high, the course is a spectacular view with arid mountains providing the backdrop.

The first hole is a par 5 and begins with a tee 30ft above the fairway and this sets the tone for the day. The course meanders through well maintained fairways, across water hazards with palms trees and olive trees lining the route.

Some may consider the course hilly in places but most inclines are gradual, so you never feel out of breath. The greens are superb. Flat and true and quick!

Besides the island greens, the two tiered greens and the 'well' greens, the biggest surprise of the day was to find ourselves putting on a 'square' green, yes, a perfectly square green - brilliant!!

The clubhouse and shop aren't much to discuss and as this is on the main hotel complex, its probably not important anyway.

However, what I can say is that without exception, all the staff in this hotel were friendly, helpful, you were always met with a smile but we must thank 'Experience Manager' Raquel for this, she was excellent - not just a pretty face - as were her colleagues on reception.

My only complaint...what a shame the marshall on the course (playing himself on the day) wasn't so polite.... he can only be described as an arrogant arse - perhaps Raquel can give him some lessons on how to treat the paying public!!

All in all, a fantastic resort, modern, clean and one that I would highly recommend!

Nice course......

Had this on my list of courses to play for quite a while now, so was looking forward to the game...

On arrival we were warmly greeted by the chaps in the Pro shop who kindly gave us a quick tour to point out were everything was (a rare treat but very useful and welcoming!). We made our way into the Clubhouse and had a fairly priced breakfast which was nicely presented and well priced.

The course itself starts with some fairly benign holes but it gives you a chance to find your feet but then the course get interesting with some simple but good Par 3's and some nice dog-leg holes.

As you enter the back nine, take a look left and you'll see the original estate house, which gives the course its history. The rest of the course is fairly flat but you will need to place your ball well to score.

Parkland in design, there are plenty of signature cedar trees on the course that give the place a feeling of grandeur but this is let down by some patchy greens, as such I think the £60 Visitor rate is way over priced, I would pay £30/35 but no more.

Overall I enjoyed my round. I enjoyed the hospitality but I think it needs some more work for this to be considered a top course!

Top golf ...

Gramacho is again a great course again designed by Ronald Fream but with the help of former world no.1 and Open Champion- Nick Price.

The layout is forgiving, open and attract on the eye. The fairways are wide (mostly) and rewards the big hitter, as many green are drivable if you take the right line. But don’t be discouraged if you aren’t, good placement will also be rewarded.

After a simple start you are then tested by some undulating holes with neatly placed stone walls and palm lined fairways. The course loops away from the clubhouse and only returns back at the 18th. Again you are met with two main water features with fountains and palm shade but don’t stop to admire the course too much, you will need to concentrate to tackle the many sloping greens, where a three putt is common and four putts are not unheard of.

I really liked this course. All the tee boxes were in good condition and despite the finishing holes being in the sunset line (Why?!) I would love to play this again. If there was one point to note for the greenkeepers – I heard one of our party mention that ever Par 3 was the same distance 150m and they all required playing the same club – a fair comment, I myself used an eight iron on every one. So perhaps something to consider when laying out the course in future.

That aside, all the staff were friendly and couldn’t look after you enough and very polite. We were even greeted by owner on 1st tee!

This is what golf is all about....

Now THIS is more like it.... What a great course this is!! And in contrast to the flagship course of the Pestana Group (Vila Sol) this more than lived up to expectation. This IS why I came to play golf in The Algarve.

Designed by Ronald Fream, Vale da Pinta is considered one of the best layouts in Europe and you can see why.

Vale da Pinta is a parkland course built into the natural contours of the terrain. After a fairly easy start the course then starts to test you with undulating fairways, plateau greens, stunning views, playing off fairways like carpets. Millionaire golf!

The course has played host to the Seniors Tour in recent years and we were there the day before the regions PGA championship was taking place. There are two big lakes on the course, which invites you to challenge yourself but I would save my praise for the Par 3 -7th (165 years plateau to plateau) and the stunning approach to the Par 5 – 12th. Most greens on the course are beautifully guarded with multiple bunkers, but don’t be put off – they are full of soft, fluffy sand.

There are also works under-way around some of the course but all very subtle and it does not detract from the course in any way. I can honestly say it’s one of the best courses I have had the pleasure of playing (and I have played over 120 in total to date).

The clubhouse is cool and airy and the Pro shop staff welcoming and helpful. The views from the patio allow you to watch the golfers tee off and play the entire uphill first hole.

However, I have one criticism…. why build a course, so that the last two holes you are playing directly into the sunset? And why put the 18th green 500m away from the clubhouse leaving a steep walk back, right at the end of your round?!

This is of course nit-picking as most will visit here and take buggies and I would jump at the chance to play here again!

Vila Sol Golf Club

Nice but perhaps seen better days ....

This course is well known to me purely because another TSG member has been a member here for a number of years and spoke highly of it, so I was keen to see it for myself.

The clubhouse on first sight is welcoming although quite difficult to find your way round at first. The course itself is quite tight but not to the point of distraction or frustration and is set out in two loops of nine returning to the clubhouse. All the fairways are lined with a combination of pine, almond and fig trees, plants, flowers, lakes and streams – and it makes for a good and pleasant stroll.

However, this course, despite its history is very scruffy in places with unfinished housing, terrible fairway weeds creeping across many of the holes suggesting that it has seen better days. There is poor signage between holes (very important to the visitor). The course layout is good and the greens are fair and true but I would be lying if I said it was anything special. Of course, there are some great holes, most notably the Par threes stood out for me but I am not sure I would describe the place as PGA Tour standard.

In addition, the food served pre round was pretty poor, unless you think a deep fried soggy chicken sandwich is standard Portuguese fare. All the staff were friendly but I am not sure I will be rushing back any time soon.

Upchurch River Valley Golf Course

Enjoyable Day ....

Played here on Mark Crane's Charity Golf Day and thoroughly enjoy it!

The course is a parkland by design with undulations all around. It was a damp Nov day when we played and I expect the course would be much more playable in the summer.

There are some great holes, including some tough par 3's and a number of the tees are elevated giving both great views and some testing drives. I played very well on the front nine but struggled to hold my game on the back half.

The greens were wet but playable but you can tell they would be very quick in the dry. There was one stand out hole, the 17th. A 400+ yard par 4 into a very tight green protected by heather on one side and water on the other - it almost had a touch of Augusta about it - really!

If I had one complaint, it would be there are no directional signs between holes and no boards telling you which tee you are on - not very fair on the visitor and such a simple thing to correct.

The clubhouse is looking a little tired inside (at bit 70's) but the staff were uber friendly and the breakfast very good. The food post game was average but this didn't spoil what was a fun day!

Mark put on a great day with plenty of prizes and I would have no hesitation in returning to this course!

Niceeeeee....

Visited this course a couple of times before for meetings but never got to play until this week, why did I wait so long ... this is a really good golf course!

The course is very easy to find (just a mile from the M25) and is nestled among a superb pine tree wood. The Clubhouse itself is large and airy on the inside and has a great patio area to enjoy a post match drink too.

The course starts with a simple Par 4 downhill drive and the course then meanders through rich and pretty pine tree lined fairways. And the fairways are very well maintained and better than some greens I've played on.

Whilst fairly short in length, the course is tight in places and will test everyone. The greens are good too and the bunkers are well looked after and hold plenty of sand (rare these days).

There is a good variety of holes, some uphill, but mostly flat, some with wide fairways and some with a few dog-legs thrown in for good measure.

This is my kind of course, it rewards the steady gofler but offers a few temptations that if poorly executed will land you in trouble.

The reception staff were pleasant, although perhaps a little stoic (when will these clubs learn a smile goes a long way!) but I would happily return and look forward to playing again there very soon!

Under renovation ....

Played here this week on a corporate golf day and was impressed to see so much work going on at this once popular course...

Sadly, despite playing here as a kid, the course has been off my radar since then. However, with new owners and enthusiastic members its great to see someone putting some love back in the place.

The course itself is parkland with some undulating fairways and it has some great Par 3 holes and thought provoking dog legs. And whilst the greens are still in repair, they are are flat and true and will only get better with time.

The owner has big plans and expects to open a new clubhouse in the next few weeks and is putting on some great deals (£12 for a round and a pint) to tempt us back.

He has also secured the PGA East Anglian Open for the next five years, so its clear they are in it for the long term.

I look forward to watching the progress in the coming months/years.

Royal Hartswood update....

I thought it time to give you all an update on a course very close to my heart....

I've given this course a lot of stick over the last few years but credit to the NEW greenkeepers, they have done a fantastic job at returning this course to some its former glory.

It's always nice to see work going on around a course but in my last few visits to the course during the summer demonstrates that is just getting better and better.

OK, the green are still a little fluffy in places but they are flat and true and I look forward to seeing these improvements continue.

In my humble opinion, I think this is one of the prettiest courses I play each year. So Well done Brentwood Council for investing in their staff and this very pretty and valuable municipal course - its appreciated by those of us that pay our council tax and like to see local amenities invested in!

At best average.....

Hmmmm,it's always disappointing to write a negative course review but sadly, that's what this is!

On arrival, the place has a very tired look and this is compounded further when you head out to the course. Clearly the course has been hugely neglected in recent years, proved by the fact that despite being VERY quick, the greens are quite frankly, in terrible condition!

The course's layout whilst pleasant enough, just doesn't flow in the way that it should. I believe some of the original holes were pinched and added to the adjacent 9 hole course. In my humble opinion, this has upset the originally designed Peter Allis course. There are no particularly memorable holes, that's not to say its bad, but sadly, just average.

I believe the course and hotel has been recently taken over by new owners, which probably explains why the course is as it is today. However, none of that explains why (once again) you are met with an arrogant, self-centred Head Pro.

After our first round, when asked about the state of the greens, I was met with "Why what wrong with them?" and "I dunno, I leave that to the greenkeepers', he went on to say "he hadn't been out on the course in some time"... strange that a member later confirmed he had been involved in the Captain's Day match only the day before?!

When are Golf Pro's going to learn, that its not all about 'them' and actually its the customers who matter. Especially in a 'resort' style set-up like this. As such, I never returned to the Pro-shop after this, meaning they had no incremental monies from me.

Inside the clubhouse, more efforts have been made to create a light and airy space and a good place to enjoy dinner and drinks around the bar area. Furthermore, I can't praise the food and bar staff more highly. Very courteous and good fun. I would also give praise to the reception team who were also attentive and friendly. Perhaps the Head Pro could learn something from them!

With very wet conditions, we also took the time to enjoy the Gym, Pool and Spa, all of which were very pleasant.

All in all at £149 for two nights, three rounds + DBB (courtesy of Your Golf Travel) it was priced reasonably.

However, with idiots like that running the Pro shop. I won't be rushing back!

In short, immaculate!!

I've been meaning to play here on numerous occasions due to the great reviews but for one reason or another it got postponed, however, it was well worth the wait!!

As soon as you drive through the gates, you know the place is well looked after but this doesn't give you an indication of how good it REALLY is on the course itself. In short - it's immaculate!!

Seriously, the fairways are like carpets and the greenkeepers should be given a medal or even a knighthood. I have not seen fairways in better condition ANYWHERE or the greens for that matter!

The course itself is really interesting too, with few holes the same. Many of the greens are elevated but not as bad as I had feared and actually it's a good challenge!

I didn't visit the clubhouse or the practice facilities but for the purpose of the review I will mark them as good.

Don't pass up the opportunity to play here, its a good as people say and I for one will be playing here again very soon!!

The Finest Course in London ...

Don't know why I haven't written this review before as I have been waxing lyrical about the place since I played there in April.

This IS without doubt the best condition course I have EVER played. Seriously, this is how golf was meant to be ...

The Grove has no members, as such anyone can play here but you will pay for the privilege. Home of the WGC Championship in 2006, where Tiger Woods eagled the 18th three days on the trot and only getting a birdie on the same hole on the final day - it's a true test.

Everything about this place is class, from the reception (they take your clubs from your car and park it for you) to the lockers room (your name will be on your locker when you arrive). to the superb food.

The course itself is immaculate, with fairways better than some greens I play on...The greens are as you would expect, close to 11-12 on the Stimp-meter but this is how the PRO's play!!

OK, would I pay the £160 - no! (I was a guest). Would I pay a twilight rate from 3pm for £60/70 - yes I would! This is a real treat, so if you get the chance to play there, do it. If you have to pay, look for the deals.

I can't wait to go back!

A hidden oasis in London's great Metropolis ...

It was a hot and sunny day when we played at Muswell Hill, so I was looking forward to a good day’s golf and I wasn't disappointed!!

This course is very easy to get to locate, as it is only a mile or two from London’s busy North Circular and only 7 miles from the M25. However, what's most surprising about this course is how quiet it was ... The clubhouse, modern and airy, is open plan and very welcoming, as is the patio area, where the early birds were enjoying a post round drink as we arrived. There was a real buzz about the place and all the members we saw were very friendly.

The course itself is surrounded by mature and lush trees, meaning every hole is enclosed yet there is room on adjacent fairways if you do stray from your fairway. The layout starts with a few benign holes but this is welcome as whilst they may seem easy at first glance, rest assured the greens will keep you on your toes. We were fortunate that there had been a downpour the previous evening, otherwise I would have described them as lightening quick – I am guessing they were as high as 10 or 11 on the stimp meter.

There is a nice combination of holes and some with beautifully mown (criss-cross styli)and mature tree lined fairways with most holes requiring some thought and strategy – you will not always need your driver. However, if I had any criticism to make, I would say the course could benefit from a few more fairway bunkers (although I am being picky now). The bunkers that are around the greens are well maintained with good sand.

Once back at the clubhouse the staff couldn’t have been nicer. You are met with a smile and good humour and the bar food seemed reasonable considering we are so close to the centre of the capital.

All in all, a fantastic addition to the ‘TSG Preferred list’ and one that I plan to play many times over the coming months!

Very nice...

Finally managed to get to this course after many attempts and I am glad I did....

The course is set in the Kent rolling hills and is part of a bigger gym complex but clearly the golf course is the big draw.

Firstly, the course is very well kept and whilst you can't deny its a superb course, I think it's one of those courses that you will like more, the more you play.

The green were is good order (and quick!) and the fairways very nice to play off. There is more than plenty to test you any standard of golfer and it can be a test on your legs given the amount of ascents & descents as you make your way around. Plenty of water to keep you honest too.

Lovely course, lovely seating area to enjoy a beer after and the staff were friendly - I will go back!

The Majors' in miniature...

I had heard about this place a few years back but for whatever reason it had dropped off my radar, but it soon came back to me. I visited this venue by accident a couple of weeks ago and was very pleasantly surprised by what was on offer...

At first glance you think you are entering a simple, modern looking driving range with two tiers and all the facilities you would expect from this type of set up, burgers, soft drinks etc. However, upon further inspection you find they have a well kept secret 9 hole course.... but not just any 9 hole course, one that has been designed with some of the world's best golf holes in mind.

Yes, if you want to play Troon's Postage Stamp or the 16th at Augusta, this place is the closest you're going to get to it, in this lifetime anyway. Of course, the holes are not identical to the originals (it's a Par 3 course!) but you can certainly get a feel for what is like to play some of these great holes. What's more, the course is very well kept with some of the greens better than your average 18 hole course. And with the clever use of two tees and two pins on each green (which have plenty of room) you can actually play a full round without issue.

I won't divulge what I scored here but if you looking for some short game practice or a some good fun on a well maintained short course, this is well worth a look. Oh and the staff were very friendly and more than happy to take the time to show you round the place.

If you are in the area, give it a try!

The East Course...

Only my second visit to Wentworth playing (the first was a privilege) but once again the layout, the clubhouse and service are exceptional. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the dining area and although £14 a head, I thought is was very good value, beautifully cooked and the coffee was the best I have tasted in years!

The staff are what make this place, they just know how to look after and are always polite and attentive, so many clubs could learn from this.

Meanwhile back to golf, we played the East Course.......

Pine trees line the fairways on this testing but relativity easy design and they make you look forward to the day ahead. Shorter than the Edinburgh but not nearly as well maintained. In fact, I would go as far and say scruffy in places and by no means worth £180 a round. However, that said, the greens ARE superb and the surroundings a joy. And on this occasion the golf wasn't bad either.

Once again I was looked after by our superb host Anna and had the pleasure of The Naked Golfer and new TSGer Clare M for company. To sum up, good service, good golf and did I mention the coffee! :-)

Cranham Golf Course

Nice little course...

I'd heard a lot about Cranham and was looking forward to trying out this course...

The first thing I noticed was how well kept the place was, well laid out car park and clean, friendly and welcoming clubhouse and staff, which is always a nice way to start your day.

The course itself is by no means Wentworth but then it doesn't pretend to be. Instead, what you have, is a short, well maintained and benign course, that's completely flat but with one or two holes that are fun to play (most notably the Par 3's). However, considering the poor weather you have to applaud the quality of the greens.

Would I want to play the course ever week? No. But would I encourage anyone starting out in the game to play here? Yes.

Finally, for the lower handicappers (under 20) I recommend playing off the whites, as from the yellows, the course to way to short!!

Malden Golf Club

Compact & Bijou....

This private members club nestled in south west suburban London is well worth a visit...

Only a few miles from both Wimbledon and Twickenham this parkland course is fairly flat and benign but also pretty and a good test. The course has some great holes and the Greenkeeper is to be commended for having prepared some fantastic surfaces and I played here in Nov - so hats off to them!

The course is compact and has many residential homes backing onto it but this does not impinge on you or the residents due to good tree density. The half way hut is very cosy (A circular hut!) and worth stopping at to admire the photos of past and present captains.

There are some great driving holes too and if you're playing well you won't fail to enjoy this course.

Special thanks should go to both the staff in The Clubhouse (we couldn't have been better looked after) and Ben in the Pro shop was equally as a welcoming.

The club dates back to 1893 but moved to its current location in 1926 and if it wasn't so far from me, I would happily put this is on my 'regularly played' course list. Give it a try, you will enjoy it!

Pomp & Grandeur....

Not quite sure why my previous review of this course is not here, as I am sure I must have written one before... I shall have to get in contact with The TSG Team to see why it's disappeared!!

This course has a fantastic history and as previous reviewers have all said, The Clubhouse is amazing. It oozes' pomp and grandeur of yesteryear. I have played here a number of times via our TSG member in residence - Ms. Lilley - but playing here last week on a society day was without doubt my best experience to date.

The course seemed like it had much more TLC applied to it than on previous visits (so congratulations to the greenkeepers) with the fairways cut to display the true contours of the course and the greens rolling very true and quick.

I had the pleasure of meeting Matt from the London Putting Academy while here, who was quick to offer advice on both the course and on my putting. Sadly, this is not the part of my game that needs work but I enjoyed his useful tips and drills all the same.

The food here is very good and I have always found the hospitality and atmosphere superb. Give this place a go and you won't be disappointed! :-)

A real pleasure....

I guess this is one of those courses that you grow up knowing well, having seen it so many times on TV, but where you never think you will actually get to play! So it didn't need much persuasion when one of our newest and VERY popular members Anna posted the game here!

Having arrived early (for once) we enjoyed a refreshing pre-game drink on the main bar patio before heading out on the course. On this occasion, we were playing the Edinburgh course... perhaps not as well known as the West Course but this track proved to be a delight to play!

Our host for the day kindly introduced myself and my fellow lucky invitee (and Queen of TSG course reviews - Ms.Lockwood) to the starter, who kindly explained the course layout and pitfalls of the course before setting off on one of the last good golfing days of the summer.

This course is beautiful!

Thoughtful in its design, it twists and turns through dense woodland but there is plenty of room for even the most wayward driver to enjoy.

There are no specific stand out holes on the course as they are all good and I would compliment the greenkeepers on some fantastically true greens.

Of course, it always helps when you play a course well and so my 37 points on the day made for a pleasant drive home, but on this occasion, the lasting memory will be the superb service, the great location and the pleasant (and glamorous) company!

If you are lucky enough to play here, soak it up - this is the real thing! :-)

Golf as it should be....

You know, as soon as you drive through the front gates you are going to have a good day. The manicured lawns, idyllic setting, ancient bridges and the greeting at The Clubhouse, tells you everything your need to know. Polite, well mannered staff help you with everything you need and the surroundings and food are excellent!

The course itself is dominated by the famous clubhouse in sight from five or more holes but it is most notably known for its starring role in the James Bond movie 'Goldfinger', where 'Oddjob' throws his steel bladed bowler hat at 007 across the 18th green, missing and decapitating the marble statue. However, less well known is the Par 3 - 8th, which was the inspiration for the one and only 'Amen Corner' at Augusta.

I won't rattle on about the fantastic greens and well sculptured fairways as this is a given for any course that charges £150+ to play. Fortunately though I was a guest on a corporate golf day and therefore did not require the small mortgage required to play here.

Of course, I would play here every week if I could but until that lottery win, I will just say, if you get invited to play here - you will not be disappointed!

That is the first thing you say to yourself as you emerge from the tree lined drive up to The Clubhouse, stand on the patio and look out across the 9th and 18th fairways - I suspect there are few courses that have a better view in the whole of the UK! However, it gets better...

A warm welcome from the Pro shop and you are soon directed to the first tee and a fairly easy Par 4 opener but stop to consider how good the greens are now, as they get better (incredible, given the dry summer!). The course then offers a picturesque set of holes that continues through dense woodland slowly undulating and with every hole both different and with beautiful placed and manicured greens.

Despite expecting the course to then become 'samey', it doesn't. The Par 5's are just about reachable and the Par 3's hard to get at but if you are striking the ball well you'll have a good day. As such it really is a superb course layout. On two or three occasions I had to stop, take a moment and appreciate how good this course is! This course may be considered by some as expensive at £35 weekday and £40 weekend but being on the TSG 'Preferred course' its only £28 and £33 resepctively, making it more affordable. I would recommend anyone to take advantage of the discounted rates and play this club asap before the winter sets in. The food was very good and reasonably priced too.

I will definitely be making this one of the regular venues on my golfing calendar, so if you see me post a game, come and join me! :-)

A good day out...

Hmmmm... can't say I fell in love with Pyecombe but I would say its a very enjoyable course to play on a sunny day!

Never a fan of a course that begins with a short but near vertical climb on the first hole and given the second hole has a brutal slope making it very difficult to score here, its a tough start...however, once past these two holes the course opens up and is definitely a true test for any golfer. The fairways and greens are well looked after and if you can control the wind (you wouldn't want to play here on a cold winter's day!) it is a fun layout to play. There are some stunning views all around the course and at times you could be forgiven for thinking you are in the Welsh valleys.

The clubhouse is cosy and friendly and the food very nice. Fairly priced at £25 a round, I will happily return... next Summer! :-)

Lovely layout...

Tucked away from the maddening crowds in rural Buckinghamshire, this course is fantastic! I had little expectation despite the good reviews but was very impressed by this layout. It reminded me in some ways of Brocket Hall and Foxhills. Pine tree lined in places, the course gradually undulates around a parkland setting. The contours lend themselves to good play, which is rewarded if you don't try too hard. There are plenty of holes that stick out but the tee boxes deserve the greatest accolade, as I have played on worse greens! All in all a very pleasant course to play and lots to keep your interest as you go round. Also a lovely spot to enjoy a drink on the patio outside the club but we were happy to enjoy the clubhouse from the inside. Well done Mark T for promoting this place in his initial review. I will definitely be revisiting this course again! :-)

Pleasant stroll in the Essex countryside.....

Played here as a member's guest and really enjoyed it. A relatively course new (1995) but you wouldn't know it, as the course is mature and seems much more established than its age suggests. Mainly Parkland, the course is in two loops both meeting back at the Pro Shop with some pretty water features and undulations to be enjoyed long the way. Some nice driving holes here too but beware, you will need to be straight. There is a couple of Par 3's that stand out, namely the 4th (island green) and the 7th (157 yards ALL over water). Greens were in good shape but perhaps a little fluffy on the day we played but I suspect they will be cut in time for the members Sat am walk. The Clubhouse is brand new and there is a great patio area on which to enjoy a beer overlooking the 18th green. Also stopped for some food, which was very reasonably priced and tasty. Everyone was very friendly. Look forward to visiting here again soon!

Pleasant surroundings but....

Played here on a Lexus Dealership Golf Day and was suitably impressed with the club and course. At first glance this place feels more like a hotel than a golf club but it soon becomes apparent that this is in fact, "A Country Club" with a swimming pool t'boot. The welcome was good (although I fancy this may have been the Lexus Team rather than club staff). The course is very well designed and maintained and it's always good to see work being done on the course. However, I can't say that they're were many memorable holes other than the newly designed Par 3, 11th and the short Par 4, 16th which involves a 180 yard drive across a lake - a superb hole! Otherwise, I would say at £65 a pop this course is overpriced. I am sure there are society deals that would make it cheaper but I think I would save my cash and play somewhere with more competitive rates!

Nice find....

Heard of this course but always dismissed it on account of being too far from home... but I was wrong to do so! The course is only a few short miles from the heart of Maidstone and it took me under an hour from Essex. The club entrance tells you that the course is going to be in good condition and the layout doesn't disappoint. The course starts with an uphill Par 4 and plays fairly up and down til the 6th and then the course starts to define itself. Wide fairways suggest a forgiving course but down be fooled, the rough is punishing and the wind very hard to judge - lost count the amount of times my bag was blown over! However, I would like to go back and play on a calmer day, as the greens are true (although a little fluffy when we played). The staff were very friendly even if the bar prices were a little heavy! Well done to Ash for getting a good deal - a good price at £20 each - I look forward to returning soon!

What a little gem....

Decided to play here following the review by John A. and he was true to his word. A shortish course, tucked away on the North London suburbs, this is a great find! OK, it's not Wentworth but the parkland course twists and turns with some testing Par 3's and 4's with every hole different. Considering this is council course, the greens are well looked after too. You are welcomed at the Pro shop by friendly staff, who are happy to help and point you in the right direction. We paid £10 with a 2for1 voucher but would have happily paid the full rate. Nice little pub next door to enjoy a post round drink in too. Will definitely be revsiting this course - thanks John!

A pleasant stroll....

Tucked away in the north Essex Countryside, this course has a nice feel about it. The Clubhouse is large and overlooks both the 9th & 18th greens and in the summer would be a relaxing place to enjoy a drink. The course itself is fairly benign with mostly flat fairways and pretty open until the last few holes. The greens were firm but fair, although I suspect they would struggle to hold your ball in the drier months. Whilst there were few 'stand out' holes I would certainly be happy to return here and look forward to playing here again.

Great Views and A Good Test...

When you arrive at Pinner Hill you are immediately taken back a little in time! This is a very traditional style golf club with a grand Clubhouse full of charm and many nooks and crannies. We were met by the very welcoming Clair, who briefed us on where everything was and what we could expect from the course. A quick coffee in the cosy spike bar and we headed out. The course begins with a downhill Par 5 that gets you in the mood and you then spend the next few holes twisting up and down through parkland - although as most of the gradients are slight, you don't really notice until you look back to where you have come. Stop for a moment on the eighth tee and take in the views as far as The City, Wembley and Harrow-on-the Hill - very pleasant. The course then continues through woodland with some very tricky undulating fairways - reminiscent of Foxhills or Brocket Hall. The greens were in good condition(considering the winter) and I can imagine they would be very tricky in Summer. The course finishes with an uphill drive with your second shot across water to the green in front of the Clubhouse. All in all a great course and with its position on the TSG 'Preferred List' I think this could become a TSG favourite.... I will definitely be going back soon!

A pleasant afternoon...

Played here on route to the Manchester Golf Show and really enjoyed the walk. Firstly, we were warmly greeted in the Pro Shop and in the very traditional Tudor style Clubhouse and all the members we spoke to seemed friendly. Given the rain we have had over the winter we have all been used to playing off sodden ground, so imagine our surprise when we were given 'nicro mats' to carry on our bags... to be used when playing off the fairways!! Cumbersome at first maybe, but a great way for the course to maintain the quality of the fairways - and these fairways were as good as I've played anywhere this winter(I even saw a ball bounce on the fairway!). At first glance the course doesn't seem particularly challenging but it has some long holes and whilst fairly flat, there is enough to challenge all levels of handicap. The greens were in good condition and I suspect would be very quick come June. All in all a great afternoon's golf and a course I would look forward to visiting again! :-)

Played here a few times now and whilst it is a pleasant little course, I think it needs a lot of TLC...

Fairly short, there are a good combination of holes but alas, many of the greens are water-logged and some of the greens have been left damaged and unkept - the 18th green was a farce. You can tell how well a course is being looked after though by the little things.... torn flags and sand on the greens suggest poor management. Shame really, as I think this could be a litte gem!

That said, The Clubhouse is quirky and cosy with a beautiful old fireplace and reasonably priced food. Would play here again but I would recommend checking the condition of the course before booking!

I want to go back, tomorrow....

I played here as part of a company day out and was very impressed with everything from the drive up to The Clubhouse to the changing rooms - everything about this place says quality. That said, Foxhills is one of those places that you've heard about but never really sure whether it will live up to the hype OR be worth the money...well in this case, both are true!

We played the Longcross course - just over 6000 in length - the course it is lined with pine trees for almost all of its 18 holes with no two holes the same. N.B. The 14th was recently voted one of the greatest holes ever played by BBC Radio 5 Live listeners. The greens are immaculate and the course proves to be a test for everyone but don't be put off, you can score here.

However, the real joy comes from relaxing in the spike bar and whilst expensive to eat, the food is superb. I wouldn't probably have chosen to play here of my own devices (especially at £70 to play at weekends) but now that I have, I will be hunting out the deals e.g. £130 for a midweek four-ball... roll on the spring!

Friendly little club, BUT....

So, after all the debates, arguments and conjecture I finally get to play at the Home of The Epping Bandits....

On first impressions this is a great little club, a tiny clubhouse with friendly staff greet you and you feel like you are in a cosy login cabin. The bacon butties were good and the coffee too. The course starts with a fairly easy uphill par 4 and the whilst there are few bunkers on the course in total, the first thing you'll notice is there isn't any sand in the bunklers - oh no, its glass!! This is a first for me but I am told it actually makes a very good drainage system. Whether this is true or not, it certainly stops you in your tracks as they look green in the sunlight! As for the rest of the course, it is neatly laid out and twists and turns making for an entertaining round. HOWEVER, let it be known this course is NOT a long course! Which is why it courts so much controvesy. Actually, I won't beat about the bush, this course, while fun to play, is not a proper course. Any course with a Par 68 and a SSS of 63 tells its own story.

As such, whilst I should be jumping for joy at finally breaking 80(after 14 years of golf!), part of me is a little disappointed, as I can't claim it to really be a true test. Perhaps if the club added some more bunkers, put the tees back 30 yards, it may then quailfy but alas the jury is out on this course. Furthemore, out of the 16+ players that played with us on the day (In a 5 Club Challenge) 6+ players score in excess of 40 points, which tells its own story! However, I would recommend this course for anyone just starting the game.

So the verdict: Yes, I enjoyed the game, yes, I would go back, but does it deserve to be a regular course on the TSG roster - Sadly, no! :-)

Played at Bentley Golf Club many moons ago and had positive memories, so was looking forward to playing here again after such a long break....

At first glance Bentley is a very nice club with a well laid out course. The greens and fairways and in very good condition and there can be no complaints with this as a overall test of golf. The course meanders through and around parkland terrain, is mostly flat (so you wont be out of breathe at any point!) and there are some very pretty holes with good water features and landscapes on the back nine.

The Clubhouse is a little old fashioned (think 70's design) and whilst no-one was unfriendly, it didn't feel your were overly welcome either. As such, all things considered, I think in the current climate £29 on a Friday afternoon (£40+ at weekends) is too much for this course.

So, all in all, yes I would return but I think the pricing needs to be more competitive to make it a regular haunt!

Played here on the inaugural 'Cyder Cup Society' match and enjoyed the course. OK, lets keep it in perspective though, if you are expecting perfect greens and manicured tee boxes, then look elsewhere! However, if you're just after a fun afternoon's golf and you are not worried about the odd frayed fairway and bunkers without deep sand - then this is the place for you. Not overly long the course is set just off the M25 at Jct 30. A mature parkland course, it is tight in places (so you won't need your Driver often) but there is nothing much else to trouble the mid to low handicapper. Wouldn't rush back but would happily play there as part of another CCS day! :-)

I can see The Pennines from here....


Played here on day two of my Cheshire Tour and once again was treated to a great test of golf and a friendly reception! Located 5 minutes from Altrincham (where we stayed at a very compact & clean 'motel' style accommodation - The Altrincham Lodge) this course has a been landscaped in a beautifully mature and pretty forest.

The first six holes are set in deep woodland with some fantastic oak trees lining every hole providing a foreboding atmosphere to the terrain. The course itself is reasonably flat but requires a lot of thought and you will need to pick your spots each time, to have a clear second shot to the greens. The fairways were well looked after with few divot marks spoiling the turf and the greens, despite the northern weather, had clearly held up well in a terrible summer. You can see The Pennines from the 7th, 8th & 9th holes, although they are someway in the distance but it adds to the 'vista' all the same.

Everything about the place suggests the members care alot about the course and The Clubhouse would sit happily in any affluent London suburb! I would certainly play here again and would happily recommend it to fellow TSGers, however at £30 mid-week, this may stretch some peoples budgets. However, would definitely play here again! :-)

Friendly Cheshire welcome....

Played here as part of my first trip north of Birmingham on TSG and was pleasantly surprised. Firstly we were warmly welcomed but the Pro in the shop, who knew exactly who we were and who we were playing with (and knew all about TSG!).

The Clubhouse built in local sandstone has a rustic and traditional feeling about it and before heading out I had my first experience of the famous local 'Steak Canadian' baguette! (A minute steak with caramelised onions, very nice it was too). So on to the course itself... the first few holes and pretty straight forward and give you a chance to warm up without any fear of losing balls or straying into thick rough but then once you hit the Par 3 third, you can see the course is going to test you! Not overly long the course twists and turns through local woodland with some tees positioned on high plateaus, the aptly names 'needles eye' giving you a 228 yards shot with a 60ft drop - very testing!! You then cross to the seventh holes where things open up but don't be fooled, you will be tested to the full despite some open fairways, as most holes offer you some tight shots to the green. The rest of the course is pretty, established and very well looked after. However, whilst enjoying the contours of the course, save your energy for the steep climb up the 18th (a 45 degree climb which will leave even the fittest puffing!

All in all, a great venue for the start of our two day Cheshire Tour and one I would recommend you play if you get the chance! :-)

Time to revisit.....

Well it's fair to say 'Royal' Hartswood has taken a pounding from me over the last couple of years, ranging from 'satisfactory' to a 'avoid at all costs'.... however, now it's time for some praise! After some pretty poor attention in the last few years, I can honestly say, right now the course is looking as good as I can remember! The local council have obviously heeded the comments of TSGers (I doubt this very much!) and put some TLC back into the course. The greens are flat and there is little or no sign of any disease anymore, in fact apart from some of the greens being a little 'fluffy' they are looking great. If you get a chance, go and play this course while you can (Sept 12), as the winter will not be kind to Hartswood and therefore now is the time to visit!!

Unconvinced......

Played this course following the positive reviews it had received on TSG and because of the incredible deal that was on offer (£8 per person). However, despite some very nice holes on this course, I remain unconvinced.... The course has a parkland layout with plenty of mature trees and some great 'vistas' and I really liked the fact that each hole was different and require some real thought in order to score well. However, the course is VERY scruffy in places with earth mounds scattered around the course, yet little sign of any work being done in some months. In addition, there were plenty of bunkers with grass growing in them and whilst you can allow for major works being incomplete, grass in bunkers in just lazy on the part of the greenkeepers and the club. The greens on the first fews holes were awful too but this did improve as we made our way around! Would I return? Not sure... it was great value at £8 but given the distance from my hometown and the remote nature of the course, I don't think I'll be rushing back! :-)

Wow! I loved this course.....

That's the feeling you get as you drive through the gates! Tucked away, not far from the M25 this course is fantastic. Settled in the Halliloo Valley, you can pretty much see the whole course from the first tee and the it's a great view. Each hole plays differently although be warned, most of your play will involve the ball either above or below your feet. The greens were superb, the fairways neatly cut (shame the rough wasn't, although I blame the weather rather than the green keepers!). Considering I had never played here before I was VERY impressed with the course and as this club is on the 'TSG Preferred list', I think you would be hard pressed to find a better value course in the whole country at £20. If you get a chance play this course, its a good test and beautiful surroundings! :-)

A Good Test.......

Played here on the Epping Bandits v South East Swing Society Cup and enjoyed the course a lot! Every hole on the course has a different angle of approach and the course weaves/circles its way around the terrain, meaning you are never far from the clubhouse. The greens were fair and true and the course is generally well maintained. If I had to pick any fault, it is that on holes 4 to 6 you are very close to the M25 which spoils the tranquillity a little. However, everyone in the shop was very friendly and I was even 'taxi'd' to my four-ball by one kind member after arriving late to my tee off, due to a traffic accident. All in all a good day out - I will happily return!

Friendly and well maintained....

Played here on a friends golf day and really enjoyed the course! Perched on the top of Sene Valley over-looking the English Channel in some beautiful natural countryside, the course starts with some straight forward holes but then meanders through the terrain with some testing holes that require some thought.

Not overly long, the course does however require some good club selection as the rough has been grown up recently to test the members guile. The greens were in fantastic condition and the course is clearly looked after and loved by the locals.

The clubhouse is light and airy, with polite staff. My only comment is that £30 mid-week and £40 at weekend this may stretch a few budgets given the location... However, will definitely go back!

Played here on a GDUK Golf Day (The Race to Stoke Park) and enjoyed this parkland course. Tucked away on the East side of Essex, the course is well laid out and a good test for all levels. The course is mostly flat until the last 6 holes but it does require some thought as there some interesting terrain e.g You are required to launch your ball 160 yards over the equivalent of Beeches Brook to get to the green on the 9th! Otherwise a nice course and a large bar/patio area in which to relax after. Friendly staff, I would go back!

Hidden Gem.....

Came across this course after a friend recommended it and I wasn't disappointed! The course itself is situated amongst 1000+ acres of parkland and is well maintained...some might say preserved!

The Clubhouse is steeped in history having been established in 1924 and you could easily loose a few hours just absorbing the winners board and the trophies that have been won and lost in that time. The course layout twists and turns through undulating ground with some raised tees and some challenging holes but above all it is the atmosphere that should be enjoyed. Deer roam on the course and there are some very mature trees and views to enjoy along the way. The greens are in good shape too considering the rain we had in April and the fairways are clean and tidy, which you would expect from a members course.

There is a great viewing lounge over-looking the 18th, where you can relax and enjoy the views and the 'Fish & Chips' Friday menu was excellent.We were very warmly welcomed by the Pro shop and staff and I would highly recommend giving this course a try, as you could easily be forgiven for thinking you had travelled back in time to the 1920's.

It may be argued that the green fees are a little high at £45 Mon-Thu, £50 on Fri and £55 at weekends but if you can afford it, give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

Firm, Fast and Friendly.....

First time here and REALLY enjoyed the course! First thing you'll notice is the cosy atmosphere at the club. We were down for two days and from the moment we stepped out of the car everyone we met said hello.

Based on a hill top over-looking Brighton and Saltdean the course twists and turns with stunning veiws. The course is chalk based and as such, despite the rain over the last two weeks, it was bone dry.

There are some noteable signiture holes (5th-Par 5 & 15th-Par 5) and there is plenty to test even the lowest handicappers. Because it drains so well, make sure you have your short game with you as stopping the ball on the well kept greens can be tricky. My one tip would be keep the ball low and keep aware of the wind direction, as it seems to change for every whole.

It was great fun to play this type of layout and I would throughly recommend you try this course especially given the exceptional TSG rates (50% off everything) it makes up for the petrol you'll use getting there. The Pro shop was friendly and very accomadating (one of four-ball couldn't play on the second day due to injury but it was no trouble to change tee times/buggies).

Looking forward to going back in the summer already - its well worth the trip!!

Decided to go back to Warley Park (the closet course to where I live) and once again loved it! This time I played course 1 + 2 and was hugely impressed with no.2. This nine holes is as good as any nine holes as I've played in Essex. Undulating, great views, nice fairways and good greens....I really could fall in love with this place! Tucked away in parkland a few minutes from the M25, I would recommend any TSGers to give it a try. If this course was to lower its rates (Normally £30+) I think it would feature much more heavily on the TSG roster. However, at £9 via the internet booking - I can't wait to go back!!

Nice to go back....

Following some bad snow damage to the greens and some rather ambivalent staff, I had allowed this course to drop of my radar. However, upon revisiting I was glad to see the course is now under new management and that we were welcomed very warmly. 'Henry' greeted us in the spike bar and was quick to explain how they were looking to improve on the previous owners approach and that he hoped we enjoyed the changes they were making. Well, I have to applaud him, he was true to his word and it was great to see works going on all over the course. This could be a fantastic venue for TSGers. A twisting and turning parkland course, some great holes and the greens, whilst not quite there yet, are well on their way to being good, fast and true again. My only criticism would be there isn't enough sand in the bunkers and that I think the course would benefit from switching the front and back 9 around (the current ninth would make a better finishing hole!). It would also be nice if they had SKY in the spike bar but I am nit picking now...it was a refreshing change for a club owner to treat 'visitors' as customers, rather than a necessary evil. Good value at £18 and as such, I will be back again very soon and recommend TSGers give it another try!! :-)

Nice and quiet.....

Maybe I have been playing too many courses close to motorways recently but the first thing I enjoyed about the course was how relaxing and tranquil it was! The course itself is parkland and twists and turns with no two holes the same. The course has plenty to keep your interest. Bunkers are plenty, so good course management required and although fairly short (I didn't use more than an 8 iron for my second shot until the 10th) don't be fooled. Generally well maintained and a nice friendly clubhouse with a good outside area, which must be great to enjoy a post game drink at during the summer. Glad I visited and whilst we were fortunate to get it at internet prices but I would happily pay more and look forward to going back soon!

Nice to return....

This is the course I started my Adult golfing career on, so it was nice to return after about 14 years and I could just about remember most of it! A parkland course, it is tight in places and you need to pick your spots if you are going avoid trouble. Some nice Par 3's around the place too and fun to cross the Horse Racing track on your way round the back nine. Great views and friendly clubhouse...will return but maybe not leave it so long next time! :-)

There I was thinking I'd played this course and surprise, surprise I was wrong...odd seeing as its only 5 or 6 miles from my front door! This is more of a complex than a course, 3 x 9 holes, of which we played The Horndon and The Langdon. The Horndon is a bit of an 'up & down' track and has no particularly outstanding holes, bar a tricky uphill Par 3, 8th. However, once you switch courses it's another world entirely. Well sculpted, undulating fairways with great views of The City, I really enjoyed The Langdon. I also played well which always helps, but the greens held up nicely in the wet and I am looking forward to returning in the Summer. Good value at £15.23(!), modern Clubhouse and a great 'mini breakfast' for £3.50!

Fantastic Golf Course.......

Played here once before about 12 years ago when I first took up golf, in fact I probably shouldn't have been allowed on back then! However, now I can really appreciate it - you know when you walk though the clubhouse doors your going to have a good day. The course has plenty of twists and turns to test you, clean fairways and solid, well-draining greens - bearing in mind it was Dec and they played like its the middle of summer. In addition, despite there being more bunkers on the course than I've ever seen anywhere(On the 9th I counted 17?!)however,I only managed to find two all day. Food and hospitality were good too. Finally, don't miss the panoramic views from the spike bar beautiful to sit and enjoy a drink in after. A top day and well worth a visit - even in winter!

Nice Setting......

Played here a few weeks back and throughly enjoyed the course. A fairly open parkland layout with plenty of interesting holes. However, it is quite long and therefore may not suit the high handicapper. Overall it is quite flat but there are a few great holes, particular on the back nine including a 600 yards Par 5 to finish - ouch! A nice buzz.........

Played here on a gorgeous sunny Autumn day. The clubhouse was busy with a real buzz that I havent seen at a club in ages unless on a golf day and was full of seniors and youngsters alike. The course itself is a good test with plenty to think about. Parkland in layout, the fairways twist and turn to keep it interesting. Most of the greens are well protected so you need a good second shot in and the greens were good, especially given they had only recently been tinned. Great Par 5 finishing hole too (only the 608 yards!) Everyone made us feel very welcome and the clubhouse has a nice feel with plenty of space to relax and watch the TV and the Pro shop has some bargins. Oh and the food wasnt bad either. Will definitley return!

Friendly but a bit pricey.....

Played here on a Sunday afternoon in the hope the course would be clear but actually nice to see local members were still teeing off after 2pm! The course is parkland in design and has enough holes to keep you interested all the way round. The greens were is great condition too given the recent dry patch but the fairways were a little bare in places. There is no water to speak of but there are some fairways bunkers to avoid (I didn't!) The clubhouse has a very traditional feel as the course dates back to 1907 but it is by no means stuffy. Everyone was very friendly and made us welcome, so I would definitely recommend. My only criticism would be in the green fee? £40+ for visitors is way too high. Speak to the secretary before booking as they may be happy to discount. Will be back!

Cheap and cheerful......

First of all I think I should make it clear this is by no means the best course youre ever going to play on! However, if your looking for a round of golf at very cheap rates (£9 on a sunday afternoon) this is the place for you. The course is a bit scruffy in places and the greens are a bit fluffy but what do you expect for under a tenner. All the staff in the clubhouse/cafe were very friendly and whilst I wont be playing there every week, I would play there again!

Hmmmm, not sure I'll be back....

Now given this course is only 3 miles from my front door I have no idea why I hadnt tried it before? However, despite it being a fairly pretty and well kept course, I didnt find it particulary memorable?! Some of the holes run along side the M25 and no amount of netting is going to drown this out (try fencing guys!) but that didnt put me off....I guess the place just didnt seem to have much of an atmosphere....in fact, whilst no one was unpleasant to us, I didnt feel I was made particulary welcome either and so wont be rushing back. At some stage private clubs will realise they are businesses too and they will not survive unless the treat visitors like customers rather than just tourists!!

Never heard of this course until I saw a sign just off the A10, so thought I would give it a go. Now I wont say I didnt like the course (I did )only, I dont think it was worth £35 on a Bank Holiday afternoon when the course was pretty much empty! A parkland up and down track, there are some good holes and its a good test, given it required some thinking to get round in a good score but I'm sorry, if you want people to visit your course think about the climate your operating in and give people a reason to come back not stay away - maybe thats how they want it?!

Played here with Trevor on his GAC celebration day and enjoyed the course. The setting is very pleasant and the course meanders with some great views and some lovely scenery. The course feels longer than it is but its well looked after. Not sure this is really my type of course (too many hills and left legged dog legs for my slice) but worth it for the walk! I guess as part of a hotel chain (Marriott), you should expect a bit of grandeur/new build but in this case the bar and hotel facilities were fantastic!

This a 'proper' course!!

Played here on the final day of the GolfAgainstCancer Tour with Trevor and loved it!! Arguably the best coutrse I have played in Essex. Essentially a private members course, it is well maintained and there are some hidden gems to be found. The course is a good test and you dont want to be wide of the fairways or the chances are you'll loose it in the heather and gause. The greens are like billard tables and I hardly saw a pitch mark all day, which means the members look after it too. At times it felt like a links course and others like I was walking around Walton Heath. OK, it may be a little pricey at £35 midweek but give it a try, you wont be disappointed!!

Friendly but poor greens......

Came here for a TSG posted game and was looking forward to it after hearing good things and actually it wasnt a bad course all in all! Almost completely flat, the course is very open to the wind, which makes it a good test and whilst no one hole stood out, I enjoyed the round. However, given its status as a chemical free course, I think the greens were pretty poor. Dont get me wrong, I am all for being eco-friendly but its not much a claim if the greens arent up to scratch. However, the course is under new managemnt, so I expect this to improve soon. Very friendly clubhouse and staff and its a nice place to enjoy a drink after!

All in all, pretty good....

Not played here before but took a look at TSG reveiews and decided to give it a go. The course is council run but dont let this put you off. Parkland in layout, its mature and reasonably well kept and I've played on worse greens at private clubs. There are plenty of interesting and longish holes for all levels of golfer with no two holes looking the same. The clubhouse itself is a little scruffy but I would happily return - good value too at £18 after 1pm on Sat!

Watch out for the greens.......

Played here a couple of weeks back on Golf Day through work and had a great day... some of the holes here are counted in the 'Top 100 courses' list and one of the par three is reported to be the sixth best par 3 in the country. The first half of the course is pleasant but the back nine was fantastic! Not sure it is good enough to warrant the £65 standard midweek green fee but its worth a visit if you get the chance to play it. However, watch out for the greens - they're VERY quick!!

Great little find....

Played here on The Open weekend and the first thing I'll say is how friendly the staff were. The course itself is by no means Wentworth but it offers a good test for all. The greens are a little fluffy and very small in places, which means you need to be accurate to score. The fairways are a little long but as the course is under new management I expect this to improve. If youre looking for a easy going fun round at very affordable prices, its well worth a visit! Will go back again!

Played here on a charity golf day and was impressed with the course. An established parkland layout, the course requires some thought as it is both tight and short in places. I'd been meaning to play here for a while and was pleased I got around to it - its a good course! The first thing you notice when you arrive is the size of the place, the car park alone you could get lost in. The course itself I really liked; A hilly front nine will get you puffing and whilst its long in places, its quite forgiving as the fairways are fairly wide. But dont be fooled, you will still need to think your way round to post a good score. I loved views of Kent from some of the tees and the greens were VERY good and should be handled with care(very fast!). My only disappointment was the breakfast? A bacon roll to me is not a breakfast...However, I will happily return!

Firstly I'll start by saying what an amazing deal we had...£95, DBB, free room upgrade,2 rounds,Buggies,free range balls and the room and the food were very good - booked via YourGolfTravel. We played The Lakes course on the first day and it was well laid out with some very testing holes and plenty of water to watch out for. However, despite being a very pleasant parkland course the one thing that let it down was the greens! Very slow and full of lumps. That said, it didnt stop us enjoying the round.

Friendly and welcoming.....

Took the chance while I was up seeing family to try this course out and was very pleasantly surprised. I called a number of courses in the area before confirming the booking and chose to play here as I found the staff friendly, relaxed and keen to have visitors to the course! The course is in two halves, the front nine is new-ish and the back nine very established but due to the course being nicely maintained I dont think I really noticed that much. Being a parkland course, you are required to plot your way round and I probably only used the driver on 8 holes. The greens were also in great condition and I suspect will be very quick in the summer. All round, a great afternoon and good value at £20 with an openfairways card. Will definitely be going back!

A good track...

Played here on a bright spring day and enjoyed the course alot. Not overly long, it does however feel long due to its continuous undulation. Cut into a valley, it also has some great views. The Montgomerie......

Having played the Roman Road Course the day before and been disappointed this was much more what I was expecting from Celtic Manor! The first two holes are fairly benign but then you hit the 3rd - what a hole! Following your drive, you will be faced with a 100ft drop through pines trees to the green and when you get there you have a fantastic view of The 2010 course. The next few holes are a great test of accuracy and skill and the course continues to impress. Despite being very up and down (you'll feel it the next day) and wet for 15 out of 18 holes I still enjoyed playing this course and would recommend visiting for the veiws alone. All in all, a great course and one I would like to play again in better weather!

I guess I should start by saying that Celtic Manor is without doubt a fantastic complex but despite this, I cant say I was overly impressed by the Roman Road course! The course was extremely wet on the day we played but given the amount of cash that must be available to the greens keepers I was very disappointed this had not been addressed...on top of this, there was only one hole that particularly stood out - the 10th. Accommodation was very good (we stayed at The Manor) and all the staff were friendly but watch out for bar and food prices. If youre on a budget theres a great curry house close by called Taraka that did us proud! As for a return visit...hmmmm...I cant say I would rush back!

Despite teeing-off in blind fog, I really enjoyed this course! Mostly flat but with some tight small greens, it does require very straight shots to score well. Played here last weekend and didnt have a bad day! The course is still fairly new and is yet to mature properly but I still enjoyed it. There are some nice holes throughout, the greens are well kept and whilst open in places it had a bit of a inland linksy feel to it too. The best holes are saved for the back nine and 16, 17 and 18 are great finishing holes! Nice modern clubhouse, friendly staff and good value at £15 on Sat, all suggesting that I will be back!

A Real Treat..........

Well theres is very little you can complain about here, from the moment you drop your clubs at reception and someone carries them to the Pro shop, you know youre going to be spoilt! I played The International and whilst I played it in a previous life it really does make you appreciate what the pro's contend with every week - the greens were exceptional and sooooooo fast! The clubhouse is outstanding and everything about the place says quality. However, whilst I was lucky enough to be a guest I am not sure I could afford to play here every week. Pleasant stroll............

You can tell standing on the first tee that you are going to like the course....however, while not that long in yardage, the wind more than makes up for this! The undulating nature of the course also makes it seem longer than it is. There are some good views over the Thames estuary to take in too but dont be distracted - you will need to concentrate to score well. Great value at £20 with member and the clubhouse has a quaint history with friendly staff - will play here again!

Situated very close to the town of Marlow, this is a pretty parkland course with many twists and turns. Tough conditions but great history..........

Played here on a 'Golf News' society day and was excited about playing a course with such history and location(Gene Saracen won The Open here in 1932). Being a links course, you really do feel the varying conditions and it can be all seasons in a day! Loved the drama of the course with narrow fairways and humps and bumps everywhere but it is in a state of modifiction right now which means there is a lot of works being done on the course. However, great fun and will definately go back! Returned here in Oct 2011 and the course is looking near finished with fairways like billiard tables, really tough course but thats what the Pro's would want, however my games just isnt good enough for it but its fun trying!

Long but fair.......

This is a long course but relatively flat and is very nicely maintained with good greens. It starts with a long Par 5 dog-leg right hole which sets the tone for the rest of your round. However, beware of the water on a number of the holes as it can catch you out in places. Overall we enjoyed it but allow yourselves time as it took us nearly 5 hours to get round but we did have some high handicappers with us. Good value at £20 each using the Openfairways card and look forward to going back soon!

Poor......

Played here at the weekend for a bit of fun with a mate that has only just got into the game but what a shambles! The promise as you drive into the club is not lived up to....the course was okay, very open but the greens were shocking! This place is sadly unkept and unloved! It didnt help that the reception facilities were pretty awful too i.e. table and chairs but only coffee from a machine and no food available at all. A real shame as I was hoping for a little more......

Update:

Played Hartswood again a few times in the last few weeks and I am happy to say that the greens are now recovering well (See previous review). I also was pleased to see there has also been a bit of sand thrown into some the bunkers and even some new rakes as well. Good to see the course being maintained again and it remains pretty as ever. Always enjoy playing here and its once again great value!

Worth a look..........

Played this course on Sunday and was very pleasantly surprised! Tucked away just off the M20, this course starts fairly benign but has some good holes thereafter. Look out for the uphill par 3 - 10th (40ft ascent) and the downhill par 3 - 18th(80ft descent) great fun and quite a test, although we were probably helped by having a GPS to judge the distance. Great little course, look forward to returning soon!

Nice course.........

All in all, I enjoyed this course. A flat-ish parkland layout, it is tight in places and as such does not always require the driver.....and not using the driver helped my game!! The course was well maintained and the greens were in good condition. Green fees are possibly a little high at £38 but fair with a Openfairways card(£19). Would definitely recommend a visit - I will be back!

Overpriced........

At first glance this course promises a great round and to be fair to the them, the course was in great condition when I played. An undulating parkland course there is plenty to test even the best players. However, what a shame the day was spoilt by an over zealous rule book (no side pockets on your shorts and no trainers in the clubhouse), luckily I had a spare pair of shorts in the car! Added to this, at £42 a round (midweek!) I am hard pushed to say this was good value for money. I would happily play here again but alas not at these prices!

Tatty.......

Played this course just after it opened 4/5 years ago, so was keen to see how it had developed. Sadly, not very well! Whilst open and long, the course has little character and is in dire need of some TLC. The fairways looked like they could do with a good cut, there is little directional help (handy, if you dont know where the next tee is!) and the greens need a good soaking. All in all, a bit of a disappointment but I cant complain too much as it was only £12 to play - however, I guess that confirms the saying 'you get what you pay for'! Wont be rushing back.

Sad.......

Played Hartswood last week for probably the last time....despite being a very pretty course, it has fallen into dis-repair! The main problem is the diseased greens that make it virtually impossible to make an honest putt! I have written to the local council to complain but this seems to have fallen on deaf ears and as such I can no longer recommend this course! A shame, as it has provided myself and friends great entertainment over the years. I will keep you updated but in the meantime stay away!!

Hmmmm..........

I should like this course but alas I dont think I do! The main house is very dramatic on arrival and whets the appetite for a good round but somehow the course doesnt live up to the promise! Mostly flat and a little compact in places, it does have some good holes but nothing particulary memorable and as such I just cant get that excited about the place. Fairly priced with a 2fore1 card but it just feels like it needs some attention or something more. I wont be rushing back!

An Essex gem.........

Wow....what a brilliant course!

Decided to play this course as it is close to my Dads and I have always wondered what it was like and I was very pleasantly surprised! Tucked away and over looking the river Crouch, the course has some stunning views and not a road to be heard for miles! The course is undulating (linksy in feel too) and whilst not long, it does require a bit of thought to get round. The greens were excellent(!)and the fairways and rough are also well maintained. Friendly staff, a great little find and one I am already looking forward to revisiting soon. Give it a try, hopefully you will be as impressed as me!

Why did it I wait so long to play it.......

This private members course is approx. 1.5m from my front door and for one reason or another I have never played it before. Why?! This is great little course with undulating fairways, tight green positions which are very well maintained. There are three 9 hole courses which can be played in combination to keep you interested and there is a couple great drives over water to test you. Not overly long but the terrain makes it a real challenge. Pricey at £40 (even midweek) but they are still doing some winter deals (£25) and with 2for1 vouchers it was a steal at £12.50. Cant wait to go back....

OK.......

Tucked away from any main roads, this course is a pleasant enough. It has an undulating layout with some great views and some testing holes. Enjoyed the round but the greens are in need of some attention(!) and in places the fairways didnt look like they had been cut in weeks. Given the price (£30 including breakfast) I would expect better but cant complain too much as we had fun all the way round. Worth a visit but wouldnt rush back....

A great setting.........

First thing thats grabs you about this course is the clubhouse. Nicely positioned over looking both the 9th and 18th greens with plenty of space to enjoy a drink after the round. The course itself plays long(!). It will always take you a club more than you think to reach the greens and even then you will be tested as the course is susceptible to head winds. However, there are some great holes here and well worth a visit. Its a little pricey at £40 but great value at £20 with a 2for1 voucher/openfairways card. Will be back soon....

A good test.........

Played this course a few years ago and was keen to return. A well maintained course with good quality greens especially given the recent weather. Plenty here to test you with some very long par 5's and some tricky par 4's and some very pretty par 3's. Some great DB&B deals to be had if you want to stay over at the hotel. Not sure I will be rushing back until I have sorted my fairway play but well worth a visit! :-)

A Special Place.......

When you arrive at this course you just know you are somewhere special...I didnt really know what to expect before leaving home but the first thing I noticed was the atmosphere - you just know ever other player there is there because of their real love of golf!!

Of course, The Brabazon is the real draw and despite watching many Ryder cups on the TV, nothing really beats being on the hallowed turf. However, for me the buzz in the bar and the restaurant will be as memorable as the round - although I wont forget reaching the 18th green in two (albeit the greenside bunker - I didnt care!).

I wont bore you with the course because 4 Ryder Cups in 20 years tells its own story but its sheer quality!

On Day Two we played The Derby which whilst not The Brabazon was still good and just as enjoyable. All in all a great couple of days and a place that all serious lovers of the game should experience.

OK......

Difficult to give a fair review of this course as it snowed for half the time we were on the course! Having said that, the greens were in great condition for the time of year and there are some challenging holes. Fairly flat and open and it felt like it could do with a little tidying up in places but I understand it is about to undergo a major renovation soon. Friendly enough staff but I wouldnt rush back.

Compact and Bijou.....

All in all I liked this course! At first glance the course is flat and uninteresting but as you go round, you start to notice that there has been some real thought put in to it. Greens were good, Bunkers are a plenty and there a couple of very nice par 3's. Not particularly long but with some tight fairways and hidden water features, I suspect it would look great in the summer. All the members were friendly (although the Pro shop could be more cheerful) and whilst a little pricey at £25 midweek, it is worth a visit.

Played here on a cold January day, so not so sure I saw the course in its best light. However, its a fairly benign 18 holes that plays up and down parallel fairways but there are a few good holes. However, at £16 on a Saturday(with a member) you cant really go wrong. Wont be rushing back but would play again!

Played this course at the weekend and despite the damp conditions I think the course held up well. Good greens with some long and wide fairways, there is nothing that should trouble most of the low - mid handicappers. Tucked away from the main roads, I would happily play here again but perhaps in dryer conditions!!

A very good location so close to the M25, it has some great views and some interesting holes that dont always require the driver but do demand accuracy. All in all, I quite liked this course, however, once again the greenkeeper is letting the side down...the first green was appalling and whilst they did get better, their condition certainly cost me a couple of shots! Would play here again but cant see how they value it at £30 a round?!

Beautiful Course.........

I have had the pleasure of playing Brocket Hall a number of times in a previous life but played the 'The Melbourne' again a few weeks back and thought I should let you all know the course was in fantastic condition! More one for the mid to low handicapers but I dont think you will find a better setting than this anywhere else so close to London. Last thing to mention; the ferry on the 18th fairway that takes you across the lake/river to the green....a great way to end the round - unless of course you drop a few in the water like I did! As Pete says, expensive but if you get the chance to play with a member - bite their hand off!

Nice enough......

Played here last week and found the course quite tough over the first few holes but it eases off over the final four. A rich tree-lined parkland course with some fantastic views over London, it was a little bare in places and the greens needed a cut - they were longest I've seen this year anywhere! Otherwise a nice enough course and if you wish to see some of the Essex stereotypes in action - this is the place!!

Could be great.........

This course is a not one for the big hitters as you need to plot your way round this pretty parkland course. The greens are nice and flat and there is plenty of water around to navigate. However, I get the feeling it is not getting the TLC it needs. Some of the greens were littered with pitch marks and the 150 markers could do with an updating. It also would have been nice to have a hot shower afterwards rather than the ice cold one. All in all, worth a visit but dont expect too much.

A good test.......

Beautifully maintained tree lined course with hints of Brocket Hall about it. Five par 5's and five par 3's also makes it different from other courses. The fairways and greens were in great condition too. However, whilst the fairways are wide, dont be fooled, it is still a huge test and I would recommend a visit to anyone. Friendly staff and good food as well!

Just played this course again but I have to say I was appalled by the state of the greens!! They were in terrible condition - dry, dusty and dug up in parts. Whilst they took my advice on bringing down the weekday cost to £18....I think it would be better priced at a fiver for what we were presented with today!! WONT be going back in a hurry this time!

A Good Test........

I guess you get an idea of what you're in for on the first tee - elevated about 50ft above the fairway....and it continues like this for the next 6 holes! However, don't be disheartened, it does get easier and anyway some of the views are great! A very good test for any golfer but probably steer clear if you pay off more than 24. Friendly team at the front desk and there's a nice bar/balcony to discuss the round in/on after too. Will go back again once I've learnt to putt!

Needs some work.......

Knew this course was going to need some attention as it was only redesigned last year but I think it has a long way to go before it can claim to be good value. The course itself has potential but having to play off stoney fairways (in places) is nobody's idea of fun and whilst the greens are good, the course suffers from being close too the A12 - far too noisy! A realistic price would be closer to £20 and not the £30 we paid. Wont be rushing back!

Worth a visit......

Really enjoyed this course. Parkland course but hints of links about it too! Up and down in places, it has some great holes to trip you up (Par 3 - 14th is fun!) and some are blind but I still managed a respectable score. The Pro shop and staff couldnt have been more friendly, there is a nice area to sit outsdie and have a beer and I will definitely be going back soon! A little pricey at £35 midweek but the new TSG 2for1 deal (2012) makes it a little easier on the wallet. Try it!

Tucked away but a great little course! A parkland layout, it plays longer than you think and has some challenging holes but dont think you cant score here - you can! It rained heavily on my visit but that didnt stop the fun. I will definately be going back as would like to play it on a dry day!

It has been a long time since I played this course but I was pleasantly surprised by how well the course had grown up - also liked the new ditches they have put in, which adds to the course! Greens are good and true and the area overlooking the 18th green is a pleasant place to enjoy an after-round drink. Good value at £29 (weekends). Well worth a visit!

Long and testing......

Not a bad course, it twists and turns through parkland and whilst is mostly flat, it does have the odd undulation. Testing enough for the mid handicapper (I had a disaster!). Driving range next to the first tee is a bonus and bar staff were friendly enough. Only thing I'd add, is it could have been cheaper midweek than the £22 we paid - given there was hardly anyone on the course!! Will go back though!

Perfect Greens.........

First thing to say is the greens on this course are as good as I've ever played on - ANYWHERE!! I cant congratulate the club enough on how well maintained they are! I dont think I could find a fault on a single green out of 18. The rest of the course is rolling parkland, well looked after and there is enough to test all levels here. Friendly in the pro-shop and a nice area to have a drink after too. Only downside is cost to vistors at £45 but you get 25% off with the Open Fairways card which makes it easier to take.

A message to any other clubs reading - this is what your greens should be like....I will definately be going back again!

Cant say I fell in love with this course but it does have some interesting holes. The par 3 first can wreck your card straight away! Up and down in places but otherwise fairly flat, its good value at £20 for non-members. Nice patio area at the club house to enjoy a drink in afterwards!

Course is a fair challenge but the upkeep of the course (especially the greens) was poor! In fact, given the state of some of the greens I would hesitate to want to play there again. However, judging by some of the relaid turf on the course they are trying to address the issue and perhaps I should give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Cost at £25 is probably fair.

This IS a Championship course! Really enjoyed the test and would love to play there again. Watch out for the very difficult Par 3, third hole - which claims to be the easiest hole on the course, it isnt, especially when the wind blows! Again like the Constable, up and down but enough to make you think as you go round. Plenty of water too!

Considering this course was billed as a Championship course, I was slightly disappionted! However, that is probably mostly down to the quality of the greens, having just been treated, but they didnt mention that on the phone when I booked. Very up and down, it is a good test and has some fantastic holes with some great views of Suffolk! Would play there again in the Summer but 'Stoke by Nayland' - please note - the sign posting between holes is terrible! Weekend Pacakages are good value!

I like this course........

A traditional Parkland course but with many twists and turns! It offers a good challenge with one hole just short of 600 yards long. However, there are enough par 3's and manageable par 4's to keep your score down! Last played in Jan 2009 and the greens were in excellent condition. Would highly recommend this course, the only thing that lets it down is the green fees!

I used to play this course regularly but was put off by the cost! However, it would seem the management has now recognised this and lowered the cost of a round to £15 weekdays and £25 a weekends. I think this is now great value as the course is in pretty good condition and is a good challenge! Will definately play there more in 2009!

Hartswood Golf Course

This is a very pretty course and generally well kept for a council course. A parkland course, it is forgiving to the Mid/High handicapper but can be challenging for all levels.

At £13 midweek and £18.50 at weekends it great value for money too. They also have a well stocked shop which is often very competitively priced!
